Savigny Les Beaune - The Best Value in Burgundy and all the Alex Gambal wines in the store on SALE!!

"Away with you, water, destruction of wine!"

Catullus | (84 BC – ca. 54 BC) Latin Poet

Wine is on average 85% water but it’s safer to add alcohol to the mix when you are drinking any beverage that could have fecal matter in it.

What is the best value in Burgundy today?  My vote would go to Savigny Les Beaune.                We recently showed a 1966 Maurice Martin Savigny Les Beaune at a vintage Burgundy tasting and the crowd could not believe that a village Savigny could last 50+ years.   These wines are incredible for their cellar worthy qualities and amazing that you can find village wines for around $30 a bottle and premier cru wines at around $50 a bottle for new releases.

Savigny’s vineyards form a V-shape and are located at the meeting place of a valley and the plain, offering some of the most picturesque scenery in the Côte d’Or. These vineyards are of ancient lineage. For much of their history, they belonged to the domaine of the Dukes of Bourgogne, to neighboring religious houses, or to the Knights of Malta. An imposing 14th century castle testifies to the appellation's aristocratic qualifications.

We were able to secure a good amount of our good friend Alex Gambal’s 2019 1er Cru Aux Clous.  Aux Clous is a fairly large plot which is located not far from the river named Rhoin.  In the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, 'Aux Clous' meant Clos, which could designate gardens sometimes enclosed by walls. Gardens that have turned into plots of vines.

Check out all the Savigny Les Beaune in the store, I have also included all the wines from Alex Gambal on this Burgundy SALE!

Wine Watch Review:  An incredible value and a wine with excellent structure and complexity these 2019 vintage wines from Burgundy are going to age gracefully in the cellar and will last for 30+ years in the cellar if you like vintage wines and have patience 2019 is a great investment.  Premier Cru Savigny at under $50 a bottle is one of the best values in all of Burgundy and this wine has a beautiful bouquet of dark cherry berry fruit, pretty floral notes and exotic woodsy spices.  A good amount of rich ripe fruit on the palate with silky smooth tannins which have a bitter edge to the finish at first but smooths out after a few hours in the glass.  A firm hand of acidity holds everything in place and the minerality lengthens the finish, this wine is very primary at the moment, it needs a bit of time in the bottle to come together.  Keep it open for 24 hours to enjoy it today or hold on to it for 8-10 years in the cellar to appreciate it at its peak.  This vintage was marked by extremely low yields they made 1/2 of what they normally do only 125 cases of the 2019 vintage was made, it was aged in 20% new oak.   Finish 45+ Excellent +

(92-94 Points)  A perfumed ripe and cool nose features notes of red currant black raspberry violet and a hint of sandalwood. There is very fine mid-palate density with an abundance of sappy dry extract to the velvety and mouth coating flavors that flash good minerality on the powerful balanced and hugely long finish. This is marvelous but it's also a buy and forget you own it wine. (Drink starting 2036)  Wine Advocate

(91-93 points) Here too there is a mentholated top note present on the more sauvage and forest floor nuanced aromas of red and dark currant. I very much like the sense of underlying tension suffusing the even more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully long finale. This serious, austere and compact effort is quite tightly wound and a wine that is unlikely to make for especially interesting drinking young; then again, textbook Guettes rarely does. Cru located at the bottom of the hillside, on moderately deep soil, made up of small pebbles in red earth. Exposure: East, South-East.

With a deep ruby color, this very expressive velvety wine charms with its finesse and intense fruitiness. In the great tradition of Pinot, this vintage is very representative of a Savigny.

Domaine Rapet is located in Pernand-Vergelesses, in Burgundy. The estate has been known since 1765 and includes 20 hectares of vines in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-Lès-Beaune, Chorey-Lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Beaune. Within the vineyard, they set up a sustainable viticulture against diseases and insects of the vine according to climatic conditions. An inventory of the operation listing all the elements promoting the diversity of fauna and flora has been carried out.

This Savigny-Lès-Beaune cuvée comes from a Premier Cru plot located in the "Aux Fourneaux" climat and whose vines are around 50 years old. The harvest is carefully sorted in the vineyard and then on arrival at the winery. The fermentation of the Pinot Noir grapes lasts 15 days with punching down before pressing. Aging is carried out in barrels, 30% of which are new.

