Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon New Cult Wines Wine Tasting Featuring Scarecrow, Dakota Shy, Brand and more...Friday, August 18th 7:30pm
"Couldn't understand a single word he said but he sure had some mighty fine wine....and I helped him drink his wine"
- 3 Dog Night
There are over 450 wineries in the 30 mile stretch of Napa Valley. It’s hard to know all of the great producers but impossible when you think of all the small labels that buy grapes and make wines from contracted space, if you consider those there are over 4000 different labels that are produced under the Napa Valley moniker.
Most of Napa Valley’s elite “Cult Wines” are in the price range of $500 and up. Screaming Eagle sells for over $3000 a bottle on average with the first vintage 1992 sells for over $20,000! There seems to be no limit for price when it comes to Napa Valley’s top wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world today but Napa Valley makes some of the most sought after wines made with this varietal.
We have been studying Cabernet Sauvignon this month at Wine Watch and to continue our scientific work with this varietal we will showcase what I would call some of the new cult wines from Napa with a few crowd favorites like the Scarecrow 2007 which sells for over $1000 a bottle. We will conduct this tasting blind to see if the 100 Point wine is the crowd favorite without knowing what the money wine is.
The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $425 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com. Please let us know when you make your reservation if you have any allergies and chefs Toni and Dani will be happy to accommodate you.

All the wines from these GREAT small wineries on SALE!!

Corison Winery is a small family farm producing delicious Cabernet Sauvignons that speak of place. Over three decades, Cathy Corison and William Martin have built a special home to celebrate the best of our little corner of the world, benchland in the heart of the Napa Valley. Known for power and elegance, Corison wines are balanced to grace the table and are recognized throughout the world for their longevity and consistency.
In 1987, Cathy Corison began to purchase great Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from prime benchland vineyards between Rutherford and St. Helena, intent on making powerful and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that speaks of place. These well-drained alluvial soils had a long history of producing balanced, age-worthy, world-class wines, reaching back to the late 19th century. In her early years everything was done with smoke and mirrors, using purchased fruit and space in others’ wineries.
In 1995, with the purchase of Kronos Vineyard, a property that had been a farm for over a century, there was finally an estate vineyard and a place to build a winery. In the spring of 1999 we broke ground to build our stately Victorian-style winery barn, designed by Cathy’s husband, William Martin. Our second estate vineyard, Sunbasket, a stone’s throw from the winery, was purchased in 2015 after sourcing it for over 25 years.

Bob Levy, long-time winemaker at Harlan Estate, and his wife, Martha McClellan, who has done incredible consulting work at such top-flight wineries as Sloan and Blankiet, have their own small project whose results to date have been magnificent wines. Although expensive, no one will complain about the quality in the bottle as they are clearly Napa Valley first-growths.” -Robert Parker
Founded in 1999 by husband and wife duo, Bob Levy and Martha McClellan, Levy & McClellan is a collaborative effort that showcases wine of uncompromised quality and expression of their origin. Their portfolio releases among the highest priced red blends in Napa Valley, and each year the prices increase further. Levy & McClellan is entirely allocated, so the wines tend to be extremely difficult to find.

One score and three years ago, I met my wife, who was living abroad in France. She was not yet my wife nor did she know she would be. While at a soiree in the French Alps, and with matters seemingly in hand, I sauntered off to the bar to work my French for a refill of Malibu and fruit juice. It was then that I noticed a Frenchman awfully close to my gal, making her eyes flutter and her beret tipsy.
He must have the greatest one liner in the world, I thought as I yelled “FEU!” (‘fire’ in French). Once the room cleared out, I ask my sweetheart what he could possibly have said to make her fall into his arms. Her answer? "He held my hands and asked if I believed in the Coup de Foudre."
After years of thinking he’d called her a cute cauliflower, I consulted a French friend who defined Coup de Foudre as a lightning strike, something unforgettable-"love at first sight"-be it food, wine or someone incredible.
For the past 30 years, we have had the great fortune and honor to work with wine, savor it, and witness its impact on consumers as they navigate the wonders of wine and the sheer pleasure that it brings. We have watched many people commemorate special times in their lives with wine. A few years ago, we embarked on our path to create a unique wine with elements worthy of a Coup de Foudre.
Now that you know our story, we hope that you will share Coup de Foudre wines with the special people in your lives—and that Coup de Foudre will be part of the stories you are inspired to share with us in the future.
Capture the moment! —John Schwartz

