2009 Clos Del Portal Somni

(92-94 Points) The 2009 Somni, tasted from a barrel sample, is a blend of estate grown Carinena, Garnacha, and Syrah aged 14 months in French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up notions of tar, mineral, tapenade, and assorted black fruits. Dense, rich, and loaded in the glass, it will reward 4-6 years of cellaring and provide enjoyment through 2029.

There are no role models of longevity for these massive Priorats as there are in Bordeaux or Rioja so my timeline involves speculation and extrapolation based on experience and the precision balance that this wine is revealing now. Wine Advocate #194 May 2011 Jay Miller

Somni is a wine of great depth and intensity, an opaque shade and silky in texture, which exhibits a remarkable elegance and wealth of nuances. A Priorat of great finesse, freshness and subtlety, with notes of violets, pepper, the flowers of Mediterranean plants (rosemary)…, which becomes better by the year and very soon will find itself among the true greats.
