Happy Hour Wine Tasting Featuring Roederer Estate, Domaine Anderson and Merry Edwards with Special Guest the President of Roederer Collection USA Nicole Carter Wednesday, September 11, 2024 6:00 PM

"It wasn't always like this. Before Paris, people didn't drink our wine. I mean, my friends did. But you could hardly consider their palates discerning..."

Bo Barrett - Bottle Shock

We have been good friends with Maison Marque and Domaines for many years and we have hosted at least 100 events over the last 26 years with this family-owned company that was founded in 1987 as the US sales and marketing arm for Champagne Louis Roederer and its California winery, Roederer Estate.  The key objectives were to manage the complex distribution system in order to ensure the delivery of perfect quality products to the consumers as well as to build each individual brand’s image and what a better place to host an event than at the Wine Watch Wine Bar.  So, when I heard that the President of the Roederer Collection USA was coming to South Florida I jumped at the chance to host an event at the wine bar with Nicole Carter.

Today, the company has grown into a well-respected marketer of prestigious, family-owned producers. A group of wineries represented by MMD are owned by Maison Louis Roederer, including:  Roederer Estate, Scharffenberger Cellars, Domaine Anderson, Merry Edwards Winery, Ramos Pinto, Delas Frères, Domaines Ott, and the Bordeaux properties of Château Pichon Comtesse and Château de Pez.

We have everything that this wine group produces in the store and have included all the wines from properties that we are not showing on this offering.  Everything in this portfolio of wines is worthy of being on the shelf at Wine Watch!

This happy hour wine tasting starts at 6pm and chef Toni will be making some appetizers to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $95 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

Happy Hour Wine Tasting Featuring Roederer Estate, Domaine Anderson and Merry Edwards

2020 Roederer Estate

2020 Roederer Estate "Clark Road Vineyard "Anderson Valley Brut Sparkling Wine

Price: $45.00                     Your Price: $39.60

When a wine is made from a single vineyard, rather than from a blend of selected lots of wine, it becomes a representation of a specific place. In the case of our newest offering, 2020 Clark Road Vineyard, it is an expression of a specially chosen site on our estate, or what could be referred to as a “grower” wine. The Roederer Estate house style is modeled upon what we learned from our forebears in France, and in that vein, to make a true “grower” Champagne in France, you must get your hands dirty in the process of crafting your wine from the roots up.

2020 Clark Road Vineyard is a hand-made bottling. This vineyard is on the cool west side of Anderson Valley, where Pinot Noir thrives. We are intimately familiar with this site, which we have been farming since 1999. During those years, we have learned that we can leave the fruit on the vine longer than other sites, and as we allow it to ripen, it develops the juicy acidity so essential to top-quality sparkling wine. Flint and pastry crust aromatics showcase long aging on the yeast and give way to delicate ripe cherry flavors. The bubbles are soft on entry. This wine is bold, yet delicate and long.

Clark Road Vineyard sparkling wine offers insight into a sense of place, and it validates that we belong here, with our hands in this earth. We are delighted to share it with you.

2017 Roederer Estate L'ermitage Anderson Valley Sparkling Wine image

2017 Roederer Estate L'ermitage Anderson Valley Sparkling Wine

Price: $67.50                     Your Price: $59.40

This wine is the marquee Tete De Cuvee bottling from Louis Roederer's domestic, a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, aged for 5 years, this wine has a rich toasty biscuit like nutty aromas to the ripe tree fruit peach and candied lemon citrus. Wow, a very rich and layered wine on the tongue with silky smooth creamy bubbles, a good amount of that nutty and toasty biscuit like character through the finish, very rich and layered with more fruit than minerality but still has some minerality adding some pop to the finish. Finish 45+ Most Excellent

NV Roederer Estate Brut Rose, Anderson Valley, USA image

NV Roederer Estate Brut Rose, Anderson Valley, USA

Price: $36.50                     Your Price: $32.12

(93 points) "This wine is pale-pink salmon-hued with aromas of yeasty brioche, fresh raspberry, youthful strawberry, white tea and spiced orange zest on the nose. The midpalate is firm mousse, dried raspberry, orange blossom, gliding into supple orange cream and white grapefruit with a dry finish. Pair with life." Wine Enthusiast.