An exceptional vineyard site, meticulous farming and masterful winemaking result in world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dr. Revana provides the guiding philosophy of quality as the winery's paramount goal. He ensures that Thomas Brown and the winery team, have all the necessary resources to craft superior wines.
Wine quality begins in the vineyard. The Revana Estate Vineyard is situated in a prime part of St. Helena where deep, well-drained alluvial soils pair with warm days and cool nights to provide an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. Hands-on vineyard management ensures that the natural potential of each vine is realized and only perfect Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are brought into the winery. Once in the winery, Thomas Brown’s artfully restrained approach to winemaking allows for the pure expression of the Revana Estate Vineyard. Employing natural yeasts, gentle maceration and attention to every detail, Thomas crafts wines of purity, depth, character and elegance.
Over millions of years, through wind and rain events, stones and gravel from the surrounding hillsides have washed down to create the well-drained alluvial soils of the Revana Estate Vineyard.
The Revana Estate vineyard is located in St. Helena, an ideal spot for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This northern part of Napa is a narrow stretch of the valley framed by the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains. Each year, hillside erosion from the surrounding mountains provides a constant supply of gravel and soil resulting in the deep, well-drained soils that make up the Revana Estate.
This section of the upper valley also benefits from more moderate temperatures, a combination of warm days and cool nights, without the foggy mornings found in the lower valley or the extreme heat of Calistoga to the north. The balanced climate provides perfect growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Revana Estate vineyard was planted by their vineyard manager, Jim Barbour in 1998. It is comprised of nine separate blocks totaling nine acres. The vineyard blocks have different soil characteristics and are planted with a carefully selected array of rootstocks matched to each block’s soil type. To preserve the unique qualities of the blocks, they are farmed and vinified separately. A combination of close spacing, deep gravelly soils and exacting farming, guarantees low yields and rich, concentrated grapes.
Dr. Madaiah Revana balances a successful practice as a cardiologist in Houston, Texas with his commitment to Revana Family Vineyard. His desire to take on an additional career making Cabernet Sauvignon is rooted in his love for both wine and the rich tradition and culture of winemaking.
First introduced to fine wine by friends, he quickly became fascinated with Bordeaux’s first growths. That fascination led to the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines of Napa Valley.
Dr. Revana dedicated himself to learning all he could about his new interest. He traveled the wine regions of Europe and the United States, learning along the way, and he became determined to create a vineyard estate from which he could craft his own world-class wines. Revana Family Vineyard was born of that determination.
In 2011, Thomas Brown joined Revana Family Vineyard as consulting winemaker. A native of South Carolina, Thomas followed his interest in wine to the Napa Valley after completing college. His early days in the valley took him through a number of small wineries but his winemaking career began at Turley Wine Cellars where he was the assistant winemaker through 2001.
Best known for the Cabernet Sauvignons that he has crafted for Schrader Cellars, Thomas has also received numerous accolades from the press. In 2010, Food & Wine Magazine named him Winemaker of the Year. Both Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate have bestowed multiple 100 point scores on Cabernets made by Thomas.

