Every year we focus on the world’s greatest wines and our annual Washington State’s Finest wine tasting always bring back fond memories of my trips to the Auction of Washington State wines which I attended three years in a row at one time but have not been back since 2013.
Whenever we have one of our good friends from Washington State in town we host them at the Wine Bar but we also continue to host at least one high level Washington state wine tasting every year focusing on vintage wines from the most sought after producers.
This year we just happened across some gems from the 1980’s and 1990’s which will be the cornerstone of this event. The wines on the table tonight are some of the oldest that we have ever served from Washington State with Leonetti Cellars going back to 1985! This is serious scientific work we are conducting at Wine Watch and these may be some of the last bottles of these legendary wines that exist!
We also have an incredible collection of vintage wines from Washington State so I have included everything that we have in the store on this offering on SALE!!

A bit of history about Washington State Wines:
The first people who planted grapes in Washington were the German and Italian immigrants and that was around 1825.
Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington state’s Founding Winery, with some of the oldest and most acclaimed vineyards in the Columbia Valley.
Built on the 1912 estate owned by Seattle lumber baron Frederick Stimson, the winery’s roots date back to the Repeal of Prohibition, when the Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company were formed. They merged in 1954 to form American Wine Growers. In 1967, American Wine Growers began a new line of premium vinifera wines called “Ste. Michelle Vintners” under the direction of legendary California winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff.
Ste. Michelle Vintners planted its first vines at Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. Cold Creek remains one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards in the state. Ste. Michelle Vintners now own more than 3,500 prime vineyard acres in the Columbia Valley.
Some of the other founding fathers of the Washington state wine industry are- Leonetti Cellars, Woodward Canyon and Quilceda Creek. These three producers are the first “cult wines” from Washington state and basically the second round of producers to move in.
Leonetti Cellar, which was bonded in 1977 by Founders Gary and Nancy Figgins, started as Gary’s vision to make world-class wines in Walla Walla has turned out to be a true American success story. Today, Leonetti Cellar produces some of the most sought after wines not onlyfrom Washington state but in the world.
Woodward Canyon Winery was one of the first two wineries to help put the Walla Walla Valley on Washington State's wine map. From its first powerful 1981 cabernet sauvignon to the new releases today they have been among this state's top producers and we have actually have some of these wines in our tasting tonight!
Founded in 1979, Quilceda Creek has had an unbroken string of highly-rated vintages that has led Robert Parker Jr. to name it Washington State’s premier Cabernet Sauvignon producer with five vintages receiving (100 points) from Robert Parker Jr.'s The Wine Advocate, this is the mosxt sought after collectible. Although we are not showing any Quilceda Creek this evening we do have several vintages available for sale after the notice of this tasting we have a list of all the Washington state wines in the store.
The industry and been expanding rapidly, Washington is the second largest wine producing state with just over 500 wineries in 2007. Just a few short years later, today there are over 700 with the giant Chateau St. Michelle leading the way in terms of size.

(92-94 Points) Checking in on a barrel sample of the 2018 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine wafts with a red and black-fruited profile, tones of graphite, pencil shavings, oak essence and a subtle soft herbaceous note to keep things interesting. Full-bodied on the palate, flavors of sweet tobacco and bitter dark chocolate linger with grainy tannins that should settle by the time the wine is released. It clearly has potential and displays an inky weight across the mid-palate. This will be another stunning release from Passing Time. Issue Date, 22nd Oct 2020. (92 Points) The 2017 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon has splashes of 7% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc added in to round out the blend. The nose is lush with a clean expression that will age beautifully for the next decade. The wine has a blackberry and red cherry core, with dusty plum and soft savory notes that add to the complexity. The mouthfeel is still youthful and currently showing well, with a tight mineral expression and approachable tannins, ending with a long, spicy finish. (93 Points) A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon has a clean and focused core of black fruit surrounded by dusty floral tones and sweet tobacco. Coming from the Champoux and Discovery vineyards, the wine is medium to full-bodied on the palate and has excellent mineral tension that gives way to building tannins. (94 Points) The first vintage and a collaboration between football stars Damon Huard and Dan Marino, Passing Time’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (14.5% alcohol) is made by Chris Peterson, of Avennia. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc that comes mostly from the Discovery Vineyard, it was vinified in stainless steel and aged 21 months in 80% new French oak. Classic Cabernet on the nose, with ample blackcurrants, cassis, damp earth, licorice and mint, this beauty is full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has integrated acidity building underlying structure. It will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and have two decades or more of ultimate longevity. Hats off to this team for a killer first release! Issue Date, 28th Jun 2015. A Merlot-dominated blend, the 2011 Flying Pig checks in as 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 12 months in 50% new French oak before being moved to large oak puncheons. Deep-ruby in color, it has beautiful cassis, plum, licorice, olive tapenade and lead pencil shaving-like aromas and flavors that give way to a full-bodied, layered and concentrated 2011 that has beautifully integrated oak, plenty of mid-palate and a terrific finish. One of the few 2011s that has some upside, it offers up a smoke-laced array of black currants, singed herbs, graphite and hints of spring flowers to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless character on the palate. Sporting a big, masculine profile, with notions of lite gunpowder, ground pepper, herbs and wild strawberry and blackberry fruit, it flows onto the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a full, rich mid-palate and a healthy dose of tannin that will require short-term cellaring to integrate.
