 Wine, Wine, Wine

     All hail the Grape Divine!

     Wine, Wine, Wine

     Makes everyone feel fine!

You got yours, and I got mine -

     Wine, Wine, Wine, Wine, Wine!

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most popular red wine in the world today and when it comes to immediate gratification wines the Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is hard to beat.  I just returned from the Premier Napa Valley trade auction featuring the 2023 and 2024 vintage wines.

Premier Napa Valley is a trade event and the “who’s who” in the wine industry are usually in attendance bidding on unique small lots of wines that consist of 5, 10 or 20 cases.  The Premier Napa Valley label is consistent on all the wines and all of the juice in the bottle is a special bottling assembled only for this auction.  The hard part is tasting all 180+ lots on the Saturday tasting before the auction and then making it through three and a half hours of the live auction.

This event is a marathon, and it starts officially on Wednesday, but we arrived a day early to attend a 13 vintage vertical tasting of Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon back to the 2006 vintage with winemaker Celia Welch guiding us through various years.  Celia has been at Scarecrow since day one so there is no better person to tell the story of this wine and to comment on the different vintages.  The wines were all amazing and every vintage on the table could have been wine of the night for someone, but my favorite was 2008, the tannins were so silky and smooth, the wine had impeccable balance and freshness without any harshness or oxidative qualities.

The Wednesday, Thursday and Friday events start at 8am in the morning and finish at 10pm at night or later…I did not take off my sunglasses the entire trip as even thought I drink two bottles of wine every day, I usually start at 4pm not 8am.  There were some amazing tastings with almost all the elite wineries from Napa Valley in attendance.  You could almost close your eyes and point to any of the wine from the 2023 and 2024 vintages as they all seemed to be most excellent in quality.   The 2024 vintage seemed to be a bit more forward and seductive even though it was a year younger but the quality is really top level in both of thee years.

Wine Watch bought two lots this year and we like to support our friends but we have a lot of them in Napa Valley so I put the paddle up quite a few times and we were the second to last bid on 5 or 6 lots.  It was a lot of fun and this was Antonio’s first Premier Napa Valley tasting as he is now officially 21 so he can now travel with me to these great wine tasting events.

One of the lots Wine Watch purchased was a white wine from Elizabeth Spencer winery owned by our good friend Jean Charles Boisset.  Sauvignon Blanc is Toni’s favorite wine, so I had to come back home with a white lot and a red lot this year.

I thought one of the best Howell Mountain wines that I tasted was from Charles Krug Winery and it was all the way back at lot 175.  The last few lots can be some of the best deals as people have already spent their allowance and in the past years some of the auctions’ best deals were close to the end.  This year it was no different as we got this wine for almost half of the regular bottlings price.  Almost all of the auction lots sold well over their retail price plus an 8% buyer’s premium to Sotheby’s along with shipping and tax on top of that.  There were not many great deals in this auction, but it is a lot of fun and the best time to go to Napa Valley, meet the winemakers and taste hundreds of wines in a few days.

Most people know about Napa Valley's Cabernet Sauvignon and although it only accounts for around 3-5% of the total production in terms of California wine volume it is probably closer to 40-50% of all the total sales in terms of dollars.   They do make great Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma and even places like the Santa Cruz Mountains but the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon from California comes from Napa Valley.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is a relatively new invention it is the result of the combination of a white varietal Sauvignon Blanc and a red grape Cabernet Franc crossed by some mad grape scientist in southwest France in the 17th century.  Because of its thick skin and relative ease of cultivation this varietal has spread around the world and makes high quality full bodied red wines in many parts of the wine world.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the easiest wine tastings to sell, can you say immediate gratification, but these wines can age for 20+ years in a very good vintage.   Cabernet Sauvignon always draws a crowd, and this is a walk around wine tasting featuring Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the most famed producers in Napa Valley.  We have the classic Robert Mondavi wines along with Schrader’s Double Diamond and the latest creation from this group, the To Kalon Wine Company.

(92 Points) More precise and pretty, the 2022 Proprietary Red Wine has a great nose of red and black fruit as well as some attractive floral and spicy nuances. It's rich, concentrated, has medium to full-bodied richness, polished tannins, and a great finish. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, it’s a great value in the vintage and will certainly stand up with wines 2-3 times the price. 2021 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon Double Diamond Oakville

Price: $96.50                 Your Price: $84.92                      Quantity in Stock: 8

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon stands to outshine the award-winning 2019 vintage with even deeper concentration and complexity. On the nose, the wine leaps from the glass with ripe blackberry, cassis, black cherry, and red plum, with a lovely herbaceous undertone. The palate expresses juicy red and black fruits with hints of black tea, damp earth, vanilla bean, lavender, and just a touch of flint. With fine-grained tannins and mouthwatering acidity that lingers through the long finish, this wine is ready to drink upon release but will cellar well for years to come.

