“History’s lessons drowned in red wine”

Children’s Crusade by Sting

Hopefully none of our “Wine Drinking People” drown in Red wine from Hurricane Irma!  Looks like we are going to get a serious lesson in Mother Nature tomorrow night so you may not hear back from us for a few days as things get sorted out from the storm.  We are ready for the worst and the generators are gassed up so the Wine Bar may end up being a temporary Hurricane bunker after the storm. We are getting the appropriate bottles ready for this weekend and hopefully we will be back to our regular drinking schedule next week as we have two excellent events on the Calendar.

Stay safe, we will be watching over the wines here this weekend and we will be back open ASAP.  Wine Watch is open 7 days a week for our “Wine Drinking People” weather permitting!  I will be here tomorrow (Saturday) till the winds hit 45 MPH.

We had to reschedule the Vintage California Cabernet Sauvignon tasting that was supposed to happen tonight to Friday September 22nd.  But if you Cabernet Sauvignon lovers can’t wait till then we have an incredible 1997 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon tasting happening next Friday night!

The 1997 vintage...at 21 years old- how are they drinking now??

(93 points)  The dense blue/purple-colored 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a terrific nose of plums, cherry liqueur, cassis, and subtle new oak. It is beautifully pure, with gobs of fruit, low but adequate supporting acidity, and plenty of ripe tannin in the finish. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for just under two years in French oak, this is a beautifully made wine that can be drunk now or cellared for two decades. This wine is made from the famed Grace clone of Cabernet Sauvignon (from Grace Family Vineyards). (RP) (12/1999) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

1997 Behrens and Hitchcock Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvee Lola Napa

(93 Points)  The 1997 Cuvee Lola (a blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) is one of the finest Cabernet Franc-dominated wines I have tasted from northern California, ranking alongside the superb efforts turned in by Dalla Valle, La Jota, and Pride Mountain. The wine exhibits a cedary, cigar box, black currant, and raspberry-scented nose, superb ripeness, rich, fleshy, low acid flavors, and a rich but not weighty mid-palate and finish. This wine will be drinkable upon release, and keep for 12+ years.  The Wine Advocate

(93 points) The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (2,800 cases from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of mineral-infused black currants, and spicy oak. Full-bodied, structured, muscular, and multi-dimensional, it is approachable, but best cellared for 2-4 years, and drunk over the following 20-25 years. (RP) (12/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Quantity in Stock: 3

(94 points) The 1997 Dominus, a blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4.5% Merlot, is showing fabulously well. With 14.1% alcohol and a pH that would make many New World oenologists shudder (about 3.95), this wine is a fleshy, silky-textured, opulent wine with a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, coffee, jammy black cherry and plum-like fruit. Asian spice, licorice, and blackberry and cherry notes with tobacco spice all add to this complex, very involved, yet gorgeously symmetrical Dominus. The wine is medium to full-bodied, very concentrated, and silky-textured. (RP) (12/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

1997 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection Napa

(93 points) Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages. (12/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

1997 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

(90 points)  This wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as sweet tannin, and copious black currant fruit intermixed with soil undertones and licorice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, ripe, and nicely-textured with a long finish. Wine Advocate #141 Jun 2002

1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia

(100 Points)  An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness, there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and fruit intensity, and stunning purity. It is a perfect expression of Napa viticulture and wine that should continue to age effortlessly for two decades or more.  The Wine Advocate

(90 Points) The ambitious 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate possesses power, structure, and density. Spicy new oak competes with cassis in this full-bodied, moderately tannic wine.  The Wine Advocate

1997 Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

(94 points) This wine, produced by winemaking consultant Heidi Barrett, is impressive. There are 600 cases of the 1997, all from a 3.5-acre Cabernet Sauvignon parcel planted with the Grace clone. Sweet, rich, full, and concentrated is the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by pure black currant fruit intertwined with tobacco, vanillin, and spice. This lush, full-bodied effort displays sweet tannin, and cuts a powerful swath across the palate. The finish reveals high extraction and harmony. (RP) (2/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(100 Points) "The 1997 Harlan Estate is one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines I have ever tasted. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this enormously-endowed, profoundly rich wine must be tasted to be believed. Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are well-balanced by the wine's unreal richness and singular personality. The finish exceeds one minute. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2030." Quantity in Stock: 3

(94 points)  The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022.    Wine Advocate #143    Oct 2002

