Louis Jadot 2010 Barrel Tasting at Wine Watch

Great wines taste like they come from somewhere. Lesser wines taste interchangeable; they could come from anywhere. You can't fake somewhereness. You can't manufacture it ... but when you taste a wine that has it, you know.

MATT KRAMER, Making Sense of Wine

Burgundy is the ultimate expression of somewhereness in the world of wine and that is why we are constantly studying these wines to learn more about the effects of terroir on wine.

Friday, May 18th
Louis Jadot 2010 Barrel Tasting with Special Guest
Philippe Marchal, Kobrand’s French Portfolio Manager
7pm

The 2010 vintage is turning out to be another very highly regarded vintage all over France and you know what that means for areas like Burgundy? It will be a very hard to acquire the top wines from this vintage expect higher prices because there is less wine to go around.  We always try to get in on the ground floor in a vintage like 2010 to get more than our fair share of the wines that people are looking for at the right prices.  All of these 2010's are at 20% off in this pre-sell and unlike in Bordeaux, you don’t have to pay for the wines until they arrive!  Simply let us know what wines you would like and we will order them and when they arrive we will call you for payment at that time.

One of our friends from Kobrand was in a few months ago and I inquired, "What happened to the outstanding barrel tasting that Louis Jadot used to put on ever year here in South Florida?"  To me this was one of the most educational wine tastings that I attended all year and one that I looked forward to every year.

Well- Ask and you shall receive! The Louis Jadot Barrel Tasting will be here and with over 10 wines from the KILLER 2010 vintage.  There are still a few 2009's in the market so we have included a bonus round of 5 wines from the outstanding 2009 vintage as well.

Philippe Marchal, Kobrand’s French Portfolio Manager will be here to tell us about the wines and Wine Watch Catering's Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines.

This tasting will take place in the tasting room at the Wine Watch and will be a pre-poured event there are only 15 seats available. The fee for this tasting is $75 + Tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

2010 Louis Jadot Barrel Samples

Whites

Louis Jadot Pernand Vergelesses Clos de la Croix Pierre
Pre-Sell Price: $29.61

The Clos de la Croix de Pierre is located next to the famous premier cru " En Caradeux ". It is not far from the very typical village of Pernand.
The soil is calcarous and very stony on the surface. "Croix the pierre" represents a big cross at the entrance of the vineyard. Most of this vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir.

" Clos de la Croix de Pierre " is a very well-balanced wine, very straight with a nice structure. The vine has been planted rather recently.

Louis Jadot Beaune Greves Le Clos Blanc 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $53.86

"Les Grèves" is situated in the North between "Les Toussaints", "Les Bressandes" and "Les Theurons". In French, "Grèves" means sandy, small stones, which describes the soil of these vineyards.

This unusual rare and rather exotic white wine is full, rich and spicy, with broad fruit flavours and exceptional depth offset by notes of almonds, earth and gently toasted oak.

Louis Jadot Meursault Charmes 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $66.61

The soils of Les Charmes, due to their lower position on the slope, are richer and heavier than the thin stony soils of Les Perrieres above it, and yields the most typical Meursault 1er Cru. Though, less racy and elegant than Perrières or Genevrières, Charmes is above all seductive, approachable wine ; round lush and ample in the palate, with slightly less acidity than the former.

Maison Louis Jadot produces a rich full-bodied wine, traditionally vinified in oak to yield a well structured cuvée which balances firmness with ripe fruit flavours. This Meursault Charmes is a quintessential wine with full, ripe fruit flavours, a fat, velvety texture and a bouquet redolent of peaches and apricots.

Louis Jadot Puligny Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $70.86

" La Garenne " climate lies near " Les Folatières ", and " Les Referts " roughly midway between Meursault and Montrachet. Chalky soil of medium density.

This wine is full and generous yet extremely elegant wine, with distinctive peach and almond nuances as well as fruity and oaky aromas both on the nose and on the palate.

Louis Jadot Bâtard-Montrachet
Pre-Sell Price: $240.36

Bâtard Montrachet is located at the point where villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet converge. It borders the Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet vineyard and is right below the Montrachet's one.

It is exposed to the sun from the east, and sits on a terroir composed of chalky soil. It is also the largest of the five Grands Crus.
Bâtard Montrachet is a full bodied wine, rich and powerful. It stuns the drinker with intense flavor of almonds, ripe apple, white flowers, honey and spices. In addition, the length in the mouth is remarkable.

Reds

Louis Jadot Chateau Des Jacques Moulin a Vent
Pre-Sell Price: $27.61

Geological origin and soil composition are quite different from the Côte d'Or. This is why the Beaujolais red wines are only made of Gamay grapes.
The Louis Jadot Moulin à Vent is a full, robust Beaujolais, with a fleshy, almost fat texture and greater longevity than any other Cru of the Beaujolais. The exceptional quality of its structure preserves a fruitiness which becomes mellow with bottle age.

