Collectors Series Wine Tasting Featuring Beaulieu Vineyards Georges De Latour and Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

If your cellar is not completely full you could be cutting your life expectancy dangerously short, so it’s time to stock up!

These are two of Napa Valley’s landmark wineries Beaulieu Vineyards and Beringer are two of the first wineries in Napa Valley.   Beringer winery was founded in 1868 making it Napa Valleys longest continuously operated winery.  Beaulieu Vineyards started in 1900 and made the first Reserve varietally labeled Cabernet Sauvignon with the 1936 vintage Georges de Latour making it the longest continuously produced wine in Napa Valley. 

So these wineries have been making great wine for a long time and everyone who has been collecting wines since the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s should have a bottle or two of the Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon or a Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour in their cellar.

Our collector series tasting event is where we ask you, our wine drinking people, to come up with some wine from your wine collection to add to the party in exchange for your ticket to the event.  That’s correct the collector series tasting means you must bring either a bottle of Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon or a Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour from your cellar to attend the event.   The catch is we only need one bottle of each vintage and we already have one vintage of each wine already spoken for.

Let me explain further- This is a two-part event:

The first part of the evening begins at 6:00pm, this is where we will be tasting through a selection of new releases of Beaulieu and Beringer Vineyards.  This will be a happy hour style event at the bar.  The wines we will be showing are the ones below.

2023 BEAULIEU VINEYARDS SAUVIGNON BLANC NAPA

Our inaugural release of this Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a beautiful expression from vines located within the heart of the valley, offering fragrant notes of Meyer lemon, white peach, orange blossom, and bright pineapple, alongside more subtle oak notes of brioche toast and marzipan. The palate provides a focused mouthfeel up front, bursting with ripe citrus fruits, lasting in length, finishing round and rich with a luscious core of depth, vibrancy, and persistence. Luminus, meaning “light” in Latin, naturally represents the radiance of this exceptional Chardonnay. Tasting Note This inaugural 2018 Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the epitome of the finest expression of our western Rutherford bench-land terroir, exhibiting an intense saturation of color, aromas and flavors. The expressive perfumed bouquet leaps from the glass with exuberant dark berry fruits. Notes of blackberry, black currant, black forest cake and Crème de cassis sit alongside floral violet, rose petal, rosemary and bay laurel, while lifted baking spice notes from the well-integrated oak barrel character, shows nuances of cedar, cinnamon, clove and caramel. On the palate, there is juicy, saturated black cherry, macerated red raspberry, supported by darker hints of espresso, mocha and bittersweet chocolate. The structured “Rutherford dust” tannins are full of grip and plushness, showcasing the signature cocoa powder texture and expansive mouthfeel. Rich, with depth and balance, leading to a generous velvety-smooth textured persistent finish, showing concentration and refinement. A classic example of the very best from the Rutherford appellation.
Vintage The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 Cabernets are of very high quality with plenty of concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity.

It’s a beautiful wine that shows the vintage’s pure, elegant, yet concentrated style perfectly. Gorgeous crème de cassis, violets, blueberries, and cedar pencil notes emerge from the glass, and this beauty builds incrementally on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a lively, pure, layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. TASTING NOTES: A deeply colored and rich wine with substantial backbone and structure will make this 2017 vintage continue to reward after years of careful cellaring. With bright notes of black currant and blackberries and a lush, juicy mouthfeel, this wine is also very approachable in its youth. Complex layers of black fruit and notes of cocoa powder, graphite and light smoky oak mingle well with notes of espresso and vanilla. The ripe tannins support a full structure with balanced acidity leaving a lingering, elegant finish.
VINTAGE: The year began with abundant rainfall, followed by a mild Spring. A Labor Day weekend heatwave kicked harvest into high gear followed by a cool weather break which allowed sugar levels to return to optimum normal level. By October nearly 90 percent of our grapes were harvested when fierce winds fueled the 2017 firestorm. Napa Valley's winemakers remain committed to making some the world's finest wines and early articles about the 2017 vintage describe the wines with words such as "finesse," "great complexity of flavor," and "elegant.“
VINEYARD: Steinhauer Ranch (24%), Bancroft Ranch (21%), Pauli (12%) and Marc Mondavi Ranch (5%) vineyards atop Howell Mountain provide the foundation for the 2017 blend. Fruit from the St. Helena Home Vineyard (15%) and Chabot Vineyard (9%) add the warmth of the St. Helena appellation. Exceptional fruit from Oakville’s Borrow Pit Vineyard (6%) join contributions from Spring Mountain’s Marston Vineyard (5%), Diamond Mountain’s Armstrong Ranch (2%) and Mount Veeder’s Derr Family Vineyard (1%). Grapes for the 2017 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between September 15th and October 24th.

(93 points) "The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 22 months in oak barrels, 76% new, 57% French and 43% American. Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the nose slowly unfurls to reveal baked blackcurrants, stewed plums and dried mulberries with touches of dried leaves, pencil lead, cigar box and beef drippings. Medium-bodied with an alcohol of 13.6% and a pH of 3.9 (suggesting relatively low acidity), the tannins are ripe, firm and velvety textured, framing tons of black fruit preserves flavors and savory nuances, finishing on a lingering menthol note. Marked by scents of cherries, dusty earth, dried herbs and hints of cedar, it's full-bodied, silky and complex, with a lingering finish. It doesn't require much cellaring, but it should drink well for close to two decades. Nicely done. Beaulieu Vineyard is often overlooked in the stable of wineries owned by Treasury, but the company has roughly 1,100 acres devoted to the brand. One of Napa's grand old wineries, it's now helmed by General Manager/Senior Winemaker Trevor Durling. (93 Points) The star of the show from this team in 2020 is the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges De Latour Private Reserve, a deep purple-hued Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 24 months in French oak (95% new). It has terrific aromatics of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, graphite, and spice, and these carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has solid tannins, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. There are some firmer, chalky tannins here, but this is beautifully done and should have two decades of longevity.  Jeb Dunnuck
