PETER MICHAEL WINE TASTING FEATURING A VERTICAL OF AU PARADIS CABERNET SAUVIGNON BACK TO THE 2012 VINTAGE Thursday, April 25, 2024 - 07:30 PM and all the Peter Michael in the store on SALE!!

What is better than to sit at the end of a day and drink wine with friends, or substitute for friends.

-James Joyce

I have not needed any substitutes this year as almost every tasting we have hosted has been better than the last! I just received an incredible collection of older vintage Peter Michael wines so I figured it is time to do some scientific work with one of California’s top wineries. These wines still sells at a relative value based on all the 100 point scores these wines have received in both the red and white category. Which is unique as Chardonnay that scores those last two points are unicorns!

If you can’t make the tasting, we have the entire stock of Peter Michael wines in the store on this offering so you can enjoy a Peter Michael experience at home with your “Wine Drinking People” or I’m not opposed to drinking alone especially great wines like this and make sure you save some for the next day… nothing better than Peter Michael leftovers!!

Join us as we experience 13 different wines from Peter Michael Winery including the (100 Point) 2017 “Point Rouge” Chardonnay and the 2012 Au Paradis which was the #1 wine in the Wine Spectator’s top 100 a few years back.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $350 + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about Peter Michael Winery:

In 1982, after an extensive, seven-year search for California property to serve as both family retreat and vineyard, Sir Peter Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. For the entrepreneurial founder of Quantel and frequent visitor to Northern California, it was love at first sight.

In 1983, with the help of his wife, Lady Michael, they planted red Bordeaux varietals in the volcanic soils at the site. Four years later they hired Helen Turley to make their first wine, the 1987 Mon Plaisir Chardonnay, produced from fruit grown at the nearby Gauer Estate (now Alexander Mountain Estate) in the Alexander Valley. The wine was followed a year later by their first Cuvée Red Bordeaux Indigène Chardonnay, a barrel selection of wine fermented with indigenous yeast.

Over the years the family expanded their plantings of red Bordeaux varietals on the lower, warmer sites and Chardonnay on the higher, cooler portions of the estate. To take full advantage of their unique conditions, each block was delineated and developed based upon the intricate puzzle of terroir. Soils, microclimates, topography and exposures were all considered in the selection of varieties, rootstocks, row orientation, vine spacing and drainage. In addition to the vines, the family also ensured the long-term natural balance of the estate by restoring native habitats and extensively reforesting with native species trees.

In 1998, the family purchased the 400-acre Seaview property located on the true Sonoma Coast. This amazing site possesses the best attributes of both coastal and mountain sites. While the climate is quite cool throughout the growing season, its location above the fog line provides enough sunlight to fully ripen the fruit. Seaview was planted to Pinot Noir in 2006 and 2007. In 2009, the winery also purchased a 41-acre parcel on a raised plateau overlooking the east side of Napa’s Oakville appellation with 26 planted acres of red Bordeaux varietals.

Some of the most illustrious names in the industry have served as Peter Michael’s winemaker including: Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Vanessa Wong, Luc Morlet, and current winemaker Nicolas Morlet. Throughout its history, the winery has continued to reflect Sir Peter’s founding credo of “mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, limited production.” In keeping with Sir Peter’s “100 by 100 plan” – 100% family ownership for at least 100 years – there has been a generational passing of the baton at the estate. Over the past few years, son Paul Michael and his wife Emily have assumed increasing responsibility in the strategic direction of the winery.

2022 Peter Michael Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres Midi Knights Valley

Price: $86.25         Your Price: $75.90

90% Sauvignon Blanc | 10% Sémillon

100% naturally fermented using native yeasts in barrel; Barrel aged sur lies 8 months, bi-weekly bâtonnage.

This is our estate grown Sauvignon Blanc blended with a touch of Sémillon. The fruit is grown on our Knights Valley Estate in the Les Pavots vine yard alongside our Bordeaux red varietals at 1,000 to 1,200 feet above sea level. The grapes are sorted by hand, whole cluster pressed and then naturally fermented in barrel. No malolactic fermentation was conducted in order to preserve the fruity and zesty character of the Sauvignon Blanc. The name translates to “The Afternoon,” which according to Sir Peter is a good time to start drinking it.

(93 Points) The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc l'Apres Midi is composed of 90% Sauvignon Blanc (one-third is Musque Clone) and 10% Semillon, grown alongside Les Pavots in Knights Valley. Exuberant scents of passion fruit, gooseberries and lime cordial come bounding out of the glass with suggestions of honeysuckle, wild thyme and wet slate. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavors with a pleasant oiliness to the texture and plenty of freshness, finishing long and savory.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2021 Peter Michael 'La Carriere' Chardonnay Knights Valley, USA

Price: $135.00       Your Price: $118.80                  Quantity in Stock: 25

(97 points) I tasted the 2021 Chardonnay La Carrière as a finished tank sample the day before it was bottled. It comes from vines planted in 1994 on volcanic soils and was matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak. It opens soft and creamy on the nose, gaining in intensity as it blossoms to scents of matchstick, saline, Meyer lemons and wafts of lemongrass. The medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and focused acidity to support its expansive, perfumed fruit, and its classy new oak character is already well integrated. I love this juxtaposition of concentrated flavor and shimmery, energetic acidity. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Barrel Sample: 95-97

