A bottle of wine begs to be shared; I have never met a miserly wine lover.

Fadiman, Clifton

We are sharing a lot of Bordeaux this month and when I heard that the export director from the Bordeaux chateau of Henri Martin was coming to town, I found a few older vintages of their top property Chateau Gloria to put on the table to share with Mr. Jules Coulaud.  We opened the 1982 Chateau Gloria a few weeks ago and it was drinking beautifully, this great vintage is drinking at its peak today and we only have a few more bottles of this great wine so I wanted to share one with our “Wine Drinking People” before they are gone.

We have three great properties from the Medoc on the table tonight and a special menu to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $275 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com to make reservations.  Please let us know when you make your reservations if you have any dietary restrictions and chefs Toni and Dani will be happy to accommodate you.

Chateau Chasse Spleen
Located in the heart of the appellation of Moulis en Medoc, Chateau Chasse Spleen extends over 90 hectares of gravely soil. The Chateau's vineyards are planted with three grape varieties: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The wines of Chateau Chasse-Spleen are attractive, round, straight and balanced and the Chateau also produces a second wine, l'Heritage de Chasse-Spleen, which is a reflection of the Chateau's first wine.

(92-94 points) “The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score. (NM)” (4/2017)  Wine Advocate

Chateau Saint Pierre
Founded in the 17th Century, Chateau Saint Pierre was part of the 1855 classification and was deemed  4th Grand Cru Classé.  Shortly after that Saint Pierre was broken up and scattered as a result of several inheritances.  In 1982, through a combination of luck and persistence, Henri Martin managed to re-form the estate as it was known in 1855, the year of the famous classification.  Since then, thanks to the owners’ commitment, Saint-Pierre has become universally known as a perfect representative of the Saint-Julien Grands Crus Classés.

(90 points) "Burly, traditional claret. Great dark color and intense aromas of black cherry and berry with hints of mineral and spice. Full-bodied, with full tannins and a sweet berry aftertaste. Very chewy. Best after 2002." (01/99) An incredible value in aged Bordeaux.  Wine Spectator

(96 points)  “Coming from 50-year-old vines and a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is in the same ballpark as the 2015 yet shows a slightly more elegant, classic feel, which is very much in the style of the vintage. Beautiful notes of crème de cassis, black raspberries, crushed rocks, tobacco, and lead pencil shavings as well as some smoky notes with time in the glass all flow to a deep, full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Julien that has fine tannin, flawless balance and integration, no hard edges, and a great finish. This brilliant wine from winemaker Jean-Louis Triaud will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 25-30 years.” (2/2019)  Jeb Dunnuck

2018 CHATEAU SAINT PIERRE SAINT JULIEN
Price: $89.00                   Your Price: $78.32              Quantity in Stock: 11
(95 points) “Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, the 2018 Saint-Pierre bursts from the glass with a glorious perfume of kirsch, blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries and cedar chest with hints of red roses, pencil shavings and spice box. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with velvety tannins and beautifully knit freshness, supporting the generous black and red berry layers, finishing long and perfumed. It needs a good four years for the oak to marry and the fruit to really hit its stride, then should drink a further 20+ years. (LPB)” (3/2021)  Wine Advocate

Chateau Gloria
Henri Martin’s lifetime achievement was no doubt the creation of Château Gloria.

Row by row of vines, parcel by parcel, he patiently and systematically negotiated with his owner friends in the commune of Saint-Julien to buy these various “cru classé” parcels superbly situated on Günzian gravel, which were to eventually make up the Château Gloria estate.

This was a real feat, as the Saint-Julien vineyards cover 900 hectares and almost all of them belong to the appellation’s 11 “grands crus classes”.

The plan came to fruition in the 1970s, with an estate covering 44 hectares, mostly made up of “cru classé” terroirs, some of them being among the most prestigious. 6 hectares have since been added.

So why isn’t the Château a “cru classé”? The answer is simple: it didn’t exist at the time of the 1855 classification. This Saint-Julien Château nevertheless lives up to its name, alluding to glory and success, but also faith: the faith of a man of our time who managed to “invent” a new “cru” and bring it up to the highest level of recognition.

(91 points)“This wine was a big, rich fruit bomb in its youth, revealing notions of tapenade, olives, and herbs. It has always been delicious, and continues to display glorious levels of fruit, attractive, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture. I mistakenly thought it would be in its grave five or six years ago. Consistently pleasurable and hedonistic, and at the same time gaining complexity, it is fully mature and I don’t think it will evolve any further ... but I said the same thing 10-15 years ago. (90 Points)  "This beautiful Bordeaux fruit bomb offers abundant notes of black currants, herbs, cherries, cedar, and spice box. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied with no hard edges, the 2000 Gloria is a total thrill to consume. Enjoy it over the next decade, perhaps longer."  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 CHATEAU GLORIA ST. JULIEN
Price: $96.00                   Your Price: $84.48
(93 Points)  Well-steeped plum, fig and boysenberry fruit is richly layered, supported by embedded brambly grip and backed by waves of ganache and sweet tobacco on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2038.   Wine Spectator

2016 CHATEAU GLORIA ST JULIEN

(94 Points) This has a slightly chunky feel now, with bramble and tar notes jutting out a bit, but the core is saturated with cassis and blackberry fruit flavors and there's fun energy throughout. Offers a lovely tug of sweet tobacco detail on the finish too. Just let this settle in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038.  Wine Spectator

2018 CHATEAU GLORIA ST. JULIEN
Price: $82.50                   Your Price: $72.60
(92 Points) The 2018 Gloria is a strong effort in this lush, fruit-driven Bordeaux vintage. Offering up aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an ample core of fruit, ripe acids and sweet tannins. Purists will gravitate to the 2019 and 2016, but this demonstrative, hedonistic 2018 can already be approached with pleasure.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
