"...Once upon a time, I drank a little wine,  was as happy as could be..."

Get Down by Gilbert O'Sullivan

01032014-Bordeaux-Tasting-at-Wine-Watch.jpg

That's why we are so happy here at the Wine Watch, we're always drinking wine!! And we are starting out the New Year with one of our favorite subjects Bordeaux.

The most expensive wines in the world come from this wine growing region located in the Southwest of France.

Some of the cheapest wines in France come from Bordeaux as well and the wines are not as far apart as you would think in terms of the proximity from Pauillac to Bordeaux Superior!

You always want to look at the best real estate in town that is close by to the real expensive stuff as you get to enjoy the view at a fraction of the cost.  The same can be said about the appellations of Bordeaux like Medoc, Lussac St. Emilion, Premier Cotes de Blaye and other lesser known regions that are right next to the better known areas like Pauillac, Pomerol and Pauillac which you will pay big money for.

Join us as we explore the last few recent releases from the world's most famous wine region.  With over 300,000 acres of vines Bordeaux is one of the largest in size.  In addition to making some of the best red wines which Bordeaux is most famous for, they also make some of the most age worthy whites and arguably the best dessert style wines in the entire world in the Sauternes region.

We will have all three of these types of wines on the table this evening with close to 30 wines available from both the left and right bank.  This will be a serious education as well as a chance to stock up on one of the most cellar worthy wines in the world.

This is a walk around tasting and is limited to 35 tasters, Wine Watch Caterings Toni Lampasone will be serving up a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines and the fee for this event is $45 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

Timberlay Bordeaux Blanc 2012

Price: $15.00       Sale $13.20          Case $153

One of the oldest Chateaus in Bordeaux, originating in 1366, Chateau Timberlay produces estate grown Bordeaux wines with an ecological and terroir driven philosophy. Their offerings combine tradition and authenticity wtih an approach that makes Bordeaux accessible. The Chateau Timberlay estate is farmed under the ecologically friendly guidelines of Terra Vitis. This includes practices such as jachere in which vineyard plots are planted with annual flowers to invigorate and enhance the soil's organic structure and attract good predators. Beehives enhance the practice, helping to pollinate the flowers and encouraging a thriving, diverse ecosystem. Grasses are grown between the vines, eliminating the need for chemical herbicides and stimulating deep rooting and healthy soils.

An elegant, fine and expressive blend of white flowers, peach and lemon.  The attack is soft. The wine is fruity, round and balanced. It is lively with a long, pleasant and very attractive end.

Fougas Maldoror Cote De Bourg 2009

Price: $33.00       Sale $29.04          Case $337

(90 points) I thought this was a sleeper of the vintage from barrel, and it is even better than I thought from bottle. Loads of black currant fruit intermixed with dusty, loamy soil notes and some subtle smoke jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored, concentrated, full-bodied wine, which has no hard edges. The texture is beguiling and the wine long and pure. This is definitely a wine to buy by the case, as it probably has 5-7 years of life ahead of it. Wine Advocate #199 Feb 2012

Cote Baleau St. Emilion 2010

Price: $39.00       Sale $34.32          Case $398

(91 Points) The wine displays lots of rich berry fruit, some licorice, cedar, underbrush, and incense. It is medium to full-bodied, up-front and forward, and quite drinkable despite the fact that it is less than three years of age. It should drink well for 12-15 years.

One of the strongest efforts from proprietor Sophie Fourcade in a number of years, the 2010 is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon from a 33-acre vineyard that was upgraded in the 2012 new classification of the wines of St.-Emilion.  Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

Marquis De Terme Margaux 2010

Price: $78.00       Sale $68.64          Case $796

Château Marquis de Terme's grand vin for 2010 has a beautiful rich, deep garnet colour with hints of black and crimson.

