Bouchard Pere et Fils 2009 Burgundy Tasting at Wine Watch 7PM

When asked whether he ever confused a Bordeaux with a Burgundy in a blind tasting, British wine legend Harry Waugh replied: "Not since lunch."

Speaking of legends, we have a new segment that we will be unveiling in today’s e-mail called "Legendary Wines".   Wine historian, Alfred Rupert Humperdinct will describe one of the legendary wines of our time and I don’t know where we found this guy but after interviewing him for this bit it appears he has tasted/drank every legendary wine that has every been made to this point.  To see this video click the play button above.

Luc Bouchard was in town a few months ago to show off some of his KILLER 2009 vintage wines.    Not that there has been any bad vintages in Burgundy over the last few years but 2008 was not as big of a success for the reds as it was for the whites, 2007 was also a bit light for the reds but the whites are nice and fresh drinking nicely right now and should hold for a bit.  The 2006’s are very forward and seductive with lower acidity leading me to believe that they will  be drinking consistently their entire life, but don't keep these around for too long as they are not getting any better. 

Luc described that the 2009 vintage will need a longer time for terroir to show its face. In 2009 the flowering was spread out it took 2 weeks to harvest because the maturity was not even.  The 2008 vintage is more straight to the terroir to the character of the climates.  You had a long time to harvest in 2009, resulting in a very easy harvest.

Tonight we will taste through a selection of 2009 vintage wines from one of the leading negociants of Burgundy.  David Snyder will be here to guide us through this tasting of barrel samples from this very highly anticipated vintage from Burgundy.  Toni Lampasone  will be making a four course tasting menu to accompany the tasting wines and the fee for this tasting is $75 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

More hours of sunlight gives a lot of maturity better than in 2005 and more minerality.  Lovely bright red cherry fruit with a good hand of fresh flowers and exotic spices and no pumping over very pretty destemmed all the cotes du beaune, lovely complexity on the terroir higher on the hill more freshness.  they have 3 different Montelele, can be a bit rustic smooth tannins through in 2009 Les Duresses cooloer climate SW of Volnay.  Wonderful freshness and still has a bit of thatrustic nature of the climate.  Finish 45+     Excellent          

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune Clos De La Mousse 1er Cru

Nicely balanced wine  old vines 50 years old Very for ward and seductive bouquet of fresh cherry pie and lovely pretty fresh flowers on the nose, with some gravelly mineral notes.  A nice amount of structure here on the tongue with a bit of tartness showing lots of tannins very firm acidity with a long finish needs a bit of time to come together but has all the right stuff.  Finish 45+      Excellent +       

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnots

Clos Du Chenes is higher caillerets is always harvested first of the three Volnay 1er Cru Wonderful raspberry and strawberry fruit very pretty bouquet Taillepeds sharp tones that cut foot, lovely spice and floral notes and also a lot of stone like mineral qualities to the nose.  A lovely silky smooth texture on the tongue with a nice hand of acidity freshness and a host of spice and mineral highlights on the finish very pretty.  Finish 45+            Excellent +

A bit of a roasted character to the black raspberry like fruit a bit reserved right now but still with wonderful intensity and precision.  Wonderful silky texture has that textbook minerality of Beaune Greves gravelly minerality, and a long finish needs time but again has all the pieces.  Finish 45+            Most Excellent

Lovely black cherry fruit with incense spice and light smoky character to the bouquet some floral notes.  Wonderful structure here on the tongue with layers of tannins, spice and a firm underbelly of acidity holding things firmly in place.  Finish 45+ Most Excellent 

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru

A bit higher piece of land in the Grand Cru appellation, black raspberry fruit lots of Asian spice very complex bouquet, 60% new oak they have reduced the amount which will further show the terroir.  Very big and chewy on the palate with elegance and finesse but just needs a bit of time to flesh out lots of spice and showing a bit of wood tannins right now.  Finish 50       Most Excellent +          

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Meursault Les Clous

Same level of Malic after ML fermentation long aging in barrels no racking no stirring of the must to keep freshness maybe not as structured 2009 is like 1992 and 2006 very fresh higher on the hill thinner soils a fair amount of stone, this wine always needs more ripeness so 2009 was a perfect vintage for this parcel.  Lovely pear and fresh green apple fruit with hits of floral and stone like minerality.  Lovely for ward fruit with hints of spice and distinct minerality.  Finish 40+         Very Good +     

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune Clos Saint Laundry 1er Cru

Next to close de Mouche this is already bottled to maintain freshness white flowers and honeysuckle A very pretty wine with lots of floral highlights and Asian pear fruit.  Pretty floral nuance on the tongue a nice perfumed note all the way to the finish, nice concentration and depth of flavors with distinct minerality and a light chalky note to the finish.  Finish 40+            Excellent          

2009 Bouchard Pere & Fils Meursault Genevrieres 1er Cru

Located SE below the slope this is a very consistent premier cru that thickness of Meursaut but not heavy with good minerality precision, Bouchard has two parcels.  Nice spiced notes to the fresh tropical fruit a good hand of fresh earth minerality.  Nice richness on the palate with a good amount of minerality a bit of an oily texture and a long finish with distinct minerality Finish 45+  Most Excellent             

2009 Bouchard Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

300 meters high rather high for this on the SE more powerful on this side of the hill, a note of fresh buttered brioche lemon drop candy like fruit, with notes of flowers and stone like minerality.  Fat and rich on the tongue with layers of ripe fruit and a long powerful finish, this wine needs time but has all the right stuff.  Finish 45+            Most Excellent