2019 Schrader Cellars Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa MAGNUM

Price: $1850.00                           Sale Price: $1550.00                Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) A best-barrel selection made by Thomas Rivers Brown and bottled in magnums, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is truly great stuff. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and all-enveloping, it delivers near-endless waves of black cherries, red raspberries and complex but gentle spice notes. Long and mouthwatering on the finish, it seamlessly eliminates any gap between power and elegance, leaving scant possible reaction except Wow!  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2018 Schrader Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa MAGNUM

Price: $2350.00                           Sale Price: $1900.00                Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) Produced predominately from clone 4, as always, the “Old Sparky” label is a best barrel selection from Beckstoffer's To Kalon vineyard in Oakville. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard was aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud French oak barrels for 18 months. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing to begin to reveal fragrant notions of crushed black currants, mulberries, juicy red and black plums and lilacs with hints of dark chocolate, rose oil and tilled soil plus a waft of unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich yet not at all heavy, featuring loads of bright red fruit accents among the profound black berry and savory elements. Multilayered, shimmering with energy and beautifully perfumed, it has gorgeous, ripe, plush tannins and a lively backbone, finishing very long and mineral laced. Bottled in magnums, 418 nine-liter cases were made.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2018 Schrader Cellars Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Magnum

Price: $950.00                              Sale Price: $795.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(98 Points) A tour de force from this team, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy is a barrel selection from this site and I believe it’s brought up all in new Darnajou barrels. It’s a quintessential 2018 with its more reserved, elegant, yet incredibly concentrated style, and like its sibling, it has a beautiful, savory style that includes a wealth of red and black fruits as well as espresso, tobacco leaf, cedar pencil, and dried flowers. It’s actually more reserved and backward than the straight single vineyard release and is full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with massive tannins, integrated acidity, and a great, great finish. Like a lot of top 2018s from Napa, there’s a more Bordeaux’esque quality to this wine. The tannins are firm and present, there’s plenty of edge and cut, and it delivers a beautiful sense of weightlessness on the palate. Forget bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 25-30 years.  Jeb Dunnuck

2017 Schrader Cellars Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Magnum

Price: $800.00                              Sale Price: $695.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(98 Points) A barrel selection from this great vineyard outside of St. Helena, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy is cut from the same cloth as the straight LPV cuvée yet has just a touch more finesse, mid-palate, depth, and length. All Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 100% new Darnajou barrels, its dense purple color is followed by pure cassis and blueberry fruits, and it shows more spring flowers, violets, and sappy herbs with time in the glass. There’s plenty of background oak as well as tannins, so hide bottles for a solid 4-5 years if you can. It’s another incredibly ageworthy 2017 that will keep for 20-25 years or more.  Jeb Dunnuck

2017 Schrader Cellars Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa MAGNUM

Price: $2300.00                           Sale Price: $1795.00                Quantity in Stock: 2

(96 Points) This “Old Sparky” label comes from Beckstoffer’s To Kalon vineyard in Oakville, produced from clone 4 grown on the C1 block (12.5%), clone 4 from the C2 block (12.5%) and clone 6 (50%) and clone 337 (25%) from the B2 block. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged in 100% new Darnajou oak for 20 months. Very deep purple-black colored, the 2017 is redolent of raisin cake, hoisin, preserved plums and crème de cassis with a very provocative perfume of lilacs, cinnamon toast and camphor plus a touch of tilled soil. Full-bodied, the palate is pure seduction, with firm yet velvety tannins and the invigorating freshness lifting the background of all that rich, spicy black fruit, finishing very long. 431 cases were made. Wine Advocate

It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged in 100% new oak for 20 months. Very deep purple-black in color, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is a little closed to begin, giving way to fragrant earth, tobacco leaf and charcoal scents opening out to notions of potpourri, baked plums and Black Forest cake with the cassis coming through after much coaxing. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, lifting the fruit to a very long and mineral-laced finish. 1176 cases were made.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(100 Points) “The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky is very deep purple-black in color with a wonderfully pure nose of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry preserves and black cherry pie with nuances of dried bay leaves, dusty soil, garrigue and new leather plus touches of unsmoked cigars and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, concentrated and jam-packed with flavors, the palate is pure hedonism with a solid line of ripe tannins and great freshness, finishing very long.” Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

