2006 Vintage Italian Wine Tasting - A Study of 20 Year Old Wines

We try to do things that are relaxing more than once a day here at the Wine Watch… but that's just us...

Italy has some of the world’s greatest wines and some of the most age worthy can be found in Tuscany and the Piedmont.   

This is true scientific research that we are doing here at the Wine Watch, checking each bottle to see when the best time to consume for the most drinking pleasure.  It's hard work but we are willing to sacrifice our body for our wine drinking people.  These wines are all from the outstanding 2006 vintage from Tuscan and the Piedmont in Italy and they are now at 20 years of age which is what many would consider to be fully mature. 

The 2006 vintage was outstanding in many places on Earth for wine, but I remember being most excited about the wines of Tuscany, Piedmont and Northern California.

Here is what Antonio Galloni had to say about 2006 in the Wine Advocate.  “The 2006s are big, full-bodied wines loaded with super-ripe fruit, but with plenty of stuffing underneath. In many cases the wines were made in the last month or so of the growing season, particularly in Chianti Classico, where warm daytime temperatures alternated with cool evenings. These conditions extended the grapes’ hang time and allowed the fruit to reach full phenolic ripeness while achieving maximum development of aromatics, acidity and structure. Growers had the luxury and peace of mind to harvest without being rushed. In a few spots producers reported harvesting into October, particularly for the Sangioveses. The 2006s will be tempting to drink young for their opulent fruit, but the best wines have the potential to age gracefully for many years. Since their initial release, many of the higher-end 2006s have begun to close down, so readers will want to approach these wines with caution. If the vintage has a weak spot it is the dry tannins that show up in a few wines where the warm conditions did not allow growers to achieve the level of sweetness and ripeness in the tannins that was evident in 2004.”
