Emidio Pepe, a benchmark producer in Abruzzo since 1964, is renowned for crafting age-worthy wines through traditional and biodynamic practices. The estate's vineyards are located in the northern province of Teramo, characterized by clay and limestone soils. Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, the terroir provides excellent conditions for cultivating Montepulciano and Trebbiano grapes.
The 2021 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is produced from hand-harvested grapes, which are foot-trodden in wooden tubs to avoid contact between iron presses and the fruit's acids, as well as to achieve subtle maceration. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in cement tanks, and the wine is aged in these glass-lined cement vessels for 18 to 24 months. Bottled without fining or filtration, the wine continues to develop complexity over time. The 2021 vintage exhibits a pale lemon hue with a complex bouquet of orchard fruits, chamomile, fresh-cut grass, cucumber, mint, and white pepper. The palate is round yet vibrant, showcasing a mineral backbone and a harmonious balance between fruit and acidity. This Trebbiano demonstrates remarkable aging potential, promising to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.