(92 Points) The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, is a beauty. The healthy ruby/purple color is followed by classic, unevolved but promising aromas of minerals, cedar, smoke, and black currants. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with admirable purity, a sweet, lush mid-palate, and ripe tannin in the finish. The top-notch 1997 is a classic, restrained. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. (94 Points) The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon was fashioned from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. It offers a boisterous rosemary and black fruit-scented nose. Big, broad, and chewy, this medium to full-bodied wine is packed with black fruits, spices, and hints of tar. It is masculine, concentrated, and in need of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. 1997 Fontodi Flaccianello Tuscany MAGNUM

Price: $599.00    Your Price: $527.12

Quantity in Stock: 1

(95 points) The 1997 Flaccianello della Pieve wraps around the palate with endless layers of dark fruit. In 1997 the grapes were very small because the intense heat of the year dehydrated the fruit. Dark red berries, pomegranate, spices, smoke, licorice, anise and rose petals burst from the glass with notable energy, power and grace. Even with all of its intensity, the 1997 is beautifully balanced from start to finish. This racy, full-bodied Flaccianello can be enjoyed today or cellared for up to a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

This complete vertical of Fontodi's flagship 100% Sangiovese Flaccianello was yet another of the remarkable tastings of my recent trip to Tuscany. Flaccianello is an interesting wine because the quality level that is the norm today only really starts around 2001. Prior to that the wines were very good, and sometimes even better than that, but not profound. In 2001 proprietor Giovanni Manetti made the decision to focus on his estate's best fruit rather than making Flaccianello as a single-vineyard wine. Since then, Flaccianello has routinely been among the most exciting wines in Tuscany. Much of the fruit that now goes into Flaccianello comes from vineyards in the Pecille sub-zone of Panzano with a full southern exposure. Today Flaccianello is 100% Sangiovese, but the first vintages up to and including 1984 have 15% white grapes, as was common at the time. The early vintages up until 1990 spent about one year in French oak barrels, 50% new. In the mid-1990s Manetti increased the period of barrel aging to 18 months with the 1997, and then to 24 months with the 2006. Today the percentage of new barrels is close to 100%.

(97 Points) Quintarelli's 1997 Alzero is a masterpiece. Blessed with extraordinary, captivating aromatics, it reveals new layers of spice, licorice, coffee, chocolate, cassis, minerals and sweet dark fruit with each successive taste. What I find most remarkable about this wine is that, despite being packed with jammy, concentrated fruit, it is remarkably light on its feet. It is a wine I never tire of tasting and is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017. eRobertparker.com # 173, Oct 2007

1997 Quintarelli Recioto 750ml

Price: $499.00    Sale Price: $425.00

Quantity in Stock: 2

(94 Points) The 1997 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico is a gorgeous, refined wine with layers of sweet, perfumed fruit that flow gracefully from its medium-bodied frame. The 1997 Recioto isn’t quite as extroverted as the profound 1995, but it does offer impeccable balance in a relatively understated, slender style for this house. Sweet spices, licorice, leather and incense linger on the long and immensely satisfying finish. I tasted the 1997 Recioto from both 375ml and 750ml bottles and found the wine consistently superb. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. It’s always a bit of a challenge to keep up with Giuseppe Quintarelli as he doesn’t follow a predictable schedule; the wines are simply released when he feels they are ready. Originally the 2000 Alzero was scheduled to be released this fall, but work in the vineyards pushed back the timetable a few months and I wasn’t able to taste the wine in time for this article. I have had the pleasure and privilege of drinking a number of Quintarelli's older, benchmark wines over the last few months, and at their best, they have no peers. eRobertParker.com # 185 Oct 2009

1997 Steele Chardonnay Late Harvest 375ml

Price: $33.00    Your Price: $29.04

Quantity in Stock: 4

The level of sugar in the shriveled grapes would be the equivalent to a Trockenbeerenauslese in Germany. Usually, we figure on getting around 175 gallons per ton from the white grapes. With this late harvest wine, we got around 60 gallons per ton. The winemaking protocol was similar to that used by Chateau Y' quem. Barrel fermented in French oakbarrels (50%) new. Very long, slow fermentation that lasted seven months. Finally stopped when the alcohol rose to the point where the yeasy were inhibited (when the alcohol gets high your would think that the yeast would become "uninhibited"???). Aged for three years in barrels prior to bottling. With such a high level of alcohol and sugar, this wine should age for another ten years easily

(93 Points) Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca.
