"That you like piña coladas and gettin' caught in the rain  And the feel of the ocean and the taste of champagne"  RUPERT HOLMES

Hopefully it doesn't rain next Friday night because it's time for our annual Sparkling wine and Champagne tasting here at the Wine Watch!  Rain or shine well be drinking over 50 different Sparklers this evening!

11152013-Champagne-and-Sparkiling-Wine-Tasting-at-Wine-Watch.jpg

All sparkling wines are not created equal and Champagne along with some of the finer examples of sparkling wines made with this same method established over the last few hundred years in France's northernmost wine region are the only examples of bubbly that you will find on the table tonight.

Champagne is the name of a region and therefore anything inside the boundaries of Champagne can use this name on their label, everything else is just sparkling wine.  The important thing to look for on the label when it comes to sparkling wines outside of the Champagne region is the method of production and if the words, methode champenoise are there were in business, this means that the sparkling wine in the bottle is made with the same standards that are used in the great wines from the Champagne region of France.

The secret to the finest tiny bubbles is that the secondary fermentation that adds the pop to Champagne happens in the bottle that you are serving it out of.  This is a very expensive and labor intensive method, most of the entry level sparklings made with this method spend 3 years aging before they get to the retail shelves.  The top level wines aka "Tete de Cuvee" sparkling wines can see 8-10 years or more in the cellar before release, the current release for most of these top level sparklers like Louis Roederer's Cristal  are 2005 vintage or older.

This is our 4th annual Champagne and Sparkling wine tasting at Progresso Plaza and this event has become one of the most popular that we do all year. There will be over 50 Champagnes and Methode Champenoise sparkling wines available to taste this evening and Wine Watch Catering's Toni Lampasone will be here serving up a few tasty treats to accompany the bubbles.

We will have stations set up both inside the store and outside in the courtyard to accommodate a maximum of 75 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $45 + tax. Can you think of a better way to start the week-end? For reservations call 954-523-9463.

On the palate, the ripe, full berry flavors are vibrant yet refined, delicately balanced by a fresh acidity which carries into a crisp, refreshing finish of persistent length.

Taittinger Millesime Brut Champagne NV

Price: $82.50 Sale $72.60 Case $842

Taittinger Brut Millésimé is produced from selected Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown in vineyards in several of the finest microclimates of the Champagne region. It is produced only in vintage years when the harvest yields fruit of excellence equal to Taittinger’s rigorous standards of quality. The Chardonnay grapes are harvested from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs and the Pinot Noir comes from the Grands Crus of Montagne de Reims and the edge of Vallée de la Marne. Following harvest, the grapes are pressed immediately in press houses located among the vineyards, yielding a first pressing which is the only juice used for this wine. At the winery, fermentation takes place under temperature-controlled conditions. Blending occurs after the primary fermentation, and thereafter the final cuvée undergoes the secondary fermentation in the bottle in Taittinger’s cool cellars. Aged for five years on the lees, the wine acquires complexity and the fine, pinpoint bubbles characteristic of its sparkle.

Taittinger Comtes Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne 2004

Price: $168.00 Sale $147.84 Case $1714

(96 points) It's fascinating to taste the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne after the 2002, something I have been able to do on a few occasions. The 2004 is all about minerality, precision and tension. It doesn't have the sheer richness or power of the 2002, but it makes up for that with its crystalline purity and sheer energy. Bright hints of lemon oil, white flowers and crushed rocks are layered into the pointed, vibrant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (11/ 2012)

A particular blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. PRECISE: a judicious selection of approximately 60 crus. A nose that is both complex and delicious.

Domaine Carneros Le Reve Brut Napa 2005

Price: $97.50 Sale $85.80 Case $995

Le Rêve, which translates to “the dream” in French, is a luxury Blanc de Blancs cuvee originally inspired by Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne.  Blanc de Blancs means "white of whites" or white wine made from white grapes.

Eileen Crane and Claude Taittinger believe that the finest sparkling wine in the world is Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay grapes.  These wines have greater finesse and ageability and Le Rêve is no exception.   The Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs is generally 100% Chardonnay (with a  small percent of Pinot Blanc in some years).  Aged a full 6 years prior to release, Le Rêve drinks beautifully upon release and continues to develop for years in the cellar.

Our Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs has repeatedly been rated "The Best Sparkling Wine in America." This current release is a great successor to these wines and exemplifies the best of our estate-grown chardonnay.

Ferrari Brut Spumante

Price: $22.50 Sale $19.58 case $230

Ferrari Brut is made using the traditional metodo classico. After a hand-harvest in September, the wine undergoes a gentle pressing and first fermentation in tanks. The wine is then bottled and a second fermentation occurs with selected yeasts. The resulting wine is matured at least 24 months on the lees, with a gradual turning of the bottle upside-down (rémuage). Sediment is removed through disgorgement. The final touch is the addition of the “liqueur d’expedition” (a tiny dose of sugar) and selected wines (the recipe for which remains a closely guarded Ferrari secret).
