Or they simply can’t afford the good stuff…and you don’t have to be a billionaire to drink well at the Wine Watch we have great wines at every price point.
We have conducted several studies on vintage Bordeaux already this year, and I thought it would be a good follow-up to show some vintage California Bordeaux blends. We just received a bunch of older California wines from the 1980’s and 1990’s so I thought it would be fun to see how these wines are showing right now. Some enophiles may not hold the wines of California in as high regard as those from Bordeaux but I can tell you from first hand tasting experiences the top wines from California can age just as well as Bordeaux.
Tonight we have some of the top names from both Napa and Sonoma on the table as well as a few lesser known wines and some that no longer even exist. We have a great selection of wines from the 1990’s and older from California in the store right now so I have included all of them on this offering on SALE!!

The oldest wine we have in the store from Alexander Valley and in perfect condition this wine was just acquired from a private collection, and we recently showed it at the wine bar. It has a beautiful bouquet of dried herbs, currant and plum fruit still present with cigar box spice and some fresh earth showing, lovely evolution here and still quite lively. Silky smooth tannins on the tongue with a good amount of evolution but still has nice fruit and a long layered finish, an excellent example of a fully mature Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines from Clos du Bois from the 1990’s were excellent in quality and we just opened up a bottle of the 1998 Merlot at the wine bar the other day it was shockingly good and was released at $8.99 a bottle! The last bottle of Marlstone we opened up at an event was a ringer and was one of the wines of the night! Many winemakers will tell you that 1991 is the best vintage from the decade of the 1990’s and these bottles are in perfect condition!

(93 points) "The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 22 months in oak barrels, 76% new, 57% French and 43% American. Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the nose slowly unfurls to reveal baked blackcurrants, stewed plums and dried mulberries with touches of dried leaves, pencil lead, cigar box and beef drippings. Medium-bodied with an alcohol of 13.6% and a pH of 3.9 (suggesting relatively low acidity), the tannins are ripe, firm and velvety textured, framing tons of black fruit preserves flavors and savory nuances, finishing on a lingering menthol note. Still packing plenty of fruit, while this is drinking beautifully now there is no rush to drink. (LPB) (5/2019) Wine Advocate