(100 points) “The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of those insanely good Napa Cabernet Sauvignons that delivers a huge amount of richness and opulence while somehow managing to stay lively, fresh, and weightless. Beautiful crème de cassis, flowery incense, spice box, chocolate, and flowers all soar from the glass, and this still ruby/purple-hued beauty is full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional, layered texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a mammoth finish. This magical 2007 certainly ranks with the finest Cabernets in the world.“ (8/2021) Jeb Dunnuck
(100 points) “Wow, love the minerals, mint, and spices with dark fruits and currants. Full bodied and balanced, with amazing fruit, mint and eucalyptus notes. Such depth and balance. I have tasted this twice now, and it gets better and better.“ (4/2011) James Suckling
(100 points) “Scarecrow's inky/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a prodigious effort. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Congratulations to all involved! (RP)” (12/2009) Wine Advocate

It began when Italian immigrants John and Emma Salvestrin fell in love with St. Helena while visiting friends in the early 1920s. In 1932 they purchased a portion of the historic Crane Ranch, including the Victorian home of Dr. Crane. With the repeal of prohibition in 1933, they started selling grapes as the wine industry began to grow again. Ed Salvestrin, who grew up on the family vineyard, continued to grow quality grapes through the 60s, 70s and 80s preserving the family legacy for future generations. He still lives on site and frequently tends to his fruit trees (apples, pomegranates, grapefruit, persimmon) when he’s not helping out in the vineyard. In 1987, Rich Salvestrin completed his degree in viticulture from Fresno State University. He returned to the family vineyard to help farm and also to expand the family's grape growing business to include winemaking. 1994 was the inaugural vintage of Salvestrin Cabernet Sauvignon and in 2001 the estate winery was constructed amongst the family vines. Today, the fourth generation Salvestrin girls are growing up on the family vineyard.
The vineyard we farm is more than a business—it is our home. We aim to sustainably grow winegrapes so that the land may be preserved for our daughters and future generations. Our practices, both in the vineyard and winery, focus upon being environmentally and socially responsible.
The vineyard at Salvestrin has been farmed sustainably for over eighty years. Holistic guidelines have been utilized since 2006. Fruit trees planted around the property provide a habitat for beneficial insects. Nutrient composts and cover crops increase the biodiversity of the soil and improve tilth. Soil cultivation in the spring aids in achieving vine balance and decreases the need for irrigation. The vineyard at Salvestrin is certified Napa Green with for both Winery and Vineyard and has fish friendly farming practices.
Environmentally friendly practices are implemented in the winery at Salvestrin as well. From conserving water to limiting overall power usage, the team at Salvestrin is committed to sustainability. Purchasing recycled materials, close monitoring of energy and water use, and limiting waste allow the wine cellar to not only run more environmentally friendly but also more efficiently. The estate winery at Salvestrin is certified Napa Green.
Watching my daughters grow up on the family vineyard that my grandparents started in 1932 is pretty special.

Volker Eisele Family Estate is situated in the Chiles Valley District, a sub-appellation of the Napa Valley American Viticultural Area. Cloaked in frequent Pacific fog, and with elevations of 600-1200 feet, the Chiles Valley District is one of the cooler areas of the Napa Valley resulting in a long growing season. The valley’s perfect cabernet climate enhances the development of wines with subtle flavors, full body, and overall complexity.
The Estate’s sixty acres of vineyard grow at elevations of 900 to 1100 feet on east, west and south facing slopes as well as on the valley floor. Soils vary from clay-loam to shale. After purchase of the vineyard property, the Eisele’s began an extensive redevelopment and restoration of both the vineyard acreage and the riparian corridors. Presently 72% of the vineyard is planted in Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Merlot, 10.5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Semillon and 2% Sauvignon Blanc. Seven different Cabernet clones have been incorporated to provide diversity of flavor.
Since 1974 the Eisele’s have enriched the vineyard soils through use of organic farming practices. No herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers have been used. The vineyard is certified as organic by both the California Certified Organic Farmers and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. It has been set back from the property’s creeks to substantially increase riparian vegetation. Oaks and other native tree species have been planted on the creek banks to prevent erosion. Throughout the property creeks and associated riparian areas have been protected and enhanced.
The four hundred acre estate was originally part of the “Rancho Catacula” land grant, given to Joseph Ballinger Chiles in 1843 by the last Mexican governor of California. The Chiles family later sold a portion of their land to Francis Sievers, a German pioneer. In the 1870’s, Sievers founded Lomita’s Vineyard and Winery on the site. The original winery building, some of the tanks, and the original press still remain on the Estate. The oldest cabernet vines were planted by the Eisele’s in 1976 and continue to yield fruit of superb quality.

