"[The senior partner] sipped [the French wine grower's Burgundy], rolled it round his tongued and swallowed it while the French principal sat complacently waiting for the expected praise. "Urine," he said. ...whereupon the Frenchman leapt to his feet, threw down his napkin and stormed out of the room. "Where has he gone," asked the senior partner? "Well, Sir, ... you did describe his Burgundy as er...urine."  "Fussy old gentleman isn't he? Pass the potatoes," said the senior partner.

Vintage Burgundy Tasting and Dinner at Chanson in the Royal Blues Hotel on Deerfield Beach.Still001.jpg

There are only a few things that will make me work on a Monday night and vintage Burgundy is one of them.  I am also excited about working with this new property on Hillsboro Beach, the Royal Blues Hotel.  This is an exclusive luxury hotel located on one of the nicest beaches in all of South Florida.

Tonight, we have an incredible line-up of 10 Premier Cru and Grand Cru red Burgundies from top level producers including legendary vintages like 1976, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2005.  The Chanson restaurant is normally closed on Monday nights but to introduce it to our “Wine Drinking People” the chef has prepared a special tasting menu for us and we have the entire restaurant to ourselves this evening to enjoy these incredible wines.  There are only 15 spaces available for this event and the fee is $325 all-inclusive, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or email andy@winewatch.com.

Line-up of Vintage Burgundy

1976 Louis Jadot Pernand Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre

This clos is not far from the village of Pernand, on calcareous, stony soil, facing east. The Croix de Pierre is a large stone cross at the entrance to the vineyard. Most of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir. The fruit is fermented in tanks, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for about 15 months before bottling.

An outstanding vintage. Low yields but exceptional concentration.  Most of the Grands Crus are still somewhat closed.  Harvest began on 8 September.

1978 Domaine Groffier Chambertin Clos De Beze Grand Cru

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is a Grand Cru vineyard adjacent to Chambertin and was the first vineyard developed in Gevrey chambertin int he 7th century.  The wines from this Grand Cru are also allowed to be labeled Chambertin, but Chambertin-Clos de Bèze has built up a strong enough reputation for its own wines that this is rarely necessary. Clos de Bèze is 36.3 acres, about 3.6 acres larger than Chambertin itself, and produces roughly 5,700 cases each year, in comparison to Chambertin's 5,000.

The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze from Groffier is an extremely  complex wine, with layers of flavor.  Berries and currants, flowers, mint, brown spices, earth, and minerals that open up as the wine is exposed to air. A classic Clos de Bèze, with lots of power and structure but enough flavor to make the wine enjoyable even at an early age. But this wine should be aged; perhaps 10-20 years is the right amount of time, this 1978 is a classic vintage in Burgundy and it is a rare find, this should be a contender for wine of the night!!

A very sunny summer, small quantities and therefore a very nice vintage, especially for the reds.

1983 Domaine Rene Leclerc Gevrey Chambertin lavaux St. Jacques

René Leclerc and his brother Philippe are two of Gevrey's most conspicuous 'characters', and reviewers often spend more time discussing their looks and habits than their wines. The fact of
the matter is that René is a true Burgundy vigneron in the finest sense of the word, a man who spends more time outdoors than in the laboratory or in the cooperage. He knows his vines
intimately, and devotes his energies to producing the best and most authentic fruit from a series of well-located vineyards. Vinifications are traditional, because fancy winemaking techniques are not needed when one has top quality grapes.

The result is a range of rich, terroir-driven reds, unmistakably Gevrey-Chambertin in both flavour and style. Each vineyard bottling displays the subtle nuances that differentiate one 'cru' from another. New oak is used more than before, but never so much as to mask these complexities. Both Robert Parker and Pierre-Antoine Rovani (Parker's nominated Burgundy expert) have lavished praise on this domaine, which is now rated among the very best in the important village of Gevrey-Chambertin.

1985 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Champans Volnay Premier Cru

The vineyards of the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville are in the best communes. They are located on southeast facing slopes allowing the vines to take full advantage of the morning sun. The soil is composed of chalk and marle. This rocky soil absorbs the heat of the day and releases it at night to extend the growing season and lead to full maturity in the grapes. The steep slopes of the vineyards allow for well drained soil on which the grape varieties thrive.

This estate was one of the first in Burgundy to bottle and market its wines on its own. Jacques d'Angerville died in 2003 and the domaine is run by Guillaume d'Angerville and his brother-in-law Renaud de Villette.