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin a Vent Clos de Rouchegres
Pre-Sell Price: $27.61

Geological origin and soil composition are quite different from the Côte d'Or. This is why the Beaujolais red wines are only made of Gamay grapes.
The soil from the "Clos de Rochegrès" is typically granitic, not very deep and overlying a very hard bedrock. Louis Jadot Moulin à Vent "Clos de Rochegrès" is a special "cuvée" from old vines. It covers 8 hectares.

The Moulin à Vent "Clos de Rochegrès" has a very nice garnet-red colour with crimson tints. It releases very fine aromas of flowers (rose) with a touch of mineral. The wine is generous and tender on the palate thanks to the elegant and long lasting tannins.

Louis Jadot Beaune Clos des Couchereaux 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $36.11

"Les Couchereaux" vineyard is situated on top of the slope, in the middle of the commune. This vineyard has a southern exposure. Soil is made of clay and calcareous. It is well drained and can warm up easily.

Beaune 1er Cru "Couchereaux" has a deep ruby colour. Thanks to its exposure, it develops powerful aromas of matured red fruits. It is a structured wine, with good tannins, rich and able to age.

Louis Jadot Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $65.36

The " Les Rugiens " vineyard consists of two parcels : " Les Rugiens Hauts " and " Les Rugiens Bas ", near the village itself, at the summit of the Pommard slope. The name "Rugiens", a derivative of ‘rouge' (red), describes the reddish color of the soil, a result of its extremely high iron content.
Maison Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru "Rugiens" is a robust, masculine wine. Its vigorous, rich fruit, set in a powerfully built structure, is completed by the distinct earthy notes of its ferrous soils and a lasting finish.

Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques 1er Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $115.36

The " Clos Saint Jacques " vineyard is located at the beginning of the valley called Combe de lavaux. It is very nicely South-East oriented. There are only five owners of this prestigious Clos, which may have deserved the Grand Cru Appellation when the first official classification was decided.

The Gevrey-Chambertin " Clos Saint Jacques " is a fullbodied and complex wine. It shows a broad palet of aromas, both powerful and elegant, with an impressive length in the mouth.

Louis Jadot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Pre-Sell Price: $116.36

" Charmes Chambertin " vineyard is situated on the east facing slope between Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin and Chambertin Grand Cru.
"Charmes" is derived from "Chaume", meaning "subtle" or "thatch" indicating the former presence of a field of grain.
Louis Jadot Charmes Chambertin has a deep color and possesses intense aromatic bouquet reminiscent of blackcurrants and the berries of other little red and black fruits. When the wine has matured, it smells musk and fur, and often liquorice.

A bit of history on Louis Jadot:

Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the man whose name it bears,  Louis Henry Denis Jadot - a young man of Belgian ancestry whose family had settled in Beaune near the turn of the century.  At a young age Louis Henry Jadot developed a deep interest in the wines of Burgundy; and by 1826, his father acquired a parcel in the "Clos des Ursules" vineyard in Beaune, which upon his death he bequeathed to his brother, Louis's uncle.  Under his uncle's auspices, the young Jadot greatly broadened his experience - first in the cellars in the art of evaluating the wines and then in the vineyards in the study of viticulture.  As Louis Henry travelled, he acquired a faithful clientele and in 1859 purchased the respected négociant firm of Lemaire-Fouleux.  He gave the firm his name, restructured its operations, and began to expand its business into the export markets of northern France and Belgium.  Belgium, once a province of the Duchy of Burgundy and historically the preeminent market for its wines, was, as the Jadot family's ancestral home, of particular interest to Louis Henry.  It was there that the Jadot name first began to gain renown.

As Maison Louis Jadot grew, its vineyard holdings expanded through the purchase of parcels in Beaune "Theurons" and "Clos des Couchereaux".  After the death of Louis Henry Jadot, his son, Louis Baptiste Jadot, enthusiastically carried on the work his father had begun.  Louis Baptiste expanded his export markets as well as his clientele in France, reinvesting the profits in the further acquisition of vineyards.  He judiciously made purchases in some of the finest and most famous grand and premier cru vineyards of the Côte d'Or - among them an interest in the coveted Chevalier-Montrachet "Les Demoiselles".  In 1939, Louis Baptiste Jadot died and left control of the firm to his eldest son, Louis Auguste Jadot, who had assisted in the direction of the business under his father since 1931.  Louis Auguste opened and greatly developed the new export market of the United States; he also expanded Jadot's activities in Great Britain, Holland, South America, and New Zealand.

In 1954, Andre Gagey joined Maison Louis Jadot as assistant to Louis Auguste Jadot, and this proved to be an important event in the fortunes of the Jadot firm.  The extremely capable and affable Gagey was appointed interim managing director of the firm in 1962 when Louis Auguste Jadot died, survived by his wife and a seventeen-year-old son, Louis-Alain.  Tragically, Louis-Alain was killed in a car crash at the age of 23 in 1968.  Mademoiselle Jadot then gave Gagey full responsibility for the operations of her firm, which was without heirs to run it.  Gagey placed the policy of maintaining highest quality above all others; and the impeccable reputation for honesty Maison Louis Jadot enjoys today is the reward of that perseverance.  Gagey recently retired and turned the direction of the firm over to his very competent son, Pierre-Henry Gagey.

