Pelissero Barbera and Barbaresco two of the BEST Values in the Piedmont and ALL the wines from Pelissero on SALE!!
"I'm like old wine. They don't bring me out very often, but I'm well preserved." - Rose Kennedy, on her 100th birthday
Some people like old wines but we get a lot of bottles returned to us as bad, but they are just old. Most people do not drink a lot of wines that are 5+ years old but even fewer drink wines that are 10+ years old. I always say old wine is like scotch, it is an acquired taste.
Wine Watch has a lot of older vintage wines and not only is it an acquired taste, but it also requires special skills to open a bottle of 10+ year old wine. They make a number of different corkscrews, but I find that the long screw works best for me. The Ah So is also a good tool but for really old wines the long screw almost never fails.
With older wines decanting is a must, most great wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered so after 10+ years you will have some sediment in the bottle. To serve the wine so that it is not cloudy and to ensure that you do not mix up the sediment you must stand the bottle up for a few days before you open it, 1-2 days is usually enough time.
I always like to serve he wine in the bottle rather than the decanter at events so the guests can see the bottle so once you decanter the wine from the sediment you pour the remainder of the wine with the sediment in a glass and rinse out the bottle so you can pour the sediment free wine back in the clean bottle. The glass with the sediment is the taster to ensure that the wines is good, I will keep the sediment glasses till the next day to see how the wine has held up overnight as most great wines are always better the next say, you should cover the glass so no dust in the wine. Check double check, that is our motto here at the Wine Watch.
Two of my favorite grape varietals are both found in the Piedmont, Barbera and Nebbiolo. Barbera has a beautiful richness with lots of plum and cherry fruit with smooth silky tannins and a bright refreshing burst of acidity on the finish all the while giving you nuance of truffle and the earthy/minerality of the Piedmont. Nebbiolo for me is the perfect grape, it has all the spice and floral characteristics of Pinot Noir while giving you the tannic backbone and age ability of Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon. Nebbiolo has that earthy truffle and tar like character of the Piedmont as well and also has a firm hand of acidity making it one of the longest lived wines in the world- Like Rose Kennedy the best can last up to 100 years!
There are two DOCG’s for Nebbiolo in the Piedmont, Barolo and Barbaresco. Barolo is a much larger appellation to the southwest of Barbaresco. The wines of Barbaresco are said to be lighter and more elegantly fashioned than Barolo but they both can age for a very long time in the cellar. My favorite old vintage for the Piedmont that I have experienced is 1964 Gaja Barbaresco. We have shown this wine a half dozen times at events over the years and it was always a candidate for WOTN!
I don’t know if we have time to wait for the 2019’s to reach that age but just like in Tuscany this was an outstanding vintage in the Piedmont and somewhat drinkable in its youth. But if you don’t like green bananas or if you don’t have time to wait for 2019 to reach its prime we have an incredible offering on one of my favorite producers from Barbaresco with wines going back to outstanding 1996 vintage!
Our good friend Giorgio Pelissero has hosted several events over the years at Wine Watch and was here last in 2018 to break in the Wine Bar with Pelissero wines back to 1998, the Barbaresco Annata was WOTN but the 2003 Tulin was a close second- we have both of these wines on this offering!
Azienda Agricola Pelissero is a family-run vine-growing estate located in the district of Treiso, in the heart of the zone of production of Barbaresco. Many gradual changes have been performed by the successive generations of the Pelisseros who transformed the grape-selling activity started by Giovanni Pelissero into winemaking of all the estate-grown grapes. Winemaking takes place in a cellar surrounded by vineyards situated in a zone called Augenta, the biggest plot of land belonging to the property. The first bottles of wine dated back to 1960 and were produced by Luig Pelissero, whose work was followed by his son, Oenologist Giorgio who, after finishing his studies, decided to work full time at the winery. The Pelissero family takes care of all the activities from pruning the vines to marketing the wine. The estate consist of twenty hectares of vineyards which yield a total of 80,000 to 100,000 (according to the year) bottles of wine, namely Dolcetto d’Alba from two vineyards (Munfrina and Augenta), Barbera d’Alba Piani, Barbaresco, Barbaresco Vanotu (this is the dialectal word for the name Giovanni, Giorgio’s grandfather), Grignolino, Favorita, Freisa and Nebbiolo.

