Wednesday night we have an exciting event with a new producer from the red hot Maremma region of the Tuscan coast.  Monteverro Winery is new to me but the wines are getting big scores from the critics and with winemaker Jean Hoefliger in town to explain these exciting new wines, I thought it deserved our immediate attention.

With Monteverro’s first release of the 2008 vintage, it burst onto the Tuscan scene and immediately made its place alongside the great Super Tuscans of Maremma like Sassicaia and Masseto.  The 2008 Monteverro scored 95-WE, 93-WA and was a stunning entry made from vines only 4 years old!

2009 is now available.  The vines are older, the wine is only getting better.  The early reviews are fantastic—95 from James Suckling (formerly of Wine Spectator), 96 from Rainer Schafer (Euro wine magazine “Fine”).  The sky is the limit for this winery.

We have Jean Hoefliger winemaker from Monteverro in town for this even, he is a protégé of Michele Rolland, who is also consulting for Monteverro.  Jean is also consulting winemaker for Alpha Omega in Napa, where Michele is also on the payroll.

Wine Watch Catering’s Toni Lampasone will be making a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines.  This event is limited to 15 tasters and the fee for this event is $45 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

Monteverro Chardonnay 2009

Our Chardonnay is a top quality wine with great character traits. The wine originates from a mini-plot on the best slope and is produced only in very small amounts. The absolute attention to detail and meticulous screening and selection make this Chardonnay extremely distinctive. Proximity to the sea and the cool nights lend this wine its uniqueness and a suggestion of finesse worthy of a Burgundy.

Monteverro Tinata 2009

Tinata is an outstanding Cuvée, assembled from Syrah and Grenache, a wine as worthy as our Monteverro. It is vinified from one specific location on the best hillside slopes and its appeal lies in its high complexity, elegant structure and beguiling richness of aroma, as well as with enormous depth, balance and authentic characteristics, reminiscent of the great sites of the Rhone. Thanks to careful screening and selection during hand-harvesting and the special attention dedicated to this wine, Tinata is a wine that is particularly special to us.

Terra di Monteverro benefits from the same care and attention to detail as our “Premier Cru“. It is a Cuvée assembled from the same grape varieties as Monteverro and boasts the same characteristics. It possesses all the qualities of our magnificent terroir and has the distinction of being engagingly approachable, with an impressive structure, harmony and intensity.

Monteverro 2009 (Bordeaux blend)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Monteverro is the winery’s flagship wine — its version of Tuscany’s “Premier Grand Cru.” This wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and barrels and is aged in French oak barriques. The complex bouquet is defined by dark fruit aromas with hints of herbs and cigar box.
