Santa Ynez Valley Guys Getaway Wine Weekend

"You know, the day you open a '61 Cheval Blanc … that's the special occasion."

Maya (advising Miles against being overly fussy about when he will drink a vintage Bordeaux wine he owns): Sideways

At Wine Watch we think that every day above ground is a special occasion that’s why we have so many “Once in Lifetime” tastings!

If you invested in first growths from 1982 you would have paid around $50 per bottle for these wines upon release.  Today, we have the 1982 Lafite Rothschild for sale on this offering at a price of $2999.00.    The 1982 vintage was one of the best investments that you could have ever made in the world of fine wine and we are drinking some great wines tonight from 1982.  As I always say- “we are doing scientific work with wine here at the Wine Watch”.  This is considered by many to be one of the greatest vintages in Bordeaux’s history and it made wine critic Robert Parker Jr. famous as he was one of the only people at that time that waxed poetic about the young wines.

If you have these wines in your cellar today they are drinking at or near their peak and we will be opening eleven wines from the 1982 vintage tonight.  Many of the lesser wines are past their peak to day but the top wines are still drinking beautifully and we have an amazing selection of classified growth Bordeaux on the table tonight.

For those of you that can’t make it we have an incredible selection of 1982 Bordeaux on this offering on SALE!

The fee for this tasting is less than the price of several of the wines on the table tonight and there are only 14 spaces available.  Chefs Toni and Dani will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines and the fee for this event which includes dinner is $695 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

1982 CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL ST. ESTEPHE

Price: $760.00                 Sale Price: $630.00              Quantity in Stock: 2

(96 Points) A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d'Estournel's 1982 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, and splendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggest this 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine! Wine Advocate # 129, Jun 2000

1982 CHATEAU DUHART-MILON PAUILLAC, FRANCE

Price: $365.00                 Sale Price: $295.00              Quantity in Stock: 12

(94 points) This blockbuster was a sleeper of the vintage long before the Rothschilds invested so heavily in modernizing this estate as well as began making a stricter selection. Close to full maturity, the 1982 Duhart Milon exhibits classic notes of creme de cassis, cedar, and flowers, medium to full body, a high level of glycerin, and a lusciousness and fleshiness that are very much in keeping with the vintage. 1982 CHATEAU GRAND PUY LACOSTE PAUILLAC

Price: $595.00                 Sale Price: $475.00              Quantity in Stock: 41

(96 Points) This is a tour de force, and one of the all-time great Grand-Puy-Lacostes ever produced, as I hope the 2000 and 2005 will become. This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with sweet tannin, shocking concentration, and layers of fruit, this irresistible 1982 is still an adolescent in terms of its evolution. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. Release price: ($85.00/case) Wine Advocate #183, Jun 2009

1982 CHATEAU GRUAUD LAROSE ST JULIEN

Price: $595.00                 Sale Price: $475.00              Quantity in Stock: 1

(96 points) One of the most powerful, massive wines of the vintage is the 1982 Gruaud Larose, a full-bodied, broad and concentrated effort redolent of ripe black fruits, loamy soil, smoked meats, leather, espresso roast and hints of cigar wrapper. Rich, layered and expansive, its deep core of ripe, fleshy fruit is framed by sweet, powdery tannins. As ever with the wines of the Cordier era, the fly in the ointment is that the wine's wild, somewhat animal profile is strongly marked by the presence of Brettanomyces, yet the 1982's intensely characterful, singular style means that I am personally able to overlook that defect. Still youthful, and actually evolving more slowly than the brilliant 1986, this is likely to number among the longer-lived wines of the vintage. (WK) (12/2022) Wine Advocate

1982 CHATEAU KIRWAN MARGAUX

1982 CHATEAU LA MISSION HAUT BRION PESSAC LEOGNAN BORDEAUX, FRANCE

Price: $2250.00 Sale Price: $1750.00       Quantity in Stock: 22

(100 Points) The greatest La Mission Haut Brion made between the 1975 and 1989, the 1982 is, stylistically, a dead-ringer for the ethereal 1959. One of the most massive wines of the vintage, it remains an adolescent in terms of evolution, but it can be drunk with great pleasure if it is decanted 2-3 hours in advance. A thick, unctuously-textured wine with massive richness as well as abundant notes of black fruits, truffles, creosote, scorched earth, smoke, and camphor, a colossal mouthfeel, a layered texture, incredible depth of fruit and glycerin, and copious, but well-integrated tannins that are largely concealed by the incredible amount of fruit. An old school La Mission, it is a tour de force that should continue to age effortlessly for another 40 years. A monumental wine! Wine Advocate # 183 Jun 2009

