“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy wine, and that’s kind of the same thing.” – Anonymous

This is our second annual cru Beaujolais tasting and since our resident expert on the subject of Gamay is Tomas Calderon I suggested that he put together the line-up of wines and the promotion for the event.  I have not met a more passionate wine professional on this subject so I know you will be impressed with the wines on the table tonight.  If you can’t make it we have included all the Beaujolais in the store on this offering.

“When I first encountered the region of Beaujolais, it was with the infamous style of Nouveau. I instantly became hooked. Light, chilled and juicy wine that could pair with my Thanksgiving feast? Uhh, YES. As time went by, I learned of the crus of Beaujolais and how distinct they were from each other. Moulin-a-vent and Morgon were the full-bodied styles, Saint Amour was soft and feminine, while Fleurie (one of my favorites) was floral and filled with aromas of dark fruit and kirsch. Every cru had its own purpose for the wine drinking people of the world.

Thanks to my late Mentor, Chip Cassidy, I was introduced to a grape I would love for the rest of my life. Thanks to Andrew I was able to go on an all-out rampage to try and find the best producers in the region. If you have made your way to the new digs at Wine Watch, you may already know how much of an advocate I am of the wines from Beaujolais. It is not uncommon for me to go on tangents about how versatile the Gamay grape is. I mean it does so well in no matter where it is grown. Whether it be Beaujolais, Jura, Cote Roannaise (the Loire), Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, California, Oregon and even the Finger Lakes you know it will stand true to its name. Lately, the wines have been getting much praise, thanks to the likes of The Gang of Four (Jean-Paul Thevenet, Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre and Guy Breton). These four winemakers came together in 1980 and decided that they were going to show the best of Beaujolais through the respective Crus. It is also with them that the “natural wine” movement came to grow exponentially with all the wine nerds out there. You will find many “natural wine” producers out there that make wine that is not for the masses, and not all of it will be good. Nevertheless, if you want to know the true spirit of wine made “naturally” then buy wines from the four names I mentioned earlier and their next of kin. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.” -TC