Maison Louis Jadot's headquarters is located in the heart of Beaune.  The most glorious of its three cellars, used for storage of older vintage wines, is situated in the Convent des Jacobins once a convent of the patron Saint Dominique, founder of the Dominican order and built in 1477.  It was acquired by the Tourliere family in 1802 and has been used by Maison Louis Jadot since 1954.  In contrast, the most recent cellar, on the outskirts of Beaune, doubled production and storage capacity as of mid 1986 and is perhaps the most technologically advanced facility in France.  All white wines are fermented in cask and aged one year; red wines are aged on average eighteen months.  The type of wood used is very carefully selected - Limousin, which imparts aggressive tannins more appropriate to Bordeaux wines, is too harsh for the delicate Burgundies Jadot produces.  Wines are fined "the old way," with natural proteins - skim milk for white wines, egg whites for red wines.  The wines are then hand-racked at five intervals before bottling to assure perfect clarity and brightness.  The Jadot estate today includes ownership of parcels in the vineyards of Chevalier-Montrachet "Les Demoiselles," Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Pougets, Beaune "Clos des Ursules," Beaune "Theurons", Beaune "Bressandes", Beaune "Boucherottes", Beaune "Clos des Couchereaux, Beaune "Les Chouacheux, and Pernand-Vergelesses "Clos de la Croix de Pierre."  In 1986 Jadot acquired the prestigious Clair-Dau Domaine and in 1987 entered into a contract to produce the wines of the renowned Duc de Magenta.  In 1990 Jadot again expanded its holdings with the purchase of the Domaine Champy in Beaune with its fifteen acres of very valuable vineyards.  In 1994 Jadot purchased another 13.26 acres in prime premier cru vineyards.  Since 1986 Jadot has more than doubled the acreage under its domaine, which together with long term contracts, brings over 160 acres of some of the finest vineyards of the Côte d'Or under Maison Louis Jadot's control.  In February of 1985, the négociant firm of Maison Louis Jadot was purchased by the American-owned Kobrand Corporation, the sole United States importer of Jadot Burgundies since 1945.  This prompted outcries in Burgundy, where it was felt that American ownership would signal the end of an era and that Maison Louis Jadot would never again be the same.  A dozen years hence the French now realize that Kobrand has brought nothing but brilliance and capital to this prestigious firm and that Jadot is producing the best wines in the firm's history.  Since 1970 the winemaker at Maison Louis Jadot has been Jacques Lardière, who is widely regarded as one of the best in Burgundy.  In 1995 he was cited by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate as one of the top thirteen "Wine Personalities of 1995."  Parker said: "Lardière continues to go from strength to strength producing an enormous range of wines...that are among the finest from Burgundy.  His flexibility and intelligence in handling diverse vintages makes him a winemaker par excellence."  This appears on top of praise previously showered on the firm by Parker in his book titled BURGUNDY.   There Parker rates Maison Jadot between four  and five stars - near the very top of the pyramid of his rating system.  "Most of the red wines from Louis Jadot need 3-4 years in the bottle to round out, but can age for up to 15-20 years, depending on the particular cuvée. The white wines are no less brilliant than the reds."

2009 Vintage Louis Jadot wines still available!!

If you have not stocked up on this incredible vintage, this is your last chance to get some of these wines as they are down to the last few cases at the distributor.

White Wines

Louis Jadot Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru 2009
Price: $413.25 Sale $363.66 Case $4215
2 cases

Louis Jean Baptiste Jadot bought back the vineyard in 1913 from two sisters and decided to name it "Les demoiselles". This vineyard had already belonged to his grand-father who had bought it in 1845.

The subsoil is extremely chalky with a lot of stones, perfectly drained and easy to overheat with south-south-eastern exposition.
Maison Louis Jadot produces limited quantities of this grand cru, which in many vintages equals or surpasses Le Montrachet in concentration and complexity. Its bright, golden colour and penetrating fragrance of toast and honey predict the rich, mellow fruit flavours, velvety elegance and intense finish of this wine of exceptional grace and breed.

Red Wines

Louis Jadot Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2009
Price: $155 Sale $136.40 Case $1581
1 case

" Charmes Chambertin " vineyard is situated on the east facing slope between Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin and Chambertin Grand Cru.
"Charmes" is derived from "Chaume", meaning "subtle" or "thatch" indicating the former presence of a field of grain.
Louis Jadot Charmes Chambertin has a deep color and possesses intense aromatic bouquet reminiscent of blackcurrants and the berries of other little red and black fruits. When the wine has matured, it smells musk and fur, and often liquorice.

Louis Jadot Bonne Mares Grand Cru 2009
Price: $185 Sale $163 Case $1887
1 case
