"Red wine with fish. Well, that should have told me something."

Bond in From Russia with Love (1963)

We could sell out a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tasting once a week even in the summertime, even though it is hot as Hades out there people still drink Cabernet Sauvignon all year long.  Today we have an excellent offer on a great small Napa Valley family owned winery at the best price in the Country!

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is a relatively new invention in the world of grape varietals, it is the result of the combination of a white varietal Sauvignon Blanc and a red grape Cabernet Franc crossed by some mad grape scientist in southwest France in the 17th century.  Because of its thick skin and relative ease of cultivation this varietal has spread around the world and makes high quality full bodied red wines in many parts of the wine world.

Napa Valley has experienced several outstanding vintages in a row with 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.  Of all the recent releases the 2014 vintage is drinking the best right now it is a bit lighter than 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.  Anything that is estate grown and is $50 a bottle is a relative value from a great small family owned Napa Valley winery.  Check out these Hoopes Family Vineyards wines from Napa Valley they are one of the best small producers with a focus on top quality wines at a reasonable price.

Price: $54.00    Your Price: $35.00               Quantity in Stock: 24

“The notoriously minuscule yields in 2015 brought one of the earliest harvests on record in the Napa Valley. This vintage is marked by exuberant fruit and ripe lush tannins. In fact, we aged our 2015 a bit longer in barrel to bring the exuberant fruit into balance and with the lush tannins and broaden the midpalate and overall mouthfeel. In the glass, warm enveloping aromas of beeswax, powdery milk chocolate and ripe red cherries are layered with dark plum and baking spices. Fruit forward with a smooth attack, flavors of strawberry jam yield to a mouthwatering and seamless mouth with a huge amount of length full of red fruit, powdery oak, creamy milk chocolate and pleasing tension.”

This vintage just arrived and the 2015 vintage is an outstanding one for Napa Valley but the wines will need a bit of time in the cellar.  The 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines have excellent structure and lots of tannins so they will need time.  They will reward those with patience!

Yet another drought year, the smooth moderate temperatures of 2014 allowed for gentle development and concentration of flavor. This long hang time gave us beautiful ripeness with layers of fruit and sweet mature tannins. Rich warm aromas of cigar box, creamy vanilla and damp earth, give way to a lush and generous mouth full of ripe plum and sweet cherries. Well-balanced oak supports a finish of milk chocolate and integrated tannins completing the graceful arc in the mouth.

Wine Watch Review:  A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Petite Sirah, this 2014 vintage is a more balanced and approachable vintage from Napa.  On the nose this wine has a good amount of red and black currant berry fruit, a pretty mint and floral component with loamy earthy notes.   The first vintage was 2012 this wine has 40% new oak and spends 18 months in the barrel, a bit more structure on the tongue with some dry tannins at the end with good balance, a complex wine that should age for at least a decade in the cellar.   Finish 45+            Excellent +

Price: $67.50    Your Price: $57.37               Quantity in Stock: 12

Showing deep garnet in the glass and with heady aromas of strawberry, raspberry and ripe plum. The nose is balanced nicely with ripe characters of blackberry jelly, honey, caramel and creamy milk chocolate. Lively and focused in the mouth, with juicy ripe red fruit and lush, well integrated tannins. Sweet cigar box and sappy bayberry offer a warm rich counterpoint and bring balance to the palate of expressive fruit. This is a layered and refined expression of our Liparita Cabernet, still powerful, but with an active mid-palate and spacious freshness on the finish. -hoopesvineyards.simplycms.com

Price: $139.00    Your Price: $99.00             Quantity in Stock: 4

“2013 was another stunning year in Napa Valley. Crop loads were well balanced and we were graced with a warm, steady growing season. This easy does it vintage allowed us to take our time and schedule just right picks. Lovely deep purple hue in the glass. Pretty, lifted aromas of strawberry and currants are balanced nicely with ripe characters of cassis jelly candies, honeyed figs and coffee confection. Expansive in the mouth, with richly layered tannins and luscious sweet oak, the finish at once recalls the fresh liveliness of the nose while integrating the rich concentrated body of the wine with excellent persistence. This is Classic Liparita Cabernet, powerful and pretty.”