2016 Schrader Cellars Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Magnum

Price: $800.00                              Sale Price: $695.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) A barrel selection released only in magnum, similar to the Old Sparky release, yet only from the Las Piedras Vineyard, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Colesworthy Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is another perfect wine from this team, and it’s one of those wine where I wish I could pour ever reader a taste. Offering up thrillingly pure notes of crème de cassis, perfectly ripe blueberries, chocolate, and a crazy, liquid rock-like minerality, it hits the palate with a full-bodied, powerful style that carries tons of richness and depth, yet still just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s certainly one of the greatest Napa Cabernet Sauvignons I’ve ever tasted. As with the base Las Piedras Vineyard, do your best to hold off for a few years.  Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 01/2019

2015 Schrader Cellars CCS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $550.00                              Sale Price: $475.00                   Quantity in Stock: 2

(99 Points) Characteristic of this vintage, there is magnificent fat, sucrosity and thickness on display in all of these wines. They are inky black/purple and seemingly low in acidity, but according to Thomas Rivers Brown the acids were quite sound and healthy. The tannins are present, but so well-disguised by the high levels of glycerin and sucrosity that they are not that noticeable. Several of these wines, including the Schrader, CCS, T6 and LPV have the potential for perfect scores. These will be thrilling to taste next year and will continue the incredible legacy that Schrader Cellars has developed over the years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Price: $1850.00                           Sale Price: $1475.00                Quantity in Stock: 1

(98 Points) "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky, Fred Schrader’s favorite selection, is clone 4 from the To Kalon Vineyard aged in 100% new Darnajou and seems closest in personality and overall style to the CCS. This is a beautiful wine with great intensity and seems to be one of the superstars of this vintage. Smoky barbecue notes intermix with charcoal embers, blackberry, cassis, Christmas fruitcake, licorice and camphor. This is a complex 2014 that is showing beautifully at the moment and will continue to drink well for another 20 years." The Wine Advocate

2014 Schrader Cellars Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Magnum

Price: $800.00                              Sale Price: $695.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(94 Points) “Slightly less impressive, but still a brilliant wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Colesworthy comes across as more backward and closed with a Graves-like minerality. This also hails from the Las Piedras Vineyard and was aged 20 months in 100% new Darnajou. This was the most reserved of all of the 2014s from Schrader, will probably benefit from several years of bottle age, and keep for 15 or more years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2013 Schrader Cellars Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Magnum

Price: $1300.00                           Sale Price: $1000.00                Quantity in Stock: 1

(98+ Points) Close to perfection is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy, which is clone 337. This is aged in 100% new Darnajou and soaks up the new oak beautifully. Notes of lead pencil shavings, forest floor, vanilla, blackberry and cassis jump from the glass of this opaque purple, full-bodied, magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon, which is super-rich, fabulously pure and just a killer wine on the palate. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2010 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Oakville Napa Magnum

Price: $1595.00                           Sale Price: $1250.00                Quantity in Stock: 1

(98 Points)  "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Old Sparky, made from clone 4, 6 and 337, displays a dense opaque purple color as well as an incredible nose of graphite, cedarwood, incense, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, vanillin and abundant blackberry and black currant liqueur. Gorgeously rich and textured with a nearly endless finish, this super intense, full throttle wine needs 5-7 years of bottle age and should drink well over the following 25-30 years. It was aged 20 months in 100% new oak barrels." RP Oct 2013

"Year-in and year-out this is one of the most interesting as well as fascinating group of wines and projects in Napa Valley. First, Schrader has two committed owners, secondly a brilliant winemaker in Thomas Brown, and thirdly, one of the true first-growth vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley, the famed Beckstoffer-owned To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. There is also a new Beckstoffer vineyard in Oakville called Las Piedras. Additionally, they source grapes from the Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard in Rutherford, several miles north of Oakville. In top vintages, Schrader’s Beckstoffer Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines can be as good as money can buy ... anywhere in the world." Wine Advocate

(95 Points) The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from the To Kalon Vineyard celebrates the 50th anniversary of the great Robert Mondavi and his extraordinary vision to create something special in the heart of Napa Valley. A beautifully polished wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, it is still tightly knit and showing high-quality oak. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with outstanding depth, ripeness and purity. There is plenty of backbone and tannin for 25-30 years of cellaring. The wine shows notes of chocolate and plenty of blackcurrant fruit and blackberry. This is a beauty and certainly a great reserve and worthy homage to the legendary Robert Mondavi. (RP) Wine Advocate, Review Date: 12/2015