2017 DOMAINE PAVELOT SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE PLAISIR

Price: $32.25                     Your Price: $28.38                Quantity in Stock: 28

A beautiful deep red, this wine has a straightforward nose, enhanced with some notes of black fruits. Solid but silky tannins and pleasant fruitiness accompany the distinguished palate. It is a Pinot Noir where the terroir is fully expressed.

Producer: For several generations, the DOMAINE Jean-Marc and Hugues Pavelot located in Savigny-les-Beaune (Côte de Beaune, Burgundy) has been passed down from father to son, thus guaranteeing the know-how that has made its reputation.

Today, the property extends over 13 hectares, mainly in the communes of Savigny-les-Beaune but also in Beaune and Aloxe-Corton.

Our production will allow you to discover a dozen wines of very varied typicity. These differences are closely linked to the notion of terroir, a particularity of Burgundian viticulture. Each appellation or climate is, therefore, the expression of a fairly complex association between the place's geology, its topography, and even its history.

This diversity is very present in the Savigny-les-Beaune vineyard, which covers two hills and the valley that connects them. Its altitude is between 220 and 360 meters. The nature of the soil is very varied, and its exposure is south, south-east and north-east oriented.

Savigny Les Beaune

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Savigny-lès-Beaune wine is produced in the commune of Savigny-lès-Beaune in Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Savigny-lès-Beaune may be used for red and white wine with respectively Pinot noir and Chardonnay as the main grape variety. The name of the appellation is sometimes written simply as Savigny, without the -lès-Beaune suffix. The production consists of slightly over 85 per cent red wine, and slightly less than 15 per cent white wine. There are no Grand Cru vineyards within Savigny-lès-Beaune.

In 2008, there was 347.82 hectares (859.5 acres) of vineyard surface in production for Savigny-lès-Beaune wine at village and Premier Cru level, and 13,359 hectoliter of wine was produced, of which 11,443 hectoliter red wine and 1,916 hectoliter white wine. Some 249.96 hectares (617.7 acres) of this area was used for the red wines in 2007.  The total amount produced corresponds to almost 1.8 million bottles, of which slightly over 1.5 million bottles of red wine and a little over 250,000 bottles of white wine.

For white wines, the AOC regulations allow both Chardonnay and Pinot blanc to be used, but most wines are 100% Chardonnay. The AOC regulations also allow up to 15 per cent total of Chardonnay, Pinot blanc and Pinot gris as accessory grapes in the red wines, but this is not very often practiced. The allowed base yield is 40 hectoliter per hectare of red wine and 45 hectoliter per hectare for white wine. The grapes must reach a maturity of at least 10.5 per cent potential alcohol for village-level red wine, 11.0 per cent for village-level white wine and Premier Cru red wine, and 11.5 per cent for Premier Cru white wine.

Premiers Crus

There are 22 climats in Savigny-lès-Beaune classified as Premier Cru vineyards. The wines of these vineyards are designated Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru + vineyard name, or may labelled just Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru, in which case it is possible to blend wine from several Premier Cru vineyards within the AOC.

In 2007, 143.26 hectares (354.0 acres) of the total Savigny-lès-Beaune vineyard surface consisted of Premier Cru vineyards, of which 132.23 hectares (326.7 acres) red and 11.03 hectares (27.3 acres) white Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru. The annual production of Premier Cru wine, as a five-year average, is 5,231 hectoliter of red wine and 440 hectoliter of white wine.

All the Alex Gambal Burgundy in the store on SALE!!

The best discovery that we have made in the world of Burgundy since I have owned the store are the wines of Alex Gambal.  We hosted a tasting with these wines every year in February/March and Alex has been here several times to host the tasting in person.

An American in Burgundy is a unique story, but Alex is a unique guy.  We were sad to see it come to an end when he sold to the farm to the Boisset family a few years ago but we are glad that we were able to secure a good amount of his last few vintages to offer our “Wine Drinking People” that have got to know Alex and his wines over the years.

We have sent dozens of people to see his winery in Beaune and he never let us down, not only were our people a big fan of his wines but there is something that makes you feel at home when you meet an American in Burgundy.