The nose is elegant and complex with good length, characterized by notes of small black fruit and cherries, underpinned by spicy, roasted aromas, with a hint of vanilla on the finish.  On the palate, the wine is generous and full-bodied, with lots of freshness and silky, dense tannins; notes of pepper, tobacco and spices add complexity to the fruit.  A very fine, well-balanced, powerful wine that will develop over a long period, with well-preserved notes of blackberries.  The subtle length ends with a slightly tart sensation on notes of blackcurrant.  Decant at least two hours before serving during the first five years, or keep in the cellar where this wine will continue to evolve for many more years.

(90 Points) Solid, with a core of raspberry and steeped blackberry fruit inlaid with anise, apple wood and wood spice notes, all backed by a well-integrated graphite edge on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 27,000 cases made. –JM Wine Spectator, Issue: Mar 31, 2013

Echo de Lynch Bages Pauillac 2010

Price: $74.25       Sale $65.34          Case $758

Representing 25 to 40% of the harvest depending on the vintages, “Echo” is chiefly made from the property’s youngest vines. Its final blend often differs from that of Lynch-Bages by a slightly higher proportion of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is characterised by its soft tannins, a light and smooth oakiness, a silky texture in the mouth and a nice complexity. http://www.bcfw.co.uk/system/html/chateau-suduiraut-ec4a7b94.jpg

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 2010

Price: $72.00       Sale $63.36          Case $735

(94-96 Points) The Chateau Suduiraut has a comparatively rich, botrytized bouquet with dried honey, pineapple and a touch of Seville orange marmalade, with exquisite definition and focus. The palate is well-balanced, with a viscous texture and a good level of botrytis, demonstrating fine minerality and tautness. Dried mango, quince and spice all interlace the focused finish, which is long in the mouth. Tasted against its peers, this has a higher level of intensity and focus. A superb follow-up to the sensational 2009.

Graville Lacoste Graves Blanc 2012

Price: $20.00       Sale $17.60          Case $204

The Graville-Lacoste property produces a Graves Blanc, known primarily for its stony soil composition and fresh minerality. This wine and the Bordeaux Blanc of Château Ducasse are very different from others from their appellations: Hervé blends a high proportion of Sémillon (60%) and a splash of Muscadelle (5%) with Sauvignon Blanc (35%), creating a rich, full, aromatic mid-palate to complement the clean finish. These are the perfect go-to whites that pair well with anything from fish to poultry, picnic fare to Indian curries.

http://ipowines.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/XC-NV-Lalande-de-Pomerol.jpg

Belles Graves Lalande de Pomerol 2009

Price: $37.50       Sale $33.00          Case $383

Situated in Lalande de Pomerol, just north of Pomerol, Belles-Graves produces Merlot-dominated wines with a lush, velvety texture and very fine tannins. The vineyards average forty years of age and are planted on slopes that descend to the east, south and west of the estate. Though they sit just across a small river from some of the famous estates of Pomerol, their greatness comes from their own terroir of varied clay and gravel where flint, quartz, and mica offer distinct mineral components to each parcel. Yields are kept low, the maceration is long, and the wines are never filtered. The final blend consists of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The finesse and subtlety that characterize this wine are matched by its complexity and depth. In Bordeaux’s sea of oft-criticized, overly expensive, and even over-rated wines, it is refreshing to find a domaine, a château, whose wine is far from banal and whose price point feels comfortable.

Saint Glinglin St. Emilion Grand Cru 2011

Price: $36.00       Sale $31.68          Case $368

Winery Notes:  We LOVE Saint-Émilion. It is a very special place indeed and we find the asymmetry of the wines produced there to be among the sexiest things going. It’s also a very fancy place and wines can become outrageously expensive and oftentimes outrageously overblown.   These are, thankfully, both symptoms of humanity and not a function of nature. Our goal here is to make classy, heady, perfumed and elegant wines that are a bit more earthbound in both expression and price. We do this via work with Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown on gravel-over-limestone soils vinified in cement tanks but aged in predominantly older French oak. See, the grapes are in love with their surroundings and they already have a lot to say; they just need a place to bloom, not a ton of additional flavor.