2021 Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani
Price: $30.00 Your Price: $26.40 Quantity in Stock: 57
(93 points) The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Piani is a knock-out. Creamy and ample, with striking depth, the 2021 has a ton to offer. Succulent red/purplish fruit, cedar, spice, new leather and a kiss of sweet French oak all build in this effortless, engaging Barbera. Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Oct 2023)
2019 PELISSERO BARBARESCO "NUBIOLA"
Price: $55.00 Your Price: $48.40
(94 Points) The 2019 Barbaresco Nubiola is quite the overachiever in this year's lineup from Pelissero . Aromatically intense and also quite deep , the Nubiola impresses with its balance . The blend of different sites was clearly an advantage. Bright red-toned fruit , cedar, tobacco , orange peel , and pomegranate lend notable complexity throughout . Give the tannins a few years to soften. Gallloni
2016 Pelissero Barbaresco "Nubiola" MAGNUM
Price: $108.00 Your Price: $95.04
(92 Points) "Nubiola is a trademarked name and not an official vineyard cru. The Pelissero 2016 Barbaresco Nubiola shows rich layers of dark fruit, spice, tar and pressed lilac. There is extra padding and fruit weight in this expression that comes from a sunny but classic vintage. The wine passes smoothly over the palate with integrated and a slightly dusty or dry quality to the tannins. This is a good near or medium-term Barbaresco."- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
2013 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola (5 Liter)
Price: $608.00 Your Price: $535.04
(91 Points) The 2013 Barbaresco Nubiola is soft, succulent and open-knit. Crushed flowers, mint, anise and dried cherries all lift from the glass in a surprisingly accessible, silky Barbaresco that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The 2013 is not especially complex, but it is delicious and approachable, especially with some air. The Nubiola is a blend of fruit from six different sites. The youngest vines are 20 years old. Price: $28.00 Your Price: $24.64
2021 Pelissero Dolcetto Augenta
Price: $31.25 Your Price: $27.50
Dolcetto is one of the most important wines of our winery. The microclimate of Treiso and its soil (extraordinary for growing Nebbiolo) give to the wine Dolcetto a very good tannic and sweet texture. The result is a balance between important structure and smoothness. The name derives from the old owner, a lady from Monferrato, who laboriously and diligently worked these lands.
Wine produced by trying to bring out the best varietal characteristics with the help of technical tools exalting the characteristics of the grape: controlled temperature during fermentation and short maceration of 4/5 days in order to preserve as much as possible fragrance and drinkability. After a cold decanting, it rests in stainless steel cask for 6/7 months, plus 1 month in the bottle.
The visual impact is a beautiful purple red very bright. The olfactory analysis reminds of fruit and typical aromas, including red cherry. The taste is a very nice balance among tannins, acidity and alcohol, so that the wine is sapid and pleasant. The aftertaste, slightly bitter, reminds of almonds which is the very typical characteristic of this wine.

Nebbiolo, Barbera and time: similarity and assonance inside a red Langhe DOC wine of innovative conception, of which the 02010 vintage observes its first decennial. The name of the wine is taken from the name of the Long Now Foundation, a non-profit entity based in San Francisco and created by a group of men of science and intellect, to which Stewart Brand and the artist Brian Eno belong. After moving to the United States and having noticed that in London the word "Now" had a broader significance than in New York, Eno decided to name Long Now the foundation which, starting with the expansion of the concept of time, encourages and supports long term responsibility by means of cultural interventions and projects. One of these is The Long Now Clock, a clock powered by the changes of seasons which advances one click every year, strikes every millennium and is designed to mark time for 10,000 years. While waiting for construction of this monument to farsightedness which will be installed in a Texas mountain, thanks to the involvement of Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, one can admire the first prototype at the Science Museum of London and a portion of its spectacular dial is visible on the label of the Long Now wine. Pelissero has captured the concepts and the spirit of the American foundation to reaffirm the importance of the long time a red wine with ageing potential needs in the vineyard, in the cellar and in the bottle.