In 1974, shortly after their Peace Corp assignment in Colombia, Tom Clark and Laurie Claudon came to the Napa Valley, new baby boy in tow. Immediately caught up in the infectious energy, they were ready to take their place among a small group of visionary grape growers and winemakers. Together, that group of pioneers laid the foundation for the unrivaled status of today’s Napa Valley.
Over the next four years as their family grew. Tom continued to refine his grape growing expertise and Laurie learned along with him. In 1979, Tom founded Clark Vineyard Management and began developing and managing vineyards under his own company.
Then in 1989 pressed by a friend, Tom and Laurie hiked a piece of property on the north east side of Howell Mountain. Though unproven, it was the proverbial love at first sight and ideal for a Cabernet vineyard. Because of Tom’s considerable reputation, the sellers desire to support the purchase and the couple’s willingness to bet on themselves, they leased and developed the property while eventually exercising their option to buy. Working together, the family joked about calling it Sweat Equity, but the vineyard they developed would become Clark-Claudon Vineyards.
Their business was founded in the old tradition of family winemaking where the art begins in the vineyard and ends with a beautiful bottle of wine. The name Clark-Claudon and the logo's meeting of the two feathers represent a joint commitment to the pursuit of their dream and to the preservation of the environment that supports it. Since then, Clark-Claudon Vineyards has received critical acclaim for their Estate Grown Cabernet, Eternity Reserve Estate Cabernet and their Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc.

Celia Welch, consulting winemaker to some of Napa Valley’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon estates, is proud to welcome you to her own endeavor, CORRA.
Grapes from three prime vineyards in three of Napa Valley’s premium growing regions, Oakville, Rutherford and Pritchard Hill, combine to create the powerful yet elegant Corra Cabernet Sauvignon.
Corra, a Celtic deity representing prophecy, symbolizes this small brand’s forward-looking perspective. Showing herself on earth in the form of a crane, Corra takes wing and lifts her shadow to life.
After more than twenty-five years of making wines for other Napa Valley vintners, Celia Welch is excited to share with you the wine she has made for her own brand, Corra.
Celia Welch’s first interaction with grapes was under the huge oak tree in her backyard in Southern Oregon, where her siblings and she plucked grape berries from stems for their father, an avid wine collector and home winemaker. Her parents also included the family on trips through Napa and Sonoma in the early sixties, and, like most visitors, she was entranced with the beauty of the rolling vineyards.
In 1982 with a degree in Enology earned at UC Davis in her back pocket, she set out to take a peek at a few wine regions. Her travels took her to the Pacific Northwest, the East Coast, and to New Zealand. She worked harvest in the Barossa Valley of Australia, and then settled in the Napa Valley to refine her craft.
Celia had reached a fork in her career path in the early nineties, and she chose to focus on independent wine consulting. The wines she has made create a microcosm of Napa Valley. She has made wine from vineyards on Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, and Howell Mountain to those in Carneros, and from benchland vineyards from St. Helena to Napa.
In 2004 came the idea and the challenge of founding Corra. It was not easy to find vineyard sources with top-quality fruit, a winery with a bit of space to spare for barrels, and a strong team of individuals with experience in different aspects of the wine business from grapevines to websites. The results of these efforts have been tremendous; well-received wines and a project that has lead to information- and idea-sharing for everyone involved.
