"Quality in wines is much easier to recognize than to define."  Maynard A. Amerine b. 1911-1998 Professor Emeritus, Enology, University of California Davis

Here is one of the best family-owned wineries that most of the California cognizant are not familiar with.  These wines are from some of the best vineyard sites and made by the great Ed Sbragia who was winemaker at Beringer Winery for over five decades.  He presided over the helm of one of Napa Valley’s most important wineries and had access to some of the greatest vineyards in northern California.  We have been big fans of these Sbragia Family Vineyards wines from the first sip and when our distributor gave us a BOGO on the remaining inventory we took everything they had…I only wish they had more.

The Sbragia family has been growing grapes and making wines in California for over 100 years.  It is good to see the next generation getting involved as Adam Sbragia is working alongside Ed crafting these amazing single vineyard wines.  These wines are a deal for the regular price but at 50% off they are a NO BRAINER!

2017 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hughes Vineyard Howell Mountain image

2017 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hughes Vineyard Howell Mountain

Price: $180.00                           Your Price: $90.00              Quantity in Stock: 14

Wine Watch Tasting Notes:  A beautiful bouquet laced with red cherry and plum fruit, a nice hand of fresh herbs and sweet tobacco spice.  A big and chewy wine on the tongue but with a firm hand of acidity and a nice hand of spice and herbs to lengthen the finish, this wine is already showing nicely but has the balance and complexity to age a few decades in the cellar.  Finish 50+  Most Excellent

Winery Notes:  The Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon is a newer single vineyard wine in our portfolio that always has five percent of other varietals blended in to bring a greater balance. his wine is made to be more fruit forward and elegant in style. The Hughes has shown to be bright to tart cherries in fruit profile and a bit of anise and fennel to round out the aromatics.  Bay leaves also come to mind as well as French herbs.

2018 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Godspeed Mount Veeder image

2018 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Godspeed Mount Veeder

Price: $153.00                           Your Price: $76.50                           Quantity in Stock: 25

Wine Watch Tasting Notes:  Dark currant and cassis like fruit on the nose with notes of bitter chocolate and a handful of fresh earth very complex bouquet of aromas lifting from the glass.  Thick and chewy on the tongue with a good amount of ripe tannins but plenty of fruit in the middle, this wine needs time still very youthful with notes of dark spices and soy umami like character on the finish.  Finish 55+  Most Excellent

Winery Notes:  This wine defines our passion for mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon. At 1,500 feet elevation, at the end of a long and winding road, Larry Stricker’s picturesque vineyard comprises a series of steep hillsides and mixed sedimentary and volcanic soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines that cling to its slopes produce small clusters of deeply concentrated grapes that lead to statuesque wines with immense aging potential. The Godspeed Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine we have made since 2011, is a single vineyard wine that always has five percent of other varietals blended in to bring a greater balance.

2019 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Andolsen Vineyard Dry Creek Valley image

2019 Sbragia Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Andolsen Vineyard Dry Creek Valley

Price: $75.00               Your Price: $37.50              Quantity in Stock: 36

Wine Watch Tasting Notes:  black raspberry and red cherry fruit on the nose with hints of wild flowers and sweet herbs lifting from the glass.  A lovely silky plush texture to the tannins here with a lovely freshness to the wine on the finish making it more appealing than the 2018 vintage right now but this wine is also very primary with a good amount of rich ripe fruit and some tannins on the long-layered finish.  Finish 50+  Most Excellent +

Winery Notes I buy these grapes from Dr. Andolsen, our long-time friend (over 20 years) and family doctor. His vineyard is on the west side of Dry Creek in the rolling hills of the coastal range in Sonoma County, and he always allows me to select grapes from my favorite blocks. It’s a great piece of land and the wine it makes offers an elegant, yet ripe, rich cherry characteristic that I always associate with this appellation

2021 Sbragia Family Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Redwood Ranch Russian River Valley

Price: $43.50                             Your Price: $19.50                            Quantity in Stock: 7

Winery Notes The Sauvignon Blanc is the first wine we harvest and bottle and thus marks the exciting beginning of another vintage for our family here at the winery. The 2021 Redwood Ranch Sauvignon Blanc is the inaugural vintage from this Russian River Valley vineyard from a small site that runs along the Old Redwood Highway just south of the town of Healdsburg. The combination of warm days and cool nights with old-riverbed clay soils makes the ideal growing conditions to produce this wine.

A bit about Sbragia Family Vineyards:

ADAM & ED SBRAGIA ...

Ed is a big Teddy Bear of a man who cuts an imposing figure - a gentleman whose talent is a match for his size.  The young Sbragia came to work for Beringer in 1976 to apprentice under Nightingale.  He wanted to make wine with the best - it was in his blood.  His grandfather and his father made Zinfandel from grapes grown on the old homestead near Healdsburg.  Although Ed is still a relatively young man, he is now one of the senior winemakers in the Napa Valley.  Ed worked at Beringer for over five decades and was in full charge since Nightingale retired in 1984.

Nightingale & Sbragia first put Beringer on the map with Cabernet.  The break-through came with the 1978 Private Reserve-Lemmon Ranch Cabernet - that vintage allowed Beringer to turn the corner and shoot to the forefront of Napa producers.  Beginning in 1981, Nightingale and Sbragia began to blend from several of their best ranches to make the Private Reserve, and the folks at Wine World will tell you that this has been the secret to Beringer's consistency over the past decade.  The winemaker's blending skills are of prime importance at Beringer, and Sbragia has an unblemished record.  He has crafted an unbroken string of outstanding Cabernets that have been absolutely superb in years such as 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992,1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.  Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet has also been among the very few California Cabernets worthy of a collector's cellar in off vintages such as 1983 (the best in the Valley that year), 1988, 1989, and 1993.

The Sbragia family history here dates back to Ed’s grandfather who came from Tuscany in 1904 and worked in many wineries such as the historic Italian Swiss Colony.  Ed had the pleasure of working with his father in their family Vineyards in Dry Creek Valley while growing up. His Philosophy was that winemaking was a natural process-all you needed for good wine was good land, good grapes and good techniques. He was right, and that has been Ed’s guiding principle since the start of his career.

A big part of the appeal of moving away from working with a big company like Beringer to do his own label is working with family. Ed’s son, Adam, makes the wines with Ed. His youngest son, Kevin, works in the cellar during harvest. Adam’s wife, Kathy, runs the hospitality, and Ed’s wife, Jane, and daughter, Gina, are often found helping out in the tasting room.

With the birth of Adam and Kathy's two daughters Siena and Gemma Julia, the fifth generation of the Sbragia family continues to thrive here in the beautiful Dry Creek Valley.

The family vineyards are now Ed’s legacy to leave to his children.  The Sbragia family loves this land and making wine from it, and bottling it under the family name affirms all the work Ed’s father did for him. “It’s something I had to do to say thank you to him, my dad, Gino.”