1985 Louis Jadot Les Cazetiers Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru

Gevrey Chambertin is the northernmost of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premiers Crus and 8 Grands Crus.
Half of the Premiers Crus of Gevrey lie scattered around the perimeter of the Grands Crus; the other half occupy a steep, southeast facing slope to the north, with calcareous clay soils.
The « Cazetiers » vineyard is situated on that easterly exposed slope, nearly at the same altitude of the Chambertin Grand Cru vineyards, and bordering the Clos Saint Jacques. It is considered to be one of the best Premiers Crus.
Louis Jadot produces a robust wine with exceptional depth, vigorous red fruit flavours  and aromatic bouquet that is structured for longevity.

1988 Domaine Comte Senard Corton Clos des Meix Grand Cru

In 1857, Jules Senard, great grandfather of the current owner created the original “Corton Clos Des Meix” vineyard. Covering a surface of 6 acres, the vineyard has been a “Monopole” (under exclusive control) ever since.

Over the years, the acquisition of prestigious appellations such as Corton Clos Du Roi, Corton Bressandes and Corton Paulands has increased the prestige and high reputation of the Comte Senard Estate.

This choice, carefully thought over and discussed among our family, has allowed us to offer an incomparable selection of the best wines, spread over 22 acres of prime vineyards. Aged in the Estate’s cellars built in the 14th Century by Benedictine monks from the Abbaye de Sainte Marguerite, our wines offer the guarantee of high quality.

An enthusiastic believer of initial cold-soaking and temperature control during fermentation process since 1988, Philippe Senard passionately defends these wine-making methods which provide the Corton and Aloxe Corton appellations all the qualities necessary for good ageing.

Since the year 2000, Lorraine has followed on from her father. Her first white wine vinification was with the 2002 vintage and the 2005 vintage for the red. Lorraine’s approach is very much inspired from the previous generations’ respect in keeping the Corton spirit alive : deep robe, red fruit aromas, finesse and powerful.
The Estate’s “Monopole” (exclusive production) exposed full south and bordering on the Charlemagne area. Distinguished and flattering. The most pleasant of all the Cortons when young.
Production : 4000 bottles

1989 Louis Jadot Corton Grand Cru

The commune of Aloxe-Corton, located above Pernand Vergelesses at the northern end of the Côte de Beaune, has the unusual distinction of having over half its area covered in Grand Cru vineyards.
It has an exposure ranging from east to south and Southwest.  The Grand Cru appellation of Corton covers different vineyards among Aloxe Corton, Ladoix and Pernand.  Corton is distinct from the individual Grand Cru vineyard "Le Corton".
Maison Louis Jadot Corton Grand Cru yields a complex, powerful wine that is rich yet restrained, with concentrated Pinot Noir fruit and a full, fragrant berry and oak bouquet.

1990 Louis Jadot Domaine des Heritiers Vignes Franches 'Clos des Ursules' Monopole Premier Cru

Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules is the original vineyard (lying within the larger ‘Vignes Franches’ Cru) that the Jadot family farmed from 1826. It is also a ‘monopole’ vineyard, i.e. a vineyard that only Jadot own, farm and make the wines from, somewhat of an advantage in a region that is defined by its fractious nature and large number of vine growers. The Clos des Ursules is aged similarly to the Grèves, but underwent a longer fermentation of 5 weeks, with which winemaker Frédéric Bannier extracted deeper red colour and fruit aroma.

Clos des Urusules lies close to Pommard and shares the longevity of some of the more substantial Pommard Crus.

1993 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

As early as 1365, we find the vineyard referred to under the name of CLOUX DES LAMBREY in the deeds of Citeaux Abbey. In 1789, at the time of the French Revolution, the property was sold and divided between 74 owners and reunited in 1868.

Louis Joly made improvements to this handsome residence built in 1630 and restored the unity of the property DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS. In 1866 these works are finished by the new owner Albert-Sebastien Rodier (Maison Henri de Bahèzre from Nuits-Saint-Georges) with his grandsons Camille and Albert. Camille has founded the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and Albert managed the family estate in Burgundy. The Rodier family ensured an efficient promotion of their Clos des Lambrays.
In 1938 Albert sold the estate to his friend Renée Cosson. Since this moment the estate is “falling in a sleep” like “sleeping beauty” according to Jean-François Bazin.

In 1979, shortly after the death of Renée Cosson, the estate was acquired by Roland de Chambure and the brothers Fabien and Louis Saier. They managed to wake up this “sleeping beauty” by important investments and with the support of the oenologist Thierry Brouin. Still today Thierry Brouin is due to his competencies and passion the guarantor for the quality of the wines from the estate.
On April 27th, 1981 the Clos des Lambrays was promoted by decree to GRAND CRU.