Chateau Le Conseiller Bordeaux Superieur 2010

Price: $22.00       Sale $19.36          Case $225

(91 Points) Another wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this essentially generic Bordeaux is dominated by lots of Merlot, given its mocha, espresso, sweet black cherry and plum notes. It has gorgeous texture, terrific purity, and a full-bodied, hedonistic, fleshy appeal. This is a sleeper of the vintage and a great value, best drunk in its first 7-8 years of life.  Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

Domaine Lapalu Patache d'Aux Medoc 2011

Price: $23.00       Sale $20.24          Case $235

The Chevaliers d’Aux (descendants of the Comtes d’Armagnac) were the first owners of this Estate in Bégadan in 1632. Seized as a state property in the Year IV of the French Revolution, this estate was then turned  into a relay for stagecoaches, better known in the Medoc under the name “Patache”.

Classified as a Cru Bourgeois in 1932, this estate has been owned by the Lapalu family in 1964. Powerful and concentrated, the wines of Patache d’Aux present a remarkable ability for ageing. It is always amazing to notice the aromatic freshness and the solid structure of certain vintages after 10 or 15 years.

Chateau Beau-Site St. Estephe 2011

Price: $43.00       Sale $37.84          Case $439

Château Beau Site is a well-established St. Estèphe château that was originally classified as a Cru Bourgeois supérieur in 1932. It was acquired by the Castéja family, who also own Château Batailley, and Château Trotte Vieille, in 1955. Since 1966 Beau Site has been classified as a Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnel.  Château Beau Site is located outside the village of St. Corbian, which is at the northern extreme of the St.Estèphe appellation. There are nearly 100 hectares of vines with a high average age of 35 years. The wine is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It is vinified traditionally and is then matured in oak casks (50% new) for 12-15 months.  Beau Site is a classic St. Estèphe, displaying good levels of ripe black and red fruits, as well as firm and meaty tannins. A traditionalist's claret.

A 30-year aging curve is possible for the 2003 Chateau. Price: $20.75       Your Price: $17.64 Quantity in Stock: 6

From old vines (average age 45) in the very northern part of the Medoc, the final blend of 51% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc hit 14% natural alcohol. The wine displays loads of espresso roast, black chocolate, creme de cassis, forest floor and tobacco leaf in a full-bodied, opulent, and flamboyant style. Dense, rich and deep in fruit, it exhibits the plush, silky tannins that are a signature of Michel Rolland, the overall consultant for all of the Magrez estates. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. (92 Points) Loads of blueberry, black cherry and dusty, loamy soil notes as well as hints of herbs, licorice and incense jump from the glass of this well-endowed, supple wine. Tannins are sweet and the acidity sufficient to give delineation to the wine. Full-bodied and impressively endowed, it should drink well over the next 10-15 years.  The 2010 Barde-Haut is a delicious, seductive style of St.-Emilion made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Proprietress Helene Garcin-Leveque purchased the estate in 2000 and has been pushing quality ever since.  Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

The wine is round, full-bodied and luscious, with 14.7% natural alcohol. Although meant for early consumption, it should easily last up to a decade or more.  Goulee’s 2010 is another sleeper of the vintage from Michel Reybier, the proprietor of Cos d’Estournel.  Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

2010 Chateau Tauzinat L'Hermitage St. Emilion Grand Cru

Price: $30.00       Your Price: $25.50 Quantity in Stock: 8

A good amount of herbs and fresh earth on the nose with red currant and plum fruit, eucalyptus and tobacco spice, nice complexity here.  Firm tannins on the tongue with balanced acidity and a good amount of red berry fruit, this wine is still a bit on the young side but has all the right stuff, just needs a bit of time in the decanter, nice tobacco spice and earthy notes through the finish.  Finish 40+ Very Good +