Serendipity was in the morning air when Maya and Sophie took Lindsay for a walk down a Yountville country lane. Maya, the feisty one, spied a jack rabbit and bounded off in hot pursuit. When Lindsay caught up with her, she found herself surrounded by some fine looking Chardonnay vines. Always on the look-out for the best fruit for Hoopla, with some neighborhood super-sleuthing, Lindsay tracked down the vineyard owner and kept talking until she got his handshake. That chance discovery gave us really great Chardonnay that we offer at a really great price. In fact, chasing rabbits is exactly what we’re talking about. This cheeky Chardonnay will make you want to get into some mischief too.

Wine Watch Review:  A good amount of ripe tropical fruit, some lemon drop citrus candy fruit and there is 10% barrel fermented here sur lees for 9 months to round out the palate.  A nice fresh Chardonnay with a solid core of fruit and tongue tingly minerality.  Finish 35+         Very Good +

They still sell come grapes but they have created this second label in 2009, this vintage is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and this is a combination of Oakville and Rutherford fruit, a good amount of red currant and dark plum fruit with sweet tobacco spice, hints of loamy earth and dark tobacco. Soft round tannins on the tongue with notes of dark chocolate, a very drinkable style with red currant and plum fruit and a nice freshness at the end but the tannins are light and approachable right now. Finish 35+ Very Good

A bit about Hoopes Vineyard

http://hoopesvineyard.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/the-family_photo1-nb.png

Spencer Hoopes loves wine and he also loves farming. What began as a passion for collecting wine and the land soon went beyond that. In 1983 Spencer planted his ten-acre vineyard in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. With the remarkable terroir, a little bit of luck and a lot of love, we quickly found a home for the grapes in some of the better wineries in Napa Valley.

Fifteen years later, he decided to take some of those grapes off the market and put them into bottles with our name on the label. Spencer Hoopes had always loved aromatic wines with balance and structure, and he wanted to make that kind of wine with the grapes from his own vineyard. And so he launched Hoopes Cabernet.

Hoopes wines are classic cabs that capture the pure relationship between grape-grower and winemaker with an old-world-meets-new-world style profile. The philosophy is simple: minimize after-harvest manipulation of the grape so that you can enjoy the most important ingredient in its true form. This is true grower-made wine.

When Spencer Hoopes encouraged his daughter Lindsay to take over full management of the winery, she accepted, with a few conditions. The two now work together, sharing that vision of great cabernet sauvignon from the Napa Valley. And the working relationship is warm. “It is a privilege and an honor to help continue and a family business that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” says Lindsay Hoopes.

Anne Vawter loves horses and wine. Growing up on a farm in Walla Walla, Washington, Anne

developed a deep appreciation for agriculture from her father, and inherited his love of wine. He introduced her to wine through tastings of Leonetti, L’Ecole No. 41, and other wines from that region. After graduating from University of California, Davis with a B.S. degree in Viticulture and Enology in 2002, she worked in wineries in Washington, California, and for an extended harvest season in Chile as the crew boss for Caliterra. Her arrival in Napa brought her to Paradigm Winery in Oakville, where she became Heidi Barrett’s assistant for four years. Anne credits much of her own winemaking style to that period, but continues to challenge and test her palate. She frequently travels to both old and new winemaking regions in her quest for more knowledge.

Anne began as Hoopes Vineyard’s winemaker with the 2012 vintage. “I love working with the fruit from Oakville. It’s my viticultural solar plexus. I have made wine up and down the Napa Valley, but no other appellation is as exciting to me as Oakville. My overall philosophy is ‘work with great fruit!’,” said Anne. She looks forward to continuing to work for Spencer Hoopes and his daughter, Lindsay Hoopes, the proprietors of Hoopes Family Vineyards, because of their commitment to the historical significance of their vineyards. Lindsay and Anne both grew up on farms, and they share the same vision of vineyard-focused winemaking.

In addition to wine, Anne also nurtures her love for horses by managing Blossom Creek Farm, a horse farm in Calistoga. She lives on the property with her husband, Cameron Vawter, and their two children, a dog and a cat. Along with horses, they also raise chickens and keep a beehive. Anne is the winemaker for both the Hoopes and Liparita wine brands.

Hoopes Family Vineyards is a family owned vineyard and winery dedicated to producing premium, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon. We love wine, and we love farming. Our goal is to capture the truest expression of the Oakville terroir in which our grapes are grown.

