That is the beautiful thing about life the twists and turns that happen along the way. If you told me 35 years ago that I would be drinking wine for a living I would have only hoped that could have been a possibility.
We love to support small family-owned wineries and when I met Mike and Matt Reynvaan at the auction of Washington State wines a few years ago I was blown away by their wines. These are the closest thing to Cayuse that I had tasted from Walla Walla and somewhat more reminiscent of the Northern Rhone, so I was not surprised to hear that Christophe Baron was the winemaker at Reynvaan.
Reynvaan is a small family winery (Mike, Gale, Amanda, Angela and Matt) that produces Rhône-style red and white wines from two vineyard properties in the Walla Walla Valley. The produce wines only from varietals that they love and farm themselves. From their first vintage in 2007, the wines have been remarkable with a consistent complexity, depth of flavor, finish and distinctive terroir. Almost everything they do is by hand, planting each vine in the vineyards, trellising, pruning, dropping fruit and then picking and sorting the berries at harvest.
The “Foothills in the Sun” vineyard is at the base of the Blue Mountains on the Washington/Oregon border. The vineyard is planted with Syrah, Viognier, a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and is one of the highest elevation vineyards in Washington. It sits at 1600 ft. with a gradual western and southwestern exposure. Temperatures can be in the 90’s and drop almost forty degrees at night which helps to retain natural acidity and freshness in the wines. The soils consist of deep silty loam, with small amounts of clay, iron and pockets of rocks.
These wines are nearly impossible to find outside of Washington and Oregon and if you try to buy them direct from the winery you have to get on the waiting list to be put on the mailing list! We just received a stash of 2016 and 2017 vintage wines from this tiny producer and we plan on drinking as many bottles as we can before they are gone!!

(94+ points) Co-fermented with 5% Marsanne and aged 18 months in 35% new oak, the Syrah-dominated 2017 The Contender is another ruby/purple-hued effort from this estate that offers a complex bouquet of black raspberries, smoked game, spring flowers, and hints of violets. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and ethereal on the palate, it shines for its complexity and nuances just as much as its richness and length. From Walla Walla Christophe Baron is consulting winemaker, Cayuse fame, big rocks here in the vineyard. A more earthy and savory style, dark earth and that rocky terroir showing through the dark plum and a barnyard, animal, leathery notes. Lots of fresh earth showing through on the palate also very herbal with dark earth and animal notes to the dark plum and blackberry fruit. A very distinct wine with more and more nuance coming out as the wine opens pretty floral notes coming out at the end but very complex and layered with excellent freshness and a long finish, smoke and pepper spice. (95 Points) The dense ruby/plum-hued 2017 Foothills Reserve checks in as all Syrah and comes from a vineyard located around the estate. Aged 11 months in 25% new French oak, it offers Cote Brune-like notes of blackcurrants, graphite, ground pepper, and cured meats. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Syrah that has beautiful fruit, bright, juicy acidity, fine tannins, and solid length on the finish. It's a beautiful, elegant, and oh, so classic Syrah that needs 3-4 years of bottle age yet will evolve for at least a decade. Jeb Dunnuck

(94 Points) Incorporating a whopping 10% Viognier, the 2017 In The Hills comes from the Foothills in the Sun Vineyard (the same vineyard as the Foothills Reserve) and was aged 11 months in 25% new oak. It offers a more rounded, opulent, softer style (no doubt due to the high Viognier) as well as lots of meaty dark fruits, toasted spice, leather, and chocolate aromas and flavors. (95 Points) From a vineyard located near the estate and a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier that saw 25% stems, the deep purple-colored 2016 Syrah Estate In The Hills has a Côte Rôtie-like perfume of red and black raspberries, spring flowers, and smoky, meaty notes. The Syrah/Viognier co-ferment yielded a nose of raspberry jam, black pepper, smoked duck, citrus, apricots and white flowers. The wine’s bright, juicy, lively acidity, integrated tannins and silky texture, makes this spicy, savory, long lasting wine one of the most characterful of Syrahs in the new world. 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier aged 12 months in French oak, 25% new.
