1995 Vintage Burgundy tasting at Wine Watch

I always say it’s the wine that brings people to Wine Watch and that’s all we sell here so I know it’s true. 

The Wine Watch Wine Bar is only open Thursday night this week and we only have 8 tables.  We only take one reservation per table and then its first come first serve after that and the kitchen is open till 11pm for dinner service.  Thursday nights menu and selection of wines by the glass are all listed on the Wine Watch Wine Events section off the home page of www.winewatch.com.   If you want to reserve a menu item we can take your request along with your reservation as everything at the Wine Bar is made in house and we usually run out of several menu items by the end of the weekend and since tomorrow is the only night were open this week the end of the weekend is tomorrow night.   

Join us Friday night September 28th as we experience 8 wines from the 1995 vintage, five are Grand Cru red Burgundy, we have one ringer from Oregon, one Premier Cru Meursault white from Comte Lafon and the 1995 vintage of Dom Perignon Rose Champagne.  Chef Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines and there are only 12 seats available for this tasting; the fee is $350 per person + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.  Please let us know when you make your reservation if you have any food allergies or preferences and we are happy to accommodate you.

1995 Dom Perignon Rose Brut Champagne

(95 points) The Dom Perignon Rose often does not perform well until around ten years of age, and the 1995 is revealing a bold, medium pink salmon color followed by broad berry notes intermixed with a smoky/earthy character. Rich, full-bodied, backward, and tannic, it should hit its peak in 2-3 years, and last for a decade thereafter. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drinking exquisitely. I recently had the 1969 and 1970 Dom Perignons (from magnum), and both were drinking brilliantly. It makes one realize just how long-lived these wines can be. (97 points) Wonderful Meursault, as caressing and silky as they get. Refined yet extremely flavorful, silky but also vibrant, with deft use of toasted oak to give it a smoky, grilled character atop the pear, bread dough, butter and tropical flavors. 1995 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux Grand Cru

(91 points) Dujac's light-colored wines are a testament to how much punch a deceptively shallow-looking Pinot Noir can deliver. The medium ruby-colored Echezeaux displays sweet, plummy fruits in the nose and an extremely refined, silky-textured, violet and cherry-filled, beautifully intense flavor profile. Elegant, this delicate gem should be at its best between 2004-2012. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. (92 points) Domaine Dujac's finest wine in 1995 is the Clos De La Roche. It possesses powerful aromas of sweet black fruits. In the mouth, the wine explodes with dark berries, rocks, iron, and roasted spice, all embedded in this chewy, velvety-textured, medium-bodied wine. Its enthralling flavor profile offers layers of rich black pepper-laced blueberries and blackberries that are intensely spiced with cinnamon, juniper berries, and hints of eucalyptus. 1995 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes  Grand Cru

(93-96 points) One of the greatest wines of the vintage, Vogue's Musigny Vieilles Vignes, reminded me of Chateau Margaux at its best: an iron fist in a velvet glove. How anything can be this massive, powerful, and robust and yet be strikingly elegant and refined. Possessing a dark ruby color and an amazingly spicy, floral (roses) and black fruit-filled nose, this stupendous Burgundy has a thick, almost viscous, velvety texture, with copious quantities of fat, chewy, red berries. Surprisingly, the fruit almost tastes stewed yet is perfectly and clearly delineated. Complex, intensely deep and buttressed with huge but ripe tannins, this wine should be at its plateau of maturity between 2006 and 2016. Bravo! (PR) (6/1997)  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

1995 Domaine Chezeaux Griotte Chambertin Grand Cru

Domaine des Chezeaux is the largest owner of Griotte-Chambertin. They own two sections in total 1.57 ha equivalent to 60% of this small but lovely Grand Cru.  The two sections are currently leased to Domaine Ponsot and Domaine Rene Leclerc, who has entered into a metayage agreement where Domaine des Chezeaux get a part of the finished wine to sell under the Domaine des Chezeaux label.
