2017 Joseph Burrier Domaine Morgon Grand Cras Beaujolais

The Burriers have been a prominent winegrowing family in southern Burgundy since the 15th Century and have owned the Château de Beauregard in Pouilly-Fuissé for six generations. Frédéric-Marc Burrier is the current family member in charge and produces several wines from Pouilly-Fuissé, Mâcon, and Beaujolais. Grand Cras is one of Morgon’s six climats and lies just below Côte de Py. Grand Cras is made up of decomposed rocks and brittle schists known as “roche pourries” which lend a spicy and mineral flavor to the wine. The climat slopes towards the east and has good sun exposure resulting in wines that are deep in color and flavor. The vines are gobelet-trained and have an average vine age of 40 years. Hand-harvested grapes are mostly destemmed and macerated for 9 days during pigéage and remontage. Traditional ‘Burgundian’ fermentation is followed by 15 months aging in used 228-liter Pièce. The wine is lightly filtered before bottling.
