Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.
Benjamin Franklin
I remember the first time that I heard about Paul Hobbs. I was working at Cafe Maxx and Jim Turner called me on the phone and said- "Andrew get some information on this guy Paul Hobbs, his wines are getting big press and we should have them on the wine list at Cafe Maxx." So I called up Healdsburg information and asked for the number for Paul Hobbs, dialed it up and low and behold guess who answered the phone- Paul Hobbs himself!Â
Well, this was just when he was starting out and Paul did not even have a distributor for his wines at this point. I quickly ordered everything that Paul had to sell and we were off and running with Paul Hobbs wines, Café Maxx was the first restaurant in the state of Florida to carry Paul's wines. After a few years of bootlegging these wines into the state, I thought it was time that we starting doing things a bit more legal and I recommended that we clear the wines through Augustan Wine Imports and the rest is history!
Today Paul is one of California’s most renowned international wine consultants. He consults with over a dozen bodegas in Argentina, a few wineries in Chile and has done work in several other countries like Hungary and Armenia. Some of Paul's clients over the years: Peter Michael Winery, Vine Cliff Winery, Lewis Cellars, Merus, Stewart Cellars, Clos Pegase and Constant to name a few.
Paul went to Argentina for the first time with Nicolas Catena in 1989, fell in love with the vineyards there and decided to set up shop with his own winery in 1998 as well as consulting for several of the top names. I have included everything that is available from both Paul Hobbs winery in California and from Vina Cobo and friends in Argentina on this offering after the announcement for the tasting.
Join us as we sample several of the new releases from Vina Cobos, Paul Hobbs’ winery in Mendoza. Ian Gutierruz, Regional Sales Manager for Paul will be on hand to explain the wines and Wine Watch Catering’s Toni Lampasone will be making a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines. The fee for this tasting is $55 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

A bit about Paul Hobbs:
Paul was one of the first California winemakers to focus on single-vineyard wines, Paul Hobbs took the challenge one step further by dedicating himself to crafting unfiltered and unfined wines, fermented with native yeasts. His vision has resulted in exciting, structured wines that are rooted in classic old world techniques and, at the same time, are distinctly Californian in their expression. And, he continues to be a leader of Argentina’s ongoing winemaking revolution. Not bad for a farm boy from upstate New York.
Here is what Paul can tell you in his own words about his venture into the wine business:
"I was told, a long time ago, that the key to good winemaking is paying attention.
I started paying attention at an early age. Specifically, the day my dad brought home a bottle of 1962 Château d’Yquem and poured it into little paper cups around the family dinner table. The bouquet, the flavor, and the experience made an impression on me. I became passionate about wine and the vineyards that produce the wine. In 1969, I convinced my father to uproot a section of our apple orchard and replant it with wine grapes, and my father put me in charge of the endeavor.
My botany professor at the university of Notre Dame, a former winemaker at Christian Brothers Winery in California, encouraged me to attend his weekly wine-tasting seminars. I had enrolled at Notre Dame with the intention of becoming a doctor. These seminars shifted that focus, igniting what has become a lifelong career in winemaking.
I enrolled in the Master of Food Science program in the Department of Enology at the University of California at Davis. My thesis on oak extraction led to a job at Robert Mondavi Winery as a research technician. Valuable hands-on production experience resulted in a promotion to Enologist. Among other responsibilities I was assigned to the Opus One team, and in 1981 was appointed Head Enologist.
After several vintages with Opus One, I moved on to join Simi Winery in February 1985 as Assistant Winemaker. One of my first tasks was to author a new cabernet sauvignon style for the winery. Extended macerations and gentle handling of the fruit resulted in rich, supple wines that caught the attention of the press and wine-buying public alike. I was appointed Vice-President/Winemaker in 1989.
While at Simi, my interest in new and emerging growing regions, particularly the wine-growing regions of Chile and Argentina, intensified. It was while exploring these areas that I met Nicolas Catena. He invited me to return to Mendoza in 1989 to take charge of a new project making Argentina’s first world-class chardonnay. I accepted his offer.
At about the same time I began consulting for several premium California wineries, including Peter Michael, Lewis, Vine Cliff, Fisher and Chalone.
Having put so much energy into helping others improve the quality of their wines, I eventually felt compelled to take on the challenge of making wines under my own label. In addition, learning to understand other great winemaking regions deepened my appreciation for what is unique about California; its temperate, sun-drenched valleys, rolling hills and coastal slopes display seemingly endless winegrowing potential.
When I founded the Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991, I set out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. I began with just three wines-one chardonnay, one pinot noir and one cabernet sauvignon. Working to capture a "sense of place" and terroir encouraged me to develop and refine a personal style rooted in tradition but embracing the ripe, forward expression to which the landscape and culture of California naturally lend themselves. Over the years, the small family of wines has grown to over a dozen as numerous new and historic vineyards have captured my attention since that first vintage.
Paul Hobbs wines were produced at shared facilities through 1998, when we purchased 19 acres of land in the Russian River Valley. Fourteen acres were planted to five clones of pinot noir and became the Lindsay Vineyard, named in honor of my great grandmother. In 2003, we completed construction of a state-of-the-art gravity flow winery overlooking the vineyard. In the summer of 2006, we inaugurated a private guest venue, Lindsay House, on the remaining land. In addition we have planted chardonnay at two neighboring properties, Edward James and El Molino vineyards
The wines we are currently producing are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation in my continuing adventure with wine. It is my great fortune that the wines I make with my dedicated team have appealed to many people around the globe. The success of the Paul Hobbs label has only furthered my curiosity and drive to find new and exciting places in the world to make wine. So, in addition to making wine in California and in Mendoza with Vina Cobos, I am currently a consultant for wineries in the U.S., Chile and Argentina. I have recently added Hungary to the list as my newest challenge and look forward to many more."