(96 points) Those looking for more minerality and precision, yet still with serious richness, should check out the 2019 Chardonnay La Carriere. As with all the Chardonnays here, it's from the Knights Valley estate and has wonderful stone and apple fruits as well honeyed minerality, almond paste, and grilled bread aromas and flavors. One of the more inward, tight, and structured Chardonnay in the vintage, give bottles another year or so and enjoy over the following 7-8. (7/2021) Jeb Dunnuck

(98 Points) "A tank sample, the 2018 Chardonnay la Carriere comes from a block planted to Dijon and Hyde (Old Wente) clone selections. It sashays out of the glass with flamboyant notions of fresh ginger, lemongrass, allspice and orange blossoms over a core of peach preserves, pink grapefruit and apple pie with wafts of baking bread and marzipan. Medium to full-bodied, the texture is simply stunning—so satiny with fantastic tension to counter and layer upon layer of spices and savory flavors, finishing very long and very perfumed. 2,907 cases are due to be made." 2021 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille Sonoma

Price: $157.50       Your Price: $138.60

At the highest elevation on the estate Ma Belle-Fille is an extension of the same slope as La Carrière, sharing its southeastern exposure and lean soils. Situated above the ceiling of the summer morning fog, it receives more sun than lower vineyards. This causes the fruit to mature earlier than the rest of our estate. Ma Belle-Fille also shares La Carrière’s core of lean citrus flavors and vivid minerality, but with layers of baked apple and nectarine rounding out its profile. The name translates to “My Daughter In-Law” in honor of Emily Michael, Paul Michael’s wife and the mother of the youngest generation.

'Belle Côte', French for “Beautiful Slope”, was named by Sir Peter after the famous ski run in Courchevel, France. The oldest of the four Knights Valley Estate Chardonnay vineyards, ‘Belle Côte’ consistently exemplifies the potential of crafting exceptionally high-quality Chardonnay from our mountain vineyards. Planted at 1,700 to 1,800 feet (518 to 549 meters), Belle Côte has a southeastern exposure and a western border of native trees, which shelter the vines from the hot afternoon sun. These unique attributes create a naturally cool microclimate that provides an extended growing period and slow-ripening fruit, resulting in a later picking schedule that often continues into October (two to three weeks longer than most Chardonnay vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties).

2020 Peter Michael Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis Oakville

96% Cabernet Sauvignon | 1%Cabernet Franc| 3% Merlot

Barrel aged 18 months in 100% French oak; unfined, unfiltered

Au Paradis is our estate grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Oakville vineyard that we purchased in 2009. The wine itself is at least 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being Cabernet Franc. The red Aiken series soil of this vineyard site produces a meaty expression of these varietals. The name translates to “in heaven” and recalls a magical moment at a Michael Family campout on a hilltop in our vineyards. They awoke to discover a sea of fog below them and a bright new day above. The youngest grandson, then about six, asked, “Are we in heaven?” Plant ed in the foothills on the east side of the valley on a raised, gently sloping plateau, the Bordeaux varietals develop into a classic style with silky tan nins and deep red fruit. Between 500 and 600 feet, 26 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot look down on the valley and across to the Mayacamas Mountains. The slope and hillside location provide ideal sun exposure during the day and help develop the lush, intense fruit one would expect from such a magnificent property

2019 Peter Michael Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis Oakville

(96 Points) In 2009, Peter Michael purchased the former Showket Vineyard in Oakville, on the hillside below Continuum and above Dalla Valle. That is the source for the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. Matured in 60% new French oak, it's a fairly forward, opulent wine, marked by scents of cigar box, tobacco, cassis, cherries and fine leather. Full-bodied, rich and velvety without being chocolaty or overdone, the lingering finish is—texturally—plush winter-weight flannel pajamas interwoven with complex, faintly herbal threads.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2018 Peter Michael Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis Oakville

Price: $247.00       Your Price: $217.36                  Quantity in Stock: 25

(98 points) Coming from Oakville, the 2018 Au Paradis gives up a deep ruby/purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, green tobacco, lead pencil, sandalwood, and dried flowers. Flawlessly balanced, full-bodied, with silky yet present tannins, it's one of those elegant, seamless wines that surprise you with its richness and depth. It reminds me of a great vintage from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou and is a brilliant, elegant, complex Cabernet that will evolve for two decades or more. (7/2021) Jeb Dunnuck

(99 points) The smaller production 2015 Au Paradis is a more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated cuvée that checks in as 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc. Aged in 18 months in 50% new oak, it has a more masculine, mineral-laced style offering red and black currants, crushed rocks, chocolate, and spice. Deep, rich, concentrated, and in need of 4-6 years of cellaring, this Château Latour-lookalike is an awesome, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon! (6/2018) Jeb Dunnuck