We thought that when Alex sold the farm to the Boisset family that the 2018 vintage would be the last with his name on it.  But when our good friends at Boisset found out that Alex built a successful brand and that there was a strong demand for his wines in the US market they decided to continue making wines under this label as Jean Charles Boisset loves a good story.

 Gambal and Work

Gambal Work – elegant and beautifully balanced wines

GAMBAL-WORK is the creation of four men who believe that great wine is made by following a seamless line from the vineyard to the bottle. This is easy in theory but requires discipline and vigor to see and hear a myriad of small details throughout the entire process.  It is a journey that begins with the soil and vines, consummating nearly two years later with bottling.

Alex Gambal and Peter Work arrived at this, their second professions, via circuitous routes. Alex, an American, discovered Burgundy in 1993 and since has developed an estate of thirty acres from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin. Peter, a Dane, found Santa Barbara in 2001 and since has carefully cultivated an estate of nineteen acres in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Both Alex and Peter are passionate about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two historic varieties of Burgundy and the Santa Rita Hills. They also share a dedication to bio-dynamical cultivation.

This is the special bottling that our three amigos purchased in 2019 at the Auction and this wine will be shown at the tasting.  A great vintage and selected by three of South Florida’s top wine collectors.  They selected Alex as the vintner to bring this wine up through elevage in his cellar in Beaune so it also has Alex’s name on the bottle.

The Hospices de Beaune aka Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse in Beaune.  Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor and indigent.  The original hospital building, the Hôtel-Dieu is one of the finest examples of fifteenth-century Burgundian architecture, is now a museum. Medical services for patients ended in 1971 these are now provided in modern hospital buildings.

The Hôtel-Dieu was founded on 4 August 1443, at that time Burgundy was ruled by Duke Philip the Good.  The Hundred Years' War had recently ended by the signing of the Treaty of Arras in 1435. Massacres, however, continued with marauding bands (écorcheurs) still roaming the countryside, pillaging and destroying, provoking misery and famine.  Most of the people of Beaune were destitute, and the area had recently suffered an outbreak of plague.  Nicolas Rolin, the Duke's Chancellor, and his wife Guigone de Salins, responded by building a hospital and refuge for the poor.  He was given permission from Pope Eugene IV in 1441, the hospice was built and consecrated on December 31st 1452.

5

The building's design was most likely overseen by the Flemish architect Jacques Wiscrère.  There is a documentary record of a large range of Flemish and French masons, painters and glass cutters employed for its construction. The facade today is regarded as a superior example of Northern Renaissance civic architecture and a treasure trove of panel painting, given its numerous portraits of Rolin, his wife and members of his extended family.

The Hospices de Beaune consists of a pair of two-storied buildings arranged around a stone courtyard. The building wings are well-preserved today; they contain half-timber galleries and ornate rooftops with dormer windows. The hospital is arranged so that the wings served the office, kitchen and apothecary functions. The nuns and patients were housed nearer the chapel, towards the center of the complex.

The Hospices de Beaune received the first patient on 1 January 1452. Elderly, disabled and sick people, with orphans, women about to give birth and the destitute have all been uninterruptedly welcomed for treatment and refuge from the Middle Ages until today. This Catholic institution focused on healing both the body and spirit of its patients.

The charity auction been arranged annually since 1859, taking place on the third Sunday in November amid a three-day festival devoted to the food and wines of Burgundy called Les Trois Glorieuses.  The charity is preceded by a black tie dinner at the Clos de Vougeot on day one and followed by the lunch La Paulée de Meursault on day three.  The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune is a non-profit organization which owns around 61 hectares (150 acres) of donated vineyard land, much of this classified Grand and Premier cru.  With bidding by professional and private buyers, the barrels, from 31 cuvées of red wine and 13 of white wine, attain prices usually well in excess of the current commercial values, although the results give some indication of the trend in expected bulk wine prices for the vintage from the rest of the region.

Over the centuries, the hospital radiated outwards, grouping with similar establishments in the surrounding villages of Pommard, Nolay, Meursault. Many donations - farms, property, woods, works of art and of course vineyards - were made to it, by grateful families and generous benefactors. The institution is one of the best and oldest examples of historical, philanthropic, and wine-producing heritage, and has become linked with the economic and cultural life of Burgundy.