Our wines are classic cabs that capture the relationship between grape-grower and winemaker and constitute an expression of old-world-farming and taste profiles marrying with new-world fruit flavors and ripeness Our philosophy is simple: we minimize after-harvest manipulation of the grape so that you can enjoy the most important ingredients – the grape, and the terroir — in their truest form. The result is our wine: elegant and feminine, yet bold. The result is notably distinguishable from the region’s many other great wines due to the unique site, clone, and age of the vines.  Spencer Hoopes, first generation proprietor, planted the ten-acre vineyard 1983 and has been farming the land ever since. Year after year the vineyard produces the highest quality grapes, with bright fruit flavors and a dense flavor core. Now, Spencer works alongside his daughter, Lindsay Hoopes, to continue the legacy of Hoopes Family Wines. Although the wines bear a new face, Lindsay maintains reverence for the land, farming, and family heritage in the wines that she produces.

Dante was Spencer Hoopes’ beloved terrier. His image graces the Hoopes wine label and serves as the energetic inspiration for Hoopes Family Wines. Since the first vintage he has been jumping through the hoop of an old barrel as the focal point of Hoopes wines. Recently the label was updated, and an embossed gold-leaf image of Dante now appears front and center, jumping through the hoop of a barrel. The new label reflects the bold, yet elegant style of wine that Hoopes has become known for producing.

Dante is still leaping today somewhere, in an even happier place. Hoopes now has two new rescue dogs, Sophie and Maya, who are as energetic as Dante was, but times two! In a lot of ways, Hoopes winery is just getting started!

A bit about the 2015 Vintage in Napa from the Wine Spectator:

“Across the Northern Hemisphere, winemakers in many regions are reporting one of the earlier grape harvests they've seen. They scrambled to pick fruit and find tank space, but now they are enjoying tasting the results and getting an idea of what nature provided. Wine Spectator will be providing snapshot looks at harvest in major wine regions, providing an early preview of what wine drinkers can expect.

Up next, California's Napa Valley, where drought conditions and poor weather during fruit set led to a lot of uneven grape bunches and very low yields. For the most part, vintners report their wines should be very good to outstanding. But quality is variable.

The Good News: Napa vintners report a harvest without any problems, capping off a growing season that produced clean, healthy grapes. They also believe they have made some high-quality wines, though not at the level of their 2013s or even 2014s.

The Bad News: A year marked by drought produced a very small crop; there was also some uneven ripening as sugars outpaced flavor development.

Promising Grapes: Some potentially great Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel, but quality and yields varied considerably from vineyard to vineyard.

Picking Started: Harvest began in very early August, and wineries were even bringing in Cabernet Sauvignon before the month ended. Picking ended in October.

Analysis: After three years of plentiful harvests, California's water shortage finally caught up with Napa Valley's vines. "The vines are really showing the effects of our fourth year of drought," said Corra winemaker Celia Welch. "They look tired. After three banner years in terms of both high yield and high quality, since April we knew we were looking at a much smaller crop."

Everyone knew yields would be down in 2015. Drought years do that. But the lack of water wasn't the only factor that put a crimp in Napa Valley's harvest this year. Cold weather during flowering led to poor fruit set, leading to small, uneven grape clusters. Vintners are telling Wine Spectator that yields in some locations are 50 to 90 percent less than average. But they also report that the fruit that did ripen was outstanding.

Ripening was helped by a warm summer with almost no rain. Picking began in early August in some areas. Most of the valley was finished by late October. "After more than 30 vintages in Napa Valley I still haven't seen two that are alike and 2015 didn't disappoint in that way," observed Elias Fernandez of Shafer Vineyards. "We started picking a couple of days earlier than last year, but four separate heat spikes fueled a very compact three-week harvest. Ripeness was hitting its peak in a lot of vineyard blocks very close together.

"The good part about having less fruit than in the last couple of vintages is that we weren't in a mad scramble for tank space. Because of the drought, berries were smaller and just packed with color and flavor. What I'm seeing so far in Stags Leap Cabernet is good quality, dark color and the potential for some great structured, extracted wines."

The heat did pose a few more challenges. The early-season warm temperatures pushed sugar levels in some grapes well ahead of the maturation of the skins and tannins, where the flavor lies. And Craig Williams, a consultant who works with wineries throughout Napa and Sonoma, said that the heat during September caused more raisining and higher sugars, requiring more sorting than usual to prevent stuck fermentations. "What I've tasted from tank is very good; and along the lines of 2014 rather than the powerful 2013," he said.

Early, small, but very good seems to be what vintners are hoping their tired vines produced.”  www.winespectator.com