Site: Treiso, Neive and Barbaresco villages Variety: Nebbiolo 100% Exposure: south - east - west Altitude: 200 – 400 m. Year of planting: all the Nebbiolo vines for Barbaresco planted in more recent years, up to 15 years old age Breeding form: gujot Density of plants per hectare: 5000 First and unique year of production: 1960 Soil: different soils in Barbaresco area. Characteristics: we produce this wine with the grapes that, according to the vintage, are not suitable for making Barbaresco. Among them, all new planted vineyards bought in the past few years, and consequently considered too young for producing a great Barbaresco. Technical notes: in vinification we try to exalt the Nebbiolo's characteristics of freshness: macerations are not too long and always temperature controlled. Ageing is made partly in barrique (20/30%) and the rest in 50 hl oak barrels for around 8/9 months. After blending, it rests in the bottle for 2 months and finally commercialized. Tasting sheet: clear, bright, purple red with evident clearer tannic nuances around the glass edge. Olfactory sensations are persistent, fragrant and wide open exalting the fruit of the wine. It is also rounded by evident perception of strawberry and raspberry typical in this wine. Good gustative persistence with the classic light tannin astringency of Nebbiolo, very well rounded by the wood aromas and other flavour components (proteins, salts, trivalent salts). Lovely finish, persistent and stimulating.
Barbaresco Tulin
Tulin is the new name, since the 2001 vintage, of the Barbaresco Annata. After seven years, sustained by the appreciations of public and critics, we have decided to name this wine after the vineyard where the grapes for this wine come from, whose climate, composition of the soil and exposure are of great value. In local dialect Tulin indicates a small circular metal vessel as commonly used in churches for retention of the melted wax from the candles or distribution of food to the cattle in the stables. A melting pot of spirituality and handicraft, the soul and hands of Vinegrowers. Tulin is pronounced with the accent on the i.
TECHNICAL NOTES: Oour aim to take into bottle the grapes characteristics conditions all the operations of transformation and ageing. This wine is produced with modern techniques and tools, but still in traditional way trying to harmonize the austerity of this great vine with the new conceptions of persuasiveness and pleasantness linked to international tastes. Maceration in contact with the skins for about 15 days in steel casks at controlled temperature and, after a period of natural decantation always in steel, the wine passes into wood where it rests for 18/20 months. Then the part, about 50%, aged in oak casks of 50 hl is blended with the other part aged in barrique. This allows us to avoid that an excessive presence of wood further dries this wine. After 9 months in bottles, it is fi nally released for sale.
TASTING SHEET: vivacious ruby colour. The nose expresses ample and fruity perfumes of magnesium and iron linked to the minerality of soil with well evident varietal notes and a right contribution of wood. The taste features the austerity typical of Nebbiolo completely and persuasiveness, saltiness and the right tannin give the taste a velvety and wrapping frame.

Barbaresco Vanotu
CHARACTERISTICS: vanotu is the diminutive in Piedmontese dialect of Giovanni, Giorgio’s grandfather and previous owner of this vineyard. Therefore it is a part of our winery to which we are very fond of. Thanks to the particular climate and exposure of this vineyard we can obtain even in poor vintages great character and personality wines.
WINE MAKING TECHNIQUES: produced through modern and innovative methods (controlled temperatures, mechanical automatic timed and planned mixing) trying to take into the bottle the maximum exaltation of the varietal characteristics of Nebbiolo grapes. Aged for 20/22 months in barriques (80% of them are new) then 9 months in bottles we aim at creating concentration, fruit, soft tannic complexity. Our aim is to make an innovative wine trying to maintain and exalt the great qualities of Nebbiolo. The fi rst bottled vintage was in 1960.
TASTING SHEET: Intense wide ruby colour, it expresses fruity notes of raspberry and cherry matched and well harmonized with persuasive woody notes of vanilla. The aromatic framework besides the typical notes of rose is completed by of sage, mint, thyme, camomile constant over the years: a real trademark for this soil. In the mouth it is velvety ample and fi lls up with sweet and lasting tannins. The great polyphenolic structure of Nebbiolo and the right acid tannic balance of this wine are synonyms of long lasting wine.