1982 CHATEAU LAFON ROCHET ST ESTEPHE

Price: $325.00                 Sale Price: $250.00                       Quantity in Stock: 47

(90 points) Very tight and closed, with loads of tannins and fruit. Not giving much now; needs an enormous amount of time.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. (JS)  (8/1992) Wine Spectator

1982 CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD PAUILLAC (MID SHOULDER, TORN LABEL)

1982 CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD PAUILLAC

Price: $3700.00 Sale Price: $2995.00                     Quantity in Stock: 12

(100 Points) The 1982 Lafite possesses a dark, dense ruby/purple color with only a subtle lightening at the rim. Spectacular aromatics offer jammy cherry and black fruits intertwined with lead pencil, mineral, and smoky wood scents. Powerful for a Lafite, this wine unfolds to reveal extraordinary richness, purity, and overall symmetry in addition to stunning flavor depth and persistence. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Plenty of tannin remains, and the wine displays a vibrancy and youthfulness that belie its 18 years of age. The modern day equivalent of Lafite-Rothschild's immortal 1959, the 1982 will enjoy another 30-70 years of life! An amazing achievement! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2070. Wine Advocate # 129 June 2000

1982 CHATEAU LATOUR PAUILLAC (HIGH SHOULDER FILL)

Price: $2400.00 Sale Price: $1999.00       Quantity in Stock: 1

1982 CHATEAU LATOUR PAUILLAC BORDEAUX FRANCE

Price: $3500.00               Sale Price: $2750.00              Quantity in Stock: 16

(100 Points) As I indicated in the review of the 1982 Bordeaux, this is an unusual Latour in the fact that it has always been precocious. It has been jammy, forward, and delicious no matter when the cork was pulled, in total contrast to its two first-growth siblings, Mouton Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild. The dense, opaque garnet-colored 1982 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. Sweet, smoky, roasted aromas in the nose combine with jammy levels of black currant, cherry, and prune-like fruit. It possesses extraordinary concentration and unctuosity, with a thick, fat texture oozing notes of cedar wood, tobacco, coffee, and over-ripe fruit. Low acidity as well as high alcohol (for Bordeaux) give the wine even more glycerin and textural chewiness. The finish lasts forever. The only Latour that remotely resembles the 1982 is the 1961, which has a similar texture and succulence. Anticipated maturity: now-2040 The Wine Advocate Issue 129, June 2000.

1982 CHATEAU MARGAUX MARGAUX BORDEAUX, FRANCE

Price: $1999.00               Sale Price: $1695.00              Quantity in Stock: 74

(98 Points) Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margaux may be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintages produced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis and floral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a Chateau Margaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. Wine Advocate # 183 Jun 2009

1982 CHATEAU MEYNEY ST ESTEPHE

Price: $295.00                 Sale Price: $235.00              Quantity in Stock: 7

(92 points) Drunk from magnum, the 1982 Meyney is showing very well, bursting with aromas of sweet red berries and plums mingled with notions of truffle, loamy soil and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, it's a broad, textural wine with good concentration and a long, lusty finish. (WK)  (12/2022)  Wine Advocate

1982 CHATEAU MONTROSE ST ESTEPHE BORDEAUX, FRANCE

Price: $695.00                 Sale Price: $550.00              Quantity in Stock: 29

(96 points) Intense aromas of kirsch, currant and spice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with round, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This is complex, changing on the nose and palate. Layered and structured. Will improve for many years to come. (JS) (3/2006)  Wine Spectator

1982 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHCHILD PAUILLAC, FRANCE

Price: $2400.00               Sale Price: $1725.00              Quantity in Stock: 12