(99 points) The 2016 Au Paradis is borderline perfection in a glass and shows the incredible quality both of this estate and the vintage. Tons of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, savory spice, dried earth, and graphite notes all emerge from this full-bodied, structured, concentrated effort that reminds me of a First Growth Pauillac. With building tannins and incredible purity of fruit, it’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle and keep for three decades. (6/2019) Jeb Dunnuck

(98 points) 2014 saw an accelerated bud-break due to the warm spring temperatures. Continuing warmth with no heat spikes produced grapes with thick skins, resulting in a higher tannic structure in this wine. Perfect for a 45-day dry-aged rib-eye steak grilled on cherry wood, this has aromas of crushed violets layered between dried cherries, juicy plum and dried herbs. It's full of tension and stamina, and is driven by its mouthwatering profile. (ED) (3/2019) Decanter

(94 Points) Blended from sites in both Napa (Oakville) and Sonoma, the 2019 L'Esprit Des Pavots could be considered a killer “second wine,” revealing a nose that is fresh with black plum, vanilla, and crushed purple flowers. The palate is rich, inviting, and deceptively easy-drinking, with juicy fruit and refreshing acidity that pulls through it to encourage you to go back for more. Jeb Dunnuck

(90 points) A blend of 34% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2017 L'Esprit des Pavots comes from 57% Knights Valley AVA and 43% Oakville AVA. Deep garnet-purple, it slips easily out of the glass with forward expressions of warm plums, blackberry pie and mulberries plus hints of fruitcake, Chinese five spice and bay leaves with a touch of unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, rich and opulent, the palate has a pleasant chewiness with generous black fruit preserves layers and a spicy kick to the finish. (LPB) (2/2020) Wine Advocate

(94 Points) From younger vines and what could be considered the entry-level Bordeaux blend of the estate, the 2015 L'Esprit des Pavots is still a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. Blackcurrants, black cherries, tobacco leaf, and cedar wood characteristics, full-bodied richness, seamless, elegant, silky tannin, no hard edges, and a blockbuster finish make for a wine that's better than most top wines.  Jeb Dunnuck

(90 Points) The second wine, culled from barrels not considered at the level required of Les Pavots, is the 2014 Proprietary Red L’Esprit des Pavots, which is a relatively large cuvée of 2,120 cases. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this wine is silky, lush and approachable, with low acidity and notes of black olive tapenade intermixed with graphite, blackberry, cassis and smoke. It is full-bodied, plush and best drunk over the next 10-15 years.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2020 Peter Michael 'Les Pavots' Estate Red Knights Valley

Price: $305.00       Sale Price: $255.00                   Quantity in Stock: 2

(95 Points) The 2020 Les Pavots is made up of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Petite Verdot and includes fruit from some of the oldest vines at Peter Michael, planted in 1989. Unusually, there is no Cabernet Franc in the blend this vintage, as it was affected by the wildfire smoke. Deep ruby-purple in color, it is shy to begin, taking time to reveal pure red plums, chocolate, graphite, green bell pepper and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied palate offers generous, alluringly herbal fruits, a luxurious, silky frame and seamless acidity, finishing long and latent. It develops dramatically in the glass, suggesting it will require a few hours in the decanter to show at its best.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(98 points) The 2019 Les Pavots is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and the remainder Petit Verdot. It has unfolding layers of dark minerals, with graphite, boysenberry liqueur, and fresh leather. The palate is expressive of its mountain fruit, with more gripping structure but no harsh edges. This is a remarkable wine to hold a few years and enjoy over the following two decades. (AF) (8/2022) Jeb Dunnuck

2018 Peter Michael 'Les Pavots' Estate Red, Knights Valley

Price: $247.50       Your Price: $217.80                  Quantity in Stock: 6

(96 Points) Located in Knights Valley, Sonoma, the Les Pavots vineyard is located in the oldest of the estate-owned sites, planted in 1989. It is situated at 1,000-1,400 feet and is quite steep in areas. Composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Les Pavots is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock the intense scents of blackcurrant preserves, ripe black plums and boysenberries with touches of wild sage, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate is densely packed and tightly wound with loads of black fruits, dried herbs and earthy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and energetic.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(95 Points) A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot, the very deep purple-black colored 2016 Les Pavots Proprietary Red Wine sings of crushed blackcurrants, blueberry preserves and blackberry pie with hints of camphor, black soil, truffles, crushed rocks and red roses plus a touch of garrigue. Full, rich and with wonderful finesse in the mouth, it has very finely grained tannins and plenty of vivacity, finishing long and earthy. 3,700 cases produced, to be released in the spring of 2019. Price: $1100.00     Sale Price: $900.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(95 Points) This wine has filled out very nicely. Nearly 3,000 cases were produced of this flowery, tar, camphor, incense, blackberry, black currant, espresso and chocolate-scented beauty. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 22% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this full-bodied, opulent 2003 is just entering its plateau of full maturity. It is better at age ten than it was early in life from cask and post-bottling.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
