Winemaker Notes: The 2018 growing season was marked by mild and even weather, providing a pleasant contrast to the extremes of 2017. A generally dry winter transitioned into a wet early spring, bringing well-timed rains that fully saturated the soil. Ideal conditions during the flowering period led to a strong fruit set, resulting in a substantial potential crop. The crop's size was noteworthy, not for the number or size of individual berries, but for the sheer density of berries on each cluster. The temperate and leisurely summer extended the growing period, leading to the latest harvest start in my experience. This extended hang time allowed the fruit to ripen slowly, developing lower sugar levels and higher acidity, ultimately producing fresh and expressive wines.
The 2018 Staglin Cabernet is silky, detailed, and embodies a balance of old-world charm and modern precision. It opens with herbaceous cassis and cedary plum notes that gradually unfold into layers of lavender-infused raspberry liqueur and menthol-lifted cherry compote, spiced with green peppercorns, ground coffee, and a touch of Piment d'Espelette. The wine’s elegant weight, delicate concentration, and fine-grained structure create a graceful, balanced palate experience that exudes pure class.
