Palazzo Wines The Last Vintages from Scott Palazzo calling it quits after 30+ years in Napa

"To make a great wine one needs a madman to grow the vine, a wise man to watch over it, a lucid poet to make the wine, and a lover to drink it." - Salvador Dali, Spanish Painter 1904 – 1989

We have been following Scott Palazzo’s work here since he got started in 2005 and his wine kept getting better and better so we were disappointed to hear that he was calling it quits.

There has been a slowdown in the wine industry and many small producers like Scott that do not own vineyards and have been hustling to make and sell their own wines for a few decades are deciding to retire rather than try to deal with the reality that the younger generation are not drinking alcohol and the wine industry has done a horrible job marketing wine to the kids under 30.  We have not seen a decline like this in our industry since they have been recording statistics on who’s drinking wine.

I have been in the wine industry since 1990 and the situation was similar one to what is going on today, they are pulling up grape vines in the central coast of California, Bordeaux’s Entre Deux Mers and in South Australia as the market has shrunk dramatically at the bottom.

The fine wine market is still strong, so if we can convince the youngsters that if they are going to drink a beverage with alcohol in it wine has more health benefits than any other.  The piece that 60 Minutes did entitle “The French Paradox” in the late 1990’s was what catapulted the wine industry into a renaissance which resulted in a massive boom that lasted until 2020.  Then, there was Covid 19 which also encouraged people to drink more than just on the weekends and there was no dry January for a few years.  If you think you’re going to die the last thing you’re thinking about is going dry.

I don’t think creating another killer virus is the answer but if things get much worse for the wine industry I may have to…(just kidding, I’m a wine merchant not a virologist)

But there is a bright side to the situation we are in right now, there are a lot of GREAT deals out there!!

Check out his white wine, we have this wine going back to the 2010 vintage!  Scott makes one of the most age worthy whites in Napa Valley that is almost 100% Semillon.   This 2017 vintage is his last release and is still amazingly fresh this wine will last 20 years easily!

We have a great deal on his last vintage of Right Bank Proprietary Red and newest wine the Cabernet Sauvignon Blend called Left Bank.   These are the last of the wines that we will have from Scott so enjoy them knowing that there will not be another release of any of the wines on this offering.

As always, Merlot makes up the lion’s share of the blend ... giving the wine its sheer power & strength, silky texture, and beautiful layers of rich cherry & blackberry fruit. The Cabernet Franc adds brightness, acidity and ‘floral notes’ to the wine. While the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure & character ... with hints of dark chocolate, earth, minerality, and cocoa & espresso bean to the finish.

2013 PALAZZO RIGHT BANK PROPRIETARY RED WINE NAPA RESERVE MAGNUM

Price: $202.50                           Your Price: $149.00                         Quantity in Stock: 23

(95 + Points) Given the fact that the 2013 had been in bottle only five weeks when I tasted it, some allowance should be made by readers that it may have been somewhat less expressive, but it certainly strutted its stuff. A blend of 68% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has beautifully fragrant, fresh earth, coffee, chocolate, blackberry and cassis notes, a brawny, vigorous, uplifting mouthfeel, a tightly coiled texture, and moderately intense but sweet tannin. The purity, freshness and vigor are all there, but the wine still resembles a barrel sample, as one might expect. Forget it for another 4-5 years and drink it over the following two decades. 2019 Palazzo Left Bank Red Cuvee Napa ...

2019 Palazzo Left Bank Red Cuvee Napa

Price: $48.75                             Your Price: $43.88                           Quantity in Stock: 32

(91 Points) The 2019 Left Bank Red Cuvée is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% each Cabernet Franc and Merlot, all aged 20 months in 60% new French oak. Gentle herb nuances bump up against cherries and raspberries on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is suave and supple, ending in a wash of soft, powdery tannins. Wine Advocate

2018 Palazzo Cabernet Franc Napa - Wine ...

2018 Palazzo Cabernet Franc Napa

Price: $117.00                           Your Price: $105.30                         Quantity in Stock: 3

(93+ points) My favorite of the Palazzo wines reviewed this year is the 2018 Cabernet Franc Reserve, which comes from Carneros. Vibrant purple in hue, it offers up scents of violets and black cherries, with hints of dark chocolate and caramel. Full-bodied and expansive, silky and long, it adds hints of licorice on the finish.  Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (May 2022)

2016 Palazzo Cabernet Franc Napa MAGNUM

When the “stars align” and everything during the growing season goes just right... and you are diligent in the vineyards, as well as throughout the picking & sorting process of the grapes... with a meticulous eye for detail & quality... then and only then is it possible to make Cabernet Franc at a “World-Class” level! With the delicacy and floral bouquet of violets & cassis, the complexity and balance of just the right amount of fruit & spice, and the opulent texture & mouthfeel of a beautifully bold, yet elegantly balanced Red Table Wine... know as Cabernet Franc!

A bit about Scott Palazzo

Founder Scott Palazzo

It began almost 30 years ago . . . a love affair with the wines produced from the Bordeaux region of France. Particularly, wines from the small, family owned Chateaus that dot the rolling hillsides of the beautiful ‘Right Bank’ countryside. It is from here, that my inspiration came.

Finally, the chance to fulfill a life-long passion and dream of producing a wine of exceptional character and style, that would capture the ‘power and elegance’ of the wines I tasted and enjoyed as a young man living in France. In November 2005 that dream was realized . . . when I released my first vintage of PALAZZO Napa Valley Red Wine!

Like the great wines from the 'Right Bank' villages of St. Emilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux . . . Merlot makes up the lion share of PALAZZO Napa Valley Red Wine . . . giving the wine its sheer power & strength, silky texture and beautiful layers of rich cherry & black currant fruit. The Cabernet Franc adds a floral spiciness, acidity and brightness to the wine, with the Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure and deep dark fruit to the finish.

Our goal at PALAZZO is to make wines of outstanding quality, depth, balance and structure. . . that exhibit both ‘power and elegance’ on the palate. . . and that pair well with a broad range of foods. That will always be the standard! It is my hope, that my wine will bring laughter and enjoyment to people's lives . . . and zest and harmony to everyone's dining tables!