Finca 8 is located in La Consulta, in the Valle de Uco region of Mendoza, Argentina. The property’s 69 acres are set against the backdrop of the Andes mountains at 3,280 feet elevation with deep sandy loam soils layered with cobble.
The elegantly styled wine displays intense flavors of plums, black cherries, and cassis underlined with malbec’s classic violet flower aromas. Unsweetened cocoa powder and hints of cigar box reflect the subtle oak notes set on a palate wrapped in fine tannins.
By keeping the best blocks of Malbec fruit for Finca 8, and selling the rest to neighboring wineries, proprietor Hernán Fragueiro Fr??as achieves his goal of producing less than 2,000 cases of a single varietal wine that offers unique style and flavors.

Riglos

Dario and Fabian have been friends since childhood, but only recently found out that their grandparents had grown up in the same small town of Riglos, Argentina. With the establishment of the Riglos brand, the pioneering spirit of two immigrant families, from Germany and Ireland respectively, is strengthened in partnership and commemorated in name. Sourced exclusively from their estate vineyard in the Valle de Uco region of Mendoza, the portfolio is comprised of three wines: a malbec, a cabernet sauvignon and a red blend, all styled to strike a balance between vivid varietal expression and elegant structure.

(90 Points) Readers looking for wines packed with flavor as well as personality can do no better than uber-consultant Paul Hobbs’ line-up of Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Syrahs. All of his bottled wines showed even stronger than they did from barrel tastings. All of these Chardonnays spend between 10 and 16 months in barrel, with the percentage of new oak ranging from 80% (for the Cuvee Agustina), 70% (for the Walker Station), and 55-65% for the Ritchie, Ulises Valdez, and Richard Dinner cuvees. The 2008 Chardonnays, while very good, are not up to the level of the flawless 2007s. The 2008 Pinot Noirs performed well, although they are slightly lower-keyed wines without the structure and density of the 2007s. Paul Hobbs produces Syrah from the Kick Ranch Vineyard, which is in the so-called Petaluma Wind Gap (lots of wind and a cool coastal temperature). Wine Advocate #187, Feb 2010