(96 Points) During my visit, I was also able to taste the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which now, at 10 years of age, is showing beautifully, and I’d guess is at the early stages of its prime drinking window. Lots of blackcurrants, tobacco, cedary spice, and a touch of earthy meatiness all flow from this full-bodied, ripe, layered, and beautifully textured Cabernet. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has another 10-15 years of prime drinking, then, I suspect, a gradual decline after that.  Jeb Dunnuck

2001 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa

Price: $250.00                              Sale Price: $195.00                   Quantity in Stock: 3

(94 points)  A brilliant effort from Mondavi, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot) exhibits complex aromatics of forest floor, sweet black cherry and black currant fruit, vanillin and lead pencil shavings. Dense and powerful as well as elegant and concentrated, the finish reveals moderate tannins, and the wine needs another 4-5 years of cellaring, but it has at least 25 years of upside left.  Wine Advocate #195, Jun 2011

(92 Points) Soft and succulent blackberry and cassis fruit upfront, framed by squeaky clean tannins and solid oak elements. This is most notable for its voluptuous, velvety texture, which coats the palate with sweet flavors. It’s not a big wine but a balanced, harmonious one, and a success for the vintage.  Wine Enthusiast, Review Date: 12/2001

1994 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $240.00                              Sale Price: $189.00                   Quantity in Stock: 1

(97 Points) I have drunk some memorable Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons from Robert Mondavi, including the gloriously fragrant, elegant 1971, the powerful, dense 1974, the seductive 1978, the mammothly-endowed, tannic blockbuster 1987, the silky, opulent, super-concentrated 1990, and the compellingly rich, layered 1991. However, if I were to select the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon that may turn out to be the greatest Mondavi has yet made, the 1994 might edge out the 1991 and 1987. It may not appear to be the case, but I am often at a loss for words when it comes to writing about truly profound wines. They seem to have their own stature, presence, and character that transcend the significance of mere words. That being said, Mondavi's 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is an exquisite wine, as well as a Cabernet that may turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage. The deep opaque purple color, and tightly wound nose and flavors still reveal enough profound aromas and flavors to mark this as one of Mondavi's most sensational efforts. The nose possesses a Margaux/Mouton-like cassis, lead pencil, floral aroma, backed-up by copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In the mouth, my notes said, "great stuff." The wine is full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional, and astonishingly well-balanced, with an inner-depth and core of exceptional richness and intensity. All of this has been accomplished without any notion of obtrusive weight, tannin, or alcohol. The finish lasts for 35+ seconds. Because of its luxurious quantity of fruit, this wine will be accessible young, thus much of it will be drunk long before it ever reaches full maturity. However, for those able to buy more than a bottle or two, and who possess the discipline to wait 10-15 years, this wine should prove to be a formidable California Cabernet with a rare complexity, elegance, and richness. It should be at its best between 2002-2025. Readers can look forward to an immensely impressive group of Cabernet Sauvignons from Mondavi, which is not surprising given what this estate has produced over the last several decades. 1994 is unquestionably a great vintage for North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. As the opening comments in this article have stated, 1994 stands above 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 - all outstanding vintages with no shortage of heroic performances. Remarkably, 1995 may turn out to be as profound as 1994, giving California its two greatest back to back vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon ... ever! Wine Advocate # 108 Dec 1996

The goal for our namesake wine is working with To Kalon Vineyard as a whole, crafting a wine from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, while capturing the purity, intensity, and diversity of this special terroir. With soft tannins, plenty of structure, richness, and aromatic excitement, this wine tells the story of the  2022 growing season. The grapes were harvested at night to preserve the freshness of the fruit. Careful sorting and a long, slow fermentation and maceration round out the wine and bring forward the broad spectrum of flavors and aromas inherent in this noble variety.

2021 To Kalon Vineyard Company HWC Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $262.50                              Your Price: $231.00

Named after the founder of To Kalon, H.W.C is produced from one single clonal selection of Cabernet Sauvignon within To Kalon. These vines were originally planted by Robert Mondavi, who was lured to To Kalon by the depth and richness of the wines he made from the vineyard in the 1960s. This incredibly low-yielding selection of Cabernet Sauvignon produces wines with high energy, a black-purple color, and exceptional aromatic and palate intensity—a high-resolution look at this noble variety. While not overly ripe or extracted, the wine has remarkable freshness, texture, richness, and length. Four extra months of barrel aging give it a high level of polish and a silky finish.
