“Wine had such ill effects on Noah’s health that it was all he could do to live 950 years. Show me a total abstainer that ever lived that long.”

Our sole effort here is to drink more of the world’s greatest wines and we like to cover all the bases, the Friuli region of Northern Italy is next.   One of Italy’s top producers from Alto Adige where they produce some of the world’s greatest whites as well as some of the most unique reds is Le Vigne De Zamo.  In addition to making obscure varietals they produce some of the world’s most famous varietals, so there is something for everything in this line-up of wines.

Join us as we welcome to South Florida Chiara Destefanis from Le Vigne Di Zamo for a special tasting of new releases, some of which are 10+ years old. This iconic property from Northern Italy makes some of the best wines and some of the greatest values in all the wine world.

2013 LE VIGNE DI ZAMO PINOT GRIGIO FRUILI
Price: $27.50       Your Price: $24.20

This Pinot Grigio is made in the traditional style, they leave the juice in contact with the skins for several days to extract some of the flavor and this also gives the wine structure and an added dimension of flavor to the finish. Displaying aromas of Asian pear and fresh green apple fruit compliments the lime, honey, white flowers and wet stone minerality on the nose, fairly complex. Full flavored Pinot Grigio on the palate with a note of tannins, but has a good deal of ripe fruit through the middle with finishing with fine acidity. Finish 35+ VERY GOOD +

2013 LE VIGNE DI ZAMO FRIULI COLLI ORIENTALI FRIULANO

2011 LE VIGNE DI ZAMO FRIULI COLLI ORIENTALI FRIULANO VIGNE CINQUANT'ANNI
Price: $40.50       Your Price: $35.64

The 2011 vintage produced excellent wines throughout northern Italy, most of the major regions experiencing a long growing season and a later harvest meant that the grapes had time to develop fully without being stressed by too much heat or cold weather at harvest.  The best wines from this vintage will last for decades in your cellar.  OUR TASTING NOTES: Fresh and lively lemon citrus fruit on the nose with notes of perfume, white flowers and pear and wet stone.  Fresh and clean flavors of lime zest and distinct mineral notes through the finish, very distinctive.  Finish 45+  TASTING DATE:  04/04/14.

A bit about the Winery:

History has marched back and forth across this relatively narrow strip of land. In Roman times it was a vital outpost, with Aquileia serving as a bastion against marauding Gauls. Later, the infamous Huns forced that fortified town's inhabitants to seek refuge by founding the town of Grado on an island in the lagoon, much as the less civilized tribes to the west had built the settlement we now know as Venice. For most of the ensuing centuries, shrewd local leaders managed to keep the region essentially independent.

However, a quick glance at the map shows why the Austrian Hapsburgs fought hard to change that status quo. Once under their dominion, Trieste was declared a free port and quickly became Mitteleuropa's gateway to the East. Immigrants flocked here from all over the Mediterranean, giving Italy's easternmost city a cosmopolitan air matched only by Naples at the time. Today, its spacious boulevards, handsome buildings and vaguely dowdy magnificence make it something of a Vienna-By-The-Sea.

The Hapsburgs ruled here through the 19th century, and all the while the friulani longed to see their region returned to Italy. But that was not to be until after the First World War, and even then it was short-lived, because a significant chunk of the territory to the east and south of Trieste was awarded to the state of Yugoslavia in recognition of its valiant fight against the Nazis in World War II. The region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia was not created until 1963, and many of its towns still bear vivid signs of Austrian and Slavic influence in their lifestyle, folklore and cuisine.
The Zamo family has always loved wine:  from the time that Luigi Zamo, father of Tullio and grandfather of Pierluigi and Silvano, opened his Osteria (Tavern) in Manzano in 1924, through the family’s purchase of their first wine-making estate, the VIGNE DAL LEON, in 1978 (which gets its name from both, the outline of the hills and the metaphor for Tullio, with his watchful eye over the vineyards).  Their goal was to produce first-class wines, not only to drink with friends, but also for the sheer joy of producing truly “great” bottles.  There are ten hectares under vine in the municipality of Premariacco, on the gentle hillslopes of ROCCA BERNARDA.  The wines express all the character of the tiny but privileged sub zone.  Pinot Bianco and Malvasia, “Tullio Zamo” (barrel-fermented Pinot Bianco), Tazzelenghe and Schioppettino (French oak aged red wines of native Friulian varieties), and Pinot Nero.

The ABBAZIA DI ROSAZZO label, was born in 1981 when archiepiscopal vineyards were reclaimed.  Another 15-hectare estate (at Rosazzo), was acquired in 1996 to further the experience and insights attained and matured over all the years of winemaking.

The Guyot-trained vine stock includes Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon as well as the variety for which Rosazzo has always been renowned, Ribolla Gialla.  The unique qualities of the Rosazzo terrior are enhanced by native Friulian vines such as Pignolo and Picolit alongside international varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes that go into RONCO DELLE ACACIE (Chardonnay Blend) and RONCO DEI ROSETI (Bordeaux Blend).

The family’s commitment was further evident with their purchase of another twelve hectares on the slopes of Buttrio, a small but superior vineyard producing Tocai Friulano, Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Cabernet…let’s not forget “Vigne Cinquant’Anni”, which are 50 year-old vineyards producing limited production, low-yield Tocai Friulano and Merlot wines.
