Thoughts on the matter: “I like all paintings. I always look at the paintings, good or bad, in barbershops, furniture stores, provincial hotels. I’m like a drinker who needs wine. As long as it is wine, it doesn’t matter which wine.”

Pablo Picasso - Painter

I will not take just any wine and if I have a choice on my last supper one of the wines on the table that evening will be Nebbiolo from Piedmont.  So, I was happy to hear that one of my favorite personalities from one of my favorite wineries in the Piedmont will be in town this month.

Marcaini is one of the legendary estates of Barolo and we are very happy to welcome the owner of this historic property Manuel Marchetti to south Florida for an evening of exceptional wine and a special four-course dinner.

The fee for this tasting which includes dinner and gratuity is $250 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.   Please let us know when you make your reservations if you have any food allergies or aversions and chefs Toni and Dani will be happy to accompany you.

A bit about our Host Manuel Marchetti:

I was born in 1961 in Central America, specifically in Guatemala City. My birth was linked to my father’s work: at the time, he was employed by Cinzano and was overseeing the opening of a vermouth production plant intended to supply the entire Central American market.

When I was five years old, our family moved to Mexico City, where I grew up and completed my studies until the age of nineteen. I then began my university education in the United States, in Austin, Texas, as our family once again relocated for professional reasons connected to the vermouth business. Eventually, circumstances took a different turn and we moved to Italy, settling in Piedmont in the Langhe region.

I completed my university studies in Business Administration in Turin. During that period, I met my wife, Luisa. After our marriage, we moved to Spain, to Barcelona. In 1990, we made the decision together to return to Italy, to La Morra, and to dedicate ourselves to Luisa’s family winery (Marcarini). I have lived and worked here ever since.

I was born and raised in the world of wine. As a child, I spent my days among vats, barrels, pumps, hoses, bottles, and crates. Despite this background, I never imagined that I would devote my life to this sector. Before working in viticulture and winemaking, I gained valuable experience in the textile and fashion industry—a phase that I now see as a meaningful parenthesis in my professional journey.

What excites me the most about my work is the constant search for balance. Every effort is driven by the desire to achieve harmony between nature and human intervention. This philosophy guides every aspect of our estate, from vineyard cultivation to winemaking, from our relationships with co-workers, distributors, importers, and agents, to our connection with the final consumer.

From the classic and structured 2021 vintage, this is a benchmark for soulful, age-worthy Nebbiolo. The nose is wonderfully lifted and perfumed, with classic notes of sour cherry, dried rose petal, and tar, woven with hints of licorice, savory herbs, and crushed stone. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and elegant yet powerfully structured, with a core of pristine red fruit framed by firm, noble tannins and vibrant, energetic acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant. A profound and contemplative Barolo that demands decades of patience.

An extraordinary dessert wine – sweet yet fresh and intensely aromatic – whose delicate sparkle and lively grape flavors are the pride of Moscato d’Asti. It is intensely aromatic, with fruity and floral notes. The quintessential dessert wine, easy to pair with freshly baked desserts. For Marcarini, this wine represents happiness and friendship.

Marcarini is the name of a sixth generation family business of Barolo winemakers in the village of La Morra.Today as in the past we carry on the traditions of those who preceeded us,with the same philosophy and passion.

In the mid-19th century Sebastiano Marcarini, general of the Sabaudian army, began the vinification of Nebbiolo grapes as Barolo for domestic use and for offering gifts in the royal reception at the Sabaudian Court. The high-ranking official was the preceptor of the Italian king’s sons,Vittorio Emanuele the 2nd,who, in turn, had for Prime minister Camillo Benso Count of Cavour, one of the greatest estimator of Barolo.

In the beginning of the 20th century,Giulio Marcarini, the official’son, was capable of carrying on the enological and cultural legacy of his father: the 30th of June 1934,he founded, together with other historic wine makers from the Langhe hillside, the “Consorzio dei vini tipici di Barolo e Barbaresco”. This was an historic turning point towards a new horizon in terms of quality and preservation, representing a reference for his descendants.

The first one in the family who saw the great selling and commercial potential of his Barolo was the notary Giuseppe Marcarini who, together with his daughter Anna, started selling bottles with his own brand. His business became very quickly successful, to the point that he started working together with his enologist Elvio Cogno and in the 60’s they launch the Barolo production with the Cogno-Marcarini brand. The winery was one of the first using both the vineyard name and the Brunate cru on their labels since 1958.

Giuseppe Marcarini died at 59 and, from the beginning of the 80’s,his daughter Anna gave a new boost to the business by increasing the 4,5 hectares in the cru of Brunate and La Serra and by expanding the wines selection with Dolcetto and Barbera. She also invented the name “Lasarin” for the Nebbiolo grapes collected from the younger vineyards in La Serra.

In 1990 Luisa, born after the wedding of Anna Marcarini and the lawyer Giovanni Bava, inherited the family estates and began building the Poderi Marcarini business for carving into history the name of a family representing a symbol of enological excellence. At the young age of 26, she took the challenge together with her husband Manuel Marchetti, who exploited his experience as an international manager during the 20 years period in which the Barolo became a world renowned wine.

The winery had also increased its properties by purchasing half hectare in località Berri, 6 hectares in Neviglie with 2 hectares for hazelnuts and other two hectares in the Roero hillside, with a total of almost 20 hectares of vineyards.

Nowadays, the Poderi Marcarini is a well-established company and Manuel and Luisa’s children have already entered the family business: Andrea, Chiara and Elisa carry on the historic tradition of their family.
