Edith Wharton

You ought to be opening a GREAT bottle every night!  And as a customer of the Wine Watch you can open a GREAT bottle every night- Hey I’m opening at least two.

There are many ultra expensive wines coming from Napa Valley today but if you look around and find some of the family-owned wineries that have been growing grapes for a few decades these are the true gems of Napa and some of the greatest values like the wines of Wulff Family.

We have a 50% off sale on their Oak Knoll District Pinot Noir which is at its perfect age to drink tonight at 6 years old.  Pinot Noir can list for a decade or more in your cellar, but it needs ½ the time that Cabernet Sauvignon needs to start drinking at its peak.  Check out this little Gem and all the other wines from this great small family-owned vineyard, even at their regular price they are a great value.

WINE WATCH REVIEW:  This winery owns 17 acres on Oak knoll and 4 acres on Atlas Peak.  This Pinot Noir has a pretty nose of ripe cherry pie like fruit with pretty floral notes and a touch of exotic spices.  Bright red berry fruit on the tongue with a silky-smooth velvet like texture, a nice touch of spice on the finish, nice ripeness but also has a good amount of freshness a well-balanced wine with nice length on the finish.  Finish 45+  TASTING DATE 2/21/22  Excellent +

Wulff Vineyards - Lobo Wines

A bit about Wulff Family Vineyard:

Husband and wife team Krys and Randy Wulff have been growing premium grapes in Napa Valley for over 20 years, selling to many well-known wineries such as Lewis Cellars and Mumm. The Wulffs hand select areas in their estate vineyards from which they make their own signature wines under the LOBO label, the Spanish word for “wolf.”

Randy grew up with Krys in California’s Central Valley.  After graduating from the Honors College at the University of Oregon and Hastings College of the Law, he spent more than twenty years as a successful trial lawyer at a firm in the financial district of San Francisco. Now an officially “recovering” attorney, he formed his own firm as a full time “neutral.”

For the last twenty years, he has developed a national reputation as a mediator to help people resolve their legal disputes more cost effectively.  He has settled more than 3000 cases over his career and completed a 2 ½ year stint in New York as the mediator and arbitrator of the World Trade Center property damage claims arising from the tragedy of 9/11.  These claims were four times larger than any other in the history of the insurance industry.  He has received numerous awards and recognition, edited two nationally marketed books, and has taught at countless conferences, conventions and seminars.

After leaving the Central Valley, Krys got her undergraduate degree at University of San Francisco, and a Masters at Mills College in Oakland, California. She successfully balanced a business as an optical industry consultant with the challenges of raising two sons for over 25 years.

She gives a lot of energy to several philanthropic, educational and advocacy organizations.  She was Past President of the Piedmont League of Women Voters, and a sustainer in the East Bay Junior League. She served for ten years on the Board of Directors for EdSource, an independent, non-partisan organization that works to engage Californians on key education challenges with the goal of enhancing learning success.

Krys has been actively involved in the American Association of University Women, an organization empowering women and girls since 1881, advancing equity for women and girls through education and training, economic security and leadership. She served several terms on the National Board of Directors, as the national Membership chair, and on the national public policy committee. At the state level she served as a past California State President.

Victoria is a graduate of the UC Davis enology program and began her winemaking journey at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as a production assistant. She has returned to the Napa Valley after a stint at Jade Valley Winery near Xian, China, consulting with new wineries there as well. Victoria was exposed to classic, Old World winemaking in 2008 when she worked alongside Erick Tourbier at first-growth Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, France. She is one of Napa’s exciting new winemakers. Victoria has produced the Cabernets since 2008 and now crafts all our red wines as well as our rosé. This year marks her 15th vintage for Lobo wines.  Victoria also just happens to be Napa's first black woman winemaker.

Wine Watch Tasting Notes:  This wine is made at Lewis Cellars and Randy had been buying their fruit for his reserve Chardonnay for years.  This is a full-bodied white with notes of crème caramel with lots of ripe tropical fruit with lemon drop candy.  Rich and ripe with a lovely creamy texture with a nice hand of lightly spiced oak and that creme caramel character with good freshness for such a heavy wine.  Finish 40+              Most Excellent

The estate-grown fruit is all hand-harvested, cold soaked on skins and then aged for 18 months in 60% new French Oak primarily from Baron, Taransaud, Seguin Moreau, Saury and Boutes. It is blended with merlot and petit verdot from the same estate vineyard for balance and complexity.

Wine Watch Tasting Notes:  A big bouquet of dark spices, fresh earth and a good amount of Dark current and cassis like fruit a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend, dark coco, with notes of graphite and cedar, good complexity here on the nose, even better on the second day.  A big and chewy wine with lots of everything and a long layered finish, very complex and layered with only 410 cases produced a big but still balanced wine with a long finish.  Finish 50+       Most Excellent