(93-95 Points) The 2010 Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez Vineyard impresses for its superb elegance and pedigree. Dark fruit, flowers, spices and licorice are some of the notes that come together in the glass. The 2010 expresses plenty of the size and volume that are typical of this site, but with more finesse, elegance and delineation than found in the 2009. Mint, licorice and flowers add nuance on the bright, high-toned finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. Wine Advocate #199, Feb 2012

Expressive aromatics are woven throughout in this beautifully delineated, entry-level Cabernet. The final blend includes 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Hobbs uses a touch of American oak for this Crossbarn label. The main vineyards are State Lane and Mast, both in Yountville. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
I tasted a wide range of stunning wines with Paul Hobbs and winemakers Megan Baccitich and Jason Valenti. I will report on the Sonoma Chardonnays and Pinots in Issue 199. In the meantime, readers will find no shortage of fabulous choices among these 2009 and 2010 Cabernets. After tasting the Hobbs Pinots, it is impossible to miss the clear link between those wines and his Cabernets, especially when comparing those wines to the other Cabernets being made by other producers from the same sites. These are some of the most impeccable, polished, Pinot-like Cabernet Sauvignons readers will come across. The wines are fermented with natural yeasts and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Crossbarn is Paul Hobbs’ second label and is included here for ease of reference. Hobbs describes 2010 as a very late harvest that was especially hard on cooler, more marginal regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. There will be no 2010 (or 2009 for that matter) Cabernets from Stagecoach or Hyde. The best fruit from those sites may end up in the 2010 Crossbarn or the Napa Valley bottling, but the selection will be severe. Wine Advocate #198, Dec 2011

(96 Points) The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is deep, seductive and powerful. It shows stunning richness and intensity, with layers of dark red fruit, smoke, licorice and tobacco in a style that is very expressive but not at all heavy. The 2009 is Clone 4. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Wine Advocate #198, Dec 2011

Price: $211Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Sale $185.68Â Â Â Â Â Â Case $2152
(96 Points) The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard flows with the essence of mint, licorice, black cherries and flowers. It is a deep, muscular wine endowed with terrific richness and depth. Crushed rocks, graphite, minerals, smoke and tar are some of the many nuances that emerge on the dark, voluptuous finish. This seamless, pure wine is simply dazzling. The 2009 is the first Las Piedras from Paul Hobbs. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Wine Advocate #198, Dec 2011

(90+ Points)Â The tannins are noticeable in the extracted, concentrated, broodingly backward, inky/purple-colored 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard. This austere, tannic wine has not yet resolved all its issues with tannin, but it is so concentrated that I think everything is there, it will just require patience. Give it 4-5 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 25 years. Wine Advocate #180, Dec 2008

Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard 2008     Â
Price: $181Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Sale $159.28Â Â Â Â Â Â Case $1846
(92+ Points) My least favorite wine from Paul Hobbs, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard, is still an outstanding effort. As usual, the 2008 seems firmer, more tannic and austere than the other wines in this portfolio. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of crushed rocks, loamy soil, tobacco leaf and red and black currants offered in a full-bodied, gritty, tannic, muscular style. Forget this 2008 for 2-4 years and drink it over the following two decades. Wine Advocate #192, Dec 2010

(97 Points) The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard saturates every corner of the palate with layers after layers of rich dark fruit, mocha, spices and licorice. This is a stunning To Kalon endowed with tons of site-specific character and nuance. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Wine Advocate #198, Dec 2011

(93 Points) The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, juicy wine loaded with dark fruit, mocha, spices and new leather. This rich, expansive Cabernet boasts tons of class and sheer personality. Mint, licorice and spices add complexity as the dark fruit fleshes out on the finish. This is a fabulous wine for the money. The Cabernet is made from To Kalon, Dr. Crane, Las Piedras, Stagecoach and Hyde, and includes a dollop of Petit Verdot from Stagecoach. It is a fabulous effort from Paul Hobbs. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021. Wine Advocate #198, Dec 2011
