I am trying to drink as much wine as I can before I leave this earth!  We never know when that is and that’s why I say “Drink the Good Stuff First”!

 

Pahlmeyer was an immediate success when they released their first wine from the 1986 vintage with Helen Turley as their winemaker.  Over the ensuing years they continued to add to their line-up of varietals in their offerings, and it seemed that every varietal they released rose to the top of the category in terms of the rating and their demand. 

 

Shortly after their Chardonnay was released it made its way into the movie “Disclosure” starring Demi Moore and Michael Douglas.  Pahlmeyer Chardonnay was a major part of the plot as when Demi Moore’s character found out it was Michael Douglas’s favorite wine, she said she bought it at a local liquor store but at that time you could only get the wine on the mailing list or through the secondary markets.  They found out she was lying because of how rare and hard to find the wine was in 1994.

A  bit about Pahlmeyer Winery:

 

 

Captivated by wine and dreaming of creating a “California Mouton,” founder Jayson Pahlmeyer was determined to see his vision through. Leaving behind his career in law, he traveled to Northern California (his native soil) where he partnered with the owner of a 55-acre site in south-east Napa Valley. Jayson and his business partner took several trips to elite vineyards in France studying the finest red Bordeaux varieties. Together they worked with the University of Bordeaux to evaluate soil samples from their land in California and in 1981 planted several French cuttings in Napa. In 1986, Pahlmeyer’s Proprietary Red was born, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The 30th vintage of Pahlmeyer’s Proprietary Red was released earlier this year.

We are thrilled to continue working with both Jayson and his daughter Cleo as we incorporate the esteemed Pahlmeyer brands into our luxury portfolio.” He added, “Pahlmeyer compliments our portfolio nicely, allowing Gallo to continue competing in luxury wine and fueling strategic growth for the company.”

 

“We are happy to have found a buyer who shares my family’s vision for Pahlmeyer,” said Cleo Pahlmeyer, President of Pahlmeyer Winery. “We are equally dedicated to making world class wines and I am thrilled to begin working with the Gallo team.”

 

The purchase includes both the Pahlmeyer and Jayson by Pahlmeyer wine brands, which range in price from $30 to $350. As part of the agreement, Gallo will lease Waters Ranch, a vineyard in Atlas Peak, and will continue to operate the Jayson tasting room that opened in The Village at Vista Collina Resort in August of 2018. The Wayfarer brand and Wayfarer Vineyard are not part of the sale and will continue to be run by Cleo Pahlmeyer.

Near the end of the year, I got my hands on the 2022 release of this iconic label's Chardonnay, and it's the kind of structured, powerful, intensely flavourful Chardonnay that you'd want to stockpile in the cellar. It conveys a duality of power and restraint. Knockout aromas of white peach, pineapple, and salted lemon peel, coconut, and wet stone. Full and rich with an extraordinary depth of sweet, creamy fruit that inundates the palate, suspended by an equally penetrating core of saline minerality infused with a luxurious finish of almond pastry notes, dried apricots, and white flowers. Dominant scents of cassis mark the nose, joined by hints of dark chocolate, black cherries and pencil shavings. This full-bodied wine is firm and muscular but with enough baby fat that you could try one now if you had a big steak on hand.