(100 Points) Opaque purple-colored showing absolutely no signs of lightening, Mouton's 1982 is a backward wine. Still tasting like a 4-5 year old Bordeaux, it will evolve for another half century. At the Philadelphia tasting, it was impossibly impenetrable and closed, although phenomenally dense and muscular. However, on two other recent occasions, I decanted the wine in the morning and consumed it that evening and again the following evening. It is immune to oxidation! Moreover, it has a level of concentration that represents the essence of the Mouton terroir as well as the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon it contains. Cassis, cedar, spice box, minerals, and vanillin are all present, but this opaque black/purple Pauillac has yet to reveal secondary nuances given its youthfulness. It exhibits huge tannin, unreal levels of glycerin and concentration, and spectacular sweetness and opulence. Nevertheless, it demands another decade of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for another seven or eight decades. I have always felt the 1982 Mouton was perfect, yet this immortal effort might be capable of lasting for 100 years! Readers who want to drink it are advised to decant it for at least 12-24 hours prior to consumption. I suggest double decanting, i.e., pouring it into a clean decanter, washing out the bottle, and then repouring it back into the bottle, inserting the cork, leaving the air space to serve as breathing space until the wine is consumed 12-24 hours later. The improvement is striking. The fact that it resists oxidation is a testament to just how youthful it remains, and how long it will last. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2075. 1982 CHATEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE AU BARON DE PICHON-LONGUEVILLE PAUILLAC, FRANCE MAGNUM

Price: $1595.00               Sale Price: $1250.00              Quantity in Stock: 5

(94 points) Excellent typicity here and a wine that left a lasting impression from the tasting. A floral nose with delicate fruit expression - light, summer red berries. Bright and clean on the palate, quite crystalline and pure with a fine tannic structure. I like the acidity and the sheer brightness. Quite a mineral edge that comes across as a touch lean and austere with liquorice, crushed graphite on the end. This is very enjoyable to drink now but doesn't feel like it has a massive amount of life left. Mentholated on the close of play which gives a nice lift and moreish appeal. 1982 CHATEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 375ML

Price: $525.00                 Sale Price: $425.00              Quantity in Stock: 5

(100 Points) One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! Wine Advocate #183, Jun 2009

1982 CHATEAU RAUZAN-SEGLA MARGAUX

Price: $350.00                 Sale Price: $275.00              Quantity in Stock: 15

(92 points) Popular claret culture, in the wake of Robert Parker’s pronouncement many years back that the 1986 vintage of Château Rausan-Ségla was the first top flight vintage here in a generation, tends to ignore the wines made here in the first half of the decade of the 1980s. However, I have been very impressed previously with both the 1983 and 1985 versions, and had higher expectations than any of my guests for the 1982 Château Rausan-Ségla in our lineup. Happily, my expectations were born out with a superb bottle and this has to be one of the finest wines made in the commune in 1982. The bouquet is beautifully complex and quite exuberant, jumping from the glass in the property’s signature blend of black raspberry, black cherry, cigar smoke, dark soil tones, a beautiful spread of spice elements, just a hint of nutskin and a discreet framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and really has an excellent core of fruit (particularly for a 1982 Margaux, as this commune is not as universally successful as most others in this vintage), with excellent focus and balance and still a bit of suave tannin adding backend grip to the long, complex and utterly satisfying finish. This is a bit more sappy at the core than the classical 1983, and has a bit less silky elegance of the 1985, but these three vintages at least prove that the reports of Château Rausan-Ségla not starting its renaissance until the 1986 vintage were a bit tardy! Fine, fine juice. (1/2020)  John Gilman

1982 CHATEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE, PESSAC-LEOGNAN, FRANCE

Price: $295.00                 Sale Price: $250.00              Quantity in Stock: 4

1982 CHATEAU TALBOT, SAINT-JULIEN, FRANCE

Price: $375.00                 Sale Price: $325.00              Quantity in Stock: 8

(94 points) The brilliant 1982 Talbot is a reference point for this estate, and in my experience, only the 1945 can match its quality. Offering up rich aromas of blackberries, smoked meats, loamy soil, licorice and black olives, it's full-bodied, broad and textural, with a thick, fleshy attack that segues into an ample, muscular mid-palate. Rich and savory, it's a compelling wine in its prime today. There's no reason to defer gratification. (WK)  (12/2022)  Wine Advocate