2005 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard Grand Epenots Premier Cru

Top-notch Pommard is one of the most cellar-worthy and brilliant wines in the Côte de Beaune, and no domaine in the village makes greater Pommard than that of Domaine Michel Gaunoux. Domaine Michel Gaunoux, first started in 1885 by Alexandre Gaunoux, has a long, enviable track record for producing brilliant Pommards (not to mention superb Cortons and Beaunes), that age gracefully and develop complexity as profound as all but the very top handful of grand cru terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Given the legacy of great wines this estate has produced over the course of the last hundred and twenty years, it is remarkable that the wines of Michel Gaunoux are not better known, but the domaine prefers to keep a low profile while continuing to turn out their interpretation of great traditional Burgundy. But make no mistake, this is one of the greatest red wine estates in all of Burgundy.

(100 Points)  I cannot think of a more profound, young red Burgundy tasted than DRC's 1990 La Tache. Although it still requires another 3-4 years of cellaring, it is incredibly endowed, with an extraordinary perfume of Asian spices as well as jammy black raspberries, cherries, and blackberries infused with smoke, toast, and dried herbs. Full-bodied, but ethereal, with layers of flavor, as well as mind-boggling delicacy and complexity, this youthful La Tache will be at its finest between 2004-2015. eRobertParker.com, Feb 2002

Tasting note: (bottled barrel by barrel). Medium ruby color. Initially, this is aromatically tight and closed but after 2 hours in the glass, it absolutely explodes from the glass with a breathtaking panoply of Asian spices, exotic fruit aromas and a touch of earth followed by rich, lush, almost opulent flavors that melt in the mouth and coat the palate with a layer of velvet on the fantastically long finish.

Burghound Review: This is a dramatic wine in every sense of the word yet it's not at all showy but rather discreet and understated. I particularly like the sense of inner power and purity of expression and this is as good a wine as I ever hope to drink. It should last for another 50 years and if you ever have the chance, don't miss it! Consistent notes. Tasted: Jul 04, 2005 Score: 99 Drink: 2010 to 50

Robert Parker review:  (98 points) The 1990 Romanee-Conti should ultimately be the most compelling and complex of the DRC wines. Normally it possesses a lighter color than either La Tache or Richebourg, but in 1990 it boasts a surprisingly saturated color that is the equal of La Tache and Richebourg. The nose offers up sweet, clove, cinnamon, and blackberry aromas intermingled with toasty, smoky new oak. Lavishly rich and full-bodied, with abundant tannins, this profound, surprisingly large-scaled, tannic wine boasts more muscle than usual. Let's hope that the billionaires that buy it have as much taste as money. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025.

The DRC 1990s, all of which were bottled in April/May, are among the deepest colored wines from this domaine that I have tasted in the last decade. Moreover, they are firmly structured, with significant tannins from both the vintage and from the aging in 100% new oak barrels. For the fortunate few who have had the discretionary income to afford the other great vintages of the DRC from the eighties, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1988, and 1989, the question is - are the 1990s superior? I am not sure they are any better than the 1980s, 1985, and 1988s, but they undoubtedly represent a classic, concentrated, long-lived style of wine. Moreover, all of these wines should have a more graceful evolution and broader window of drinkability than the tannic 1988s, as well as potentially greater longevity than the succulent and opulent 1985s. All of these offerings are outstanding, with that tell-tale complex, exotic fragrance that the DRC routinely achieves. Wine Advocate #83 Oct 1992

(94 points)  For some reason, this 1995 Chambertin is not quite firing on all cylinders, even though it is a lovely wine. It has a seductive bouquet with Morello, strawberry, a light marine influence and hints of Provencal herbs filtering through with time, though never quite achieving the bravura performance of the 1996 (for example.) The palate has a very fine lattice of tannins and perfect acidity, moderate weight in the mouth with beguiling symmetry, yet there is not the density of nobility of the succeeding vintage from Rousseau. Don’t feel guilty popping the cork now, but of course there is another ten years of pleasure for those who prefer to wait.  eRobertParker.com #215, Oct 2014

Tasted March 2013: "Brick at the core but pale at the rim, this 15+ year old wine is bright with notes of dried red fruit and earth notes. Not as big a wine as the 1996 Pommard but more elegant. It’s well-balanced with rich fruit and a very long finish. Sees 25% new oak for 18 months.  As reflected in these wines, 1995 was a more accessible vintage than 1996." International Wine Review 92

(94 Points) This is less elegant but more complex still than the '05 Grand Epenots with very ripe notes of plum and dark berry fruit along with the classic animale undertones. The big-bodied flavors possess the same highly sophisticated mouth feel with excellent mid-palate concentration as well as an abundance of extract that largely, if not completely, buffers the almost chewy but not rustic finish. There is an opulence to this wine but make no mistake, this is a very serious wine that is unapologetically built to age."  Burghound
