2008 Vinos Pinol "L'avi Arrufi" Terra Alta

The Piñol family has been growing wine for four generations. L’avi Arrufi means 'Grandfather Arrufi,' the man who founded Celler Piñol in 1945. Today, less than 800 cases are produced of one of the family’s most distinctive wines, made from organically grown vines over seventy years old and tended in dry farmed (no irrigation) vineyards. L'avi Arrufi will easily age for more than a decade. A blend of 50% Carinena, 35% Garnacha and 15% Syrah from clay and chalk soils and from vines aged between 30 and 50-years. It is aged for 14 months in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak. This wine has a very spiced bouquet of pepper, coco and a host of dried flowers and herbs along with a ncie touch of crushed rock like minerality. thick and juicy fruit on the tongue with a silky smooth texture, lots of the mineral and spice nuance from the nose showing on the finish, long and layered with nice freshness and balance.