2022 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley - click image for full description

2022 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley

Price: $54.75                     Your Price: $48.18

(95 Points) A stunning white, this leaps out of the glass with aromatic mango, orange blossom and salted ripe melon flavors. Gains complexity from grilled peach, lemon oil, savory litsea oil and toasted herb elements, with a fleshy, creamy texture and fresh acidity.  Wine Spectator

2020 Domaine Anderson Chardonnay Anderson Valley image

2020 Domaine Anderson Chardonnay Anderson Valley

Price: $30.00                     Sale $26.40

(91 Points) A textural Chardonnay with crystalline purity and plenty of tension to balance out the rich fruit flavours. Wet river stones, a saline brightness, white flowers and springtime herbs are interlaced with apricot, white peach, and lemon oil on this medium-bodied, expressive Chardonnay. Organically farmed grapes are hand-picked at night from three estate-grown and organic vineyards in Anderson Valley, near the towns of Boonville, Philo and Navarro along the Navarro River. Whole-cluster pressed, the grapes were allowed to fully oxidise before racking to barrel off the gross lees. Entirely barrel-fermented and aged 10 months in oak, of which just four percent is new.  Decanter

2022 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River image

2022 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River

Price: $86.00                     Your Price: $75.68

You'll first notice the beautiful garnet color followed by fragrances of vanilla cola, black raspberry, fresh thyme and plum compote. On entry, the mouthfeel is soft and lush, with notes of black cherry, plum, cassis and milk chocolate. Juicy acidity bonds with structured tannins and lifts the long, spicy finish.

2019 Domaine Anderson Pinot Noir Anderson Valley image

2019 Domaine Anderson Pinot Noir Anderson Valley

(92 Points) Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Estate features Bing cherries, cranberries, wood smoke and dried herbs on the nose, with nuances of licorice and bitters. The light-bodied palate is soft, bright and juicy, with understated yet layered fruits and a satisfying, spicy finish.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A bit about Nicole Carter

Q&A with Nicole Carter: On Overseeing Two Iconic Estates

As President of Roederer Collection USA (Merry Edwards Winery in the Russian River Valley; Diamond Creek Vineyards in the Napa Valley; and Roederer Estate, Domaine Anderson and Scharffenberger Cellars in the Anderson Valley), Nicole is responsible for all aspects of the operations at all five properties. She has more than 20 years of marketing, winemaking and viticulture, sales, and export experience, including most recently serving as the Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Winemaking for Hess Family Wine Estates. Nicole spent 18 years with Treasury Wine Estates in several global marketing and public relations roles. She is a Certified Specialist of Wine and holds additional certifications from the Court of Master Sommeliers, the Wine and Spirits Education Trust and the Culinary Institute of America Wine School in Napa Valley.

A bit about Roederer Estate

Roederer Estate - Wikipedia

Jean-Claude Rouzaud, former president of Champagne Louis Roederer, understood that first-rate estate vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines, which is why he selected the 580-acre Anderson Valley property in 1982. Jean-Claude, who has since handed down the family tradition and position to son Frédéric Rouzaud (pictured), believed that estate-owned vineyards were essential to ensure the highest quality wine, spending several years exploring California’s diverse regions for ideal growing conditions. The vineyards were planted in 1984, the winery was built in 1986, and the first Roederer Estate MV Brut cuvée was introduced in 1988.

Rooted in viticulture, Roederer Estate is the California outpost of a French family. Family-owned, farmers and winemakers at heart. Since its debut in 1988, it has established its reputation as one of California’s premier sparkling wines remaining true to the excellence and style of its French heritage.

Relying on age-old traditions and empirical knowledge of our estate vineyards allows winemaker Arnaud Weyrich to craft his best interpretation of Anderson Valley sparkling wines. Far beyond chemistry and science is the artistic element: the tasting and blending of aromas, textures, creating a tactile and aromatic feel of length and balance — measured only by one’s senses.

A bit about Domaine Anderson

Domaine Anderson | MMD — Maisons ...

The region’s ideal climate of warm days and fog-cooled nights led Jean-Claude Rouzaud, patriarch of the Louis Roederer family, to this remote area in 1981 to begin cultivation of premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Today we continue the pursuit of quality at Domaine Anderson under the guidance of Winemaker Darrin Low. Our commitment to land stewardship and sustainable practices extends to each vineyard, ensuring the health of the land for generations to come.

This ethos drives our passion for Biodynamic and organic farming, which respects the bond between soil, plant, and animal as a connected farm-system and promotes the harmony between them. Beneficial insectary plants provide habitat for friendly insects like ladybugs, beetles, and bees, as well as hummingbirds that help control vineyard pests and support pollination. Natural compost preparations restore soil and enhance fruit quality, and a variety of cover crops in rotation benefit vineyard health and suppress diseases and pests.

Darrin grew up in California wine country and developed a fascination for winemaking at an early age. He studied Enology and Viticulture at UC Santa Cruz and studied abroad at l‘Institut d’OEnologie in Bordeaux, France. After graduation, Darrin pursued his passion for Pinot Noir in Oregon’s Willamette Valley before returning home to make wine at J Vineyards & Winery, Grgich Hills Estate, and Flowers Vineyards & Winery. An advocate for organic farming methods and Biodynamic philosophy, Darrin is inspired to carry on his efforts at Domaine Anderson.

Bob’s passion for producing the highest quality wine grapes has been cultivated over a lifetime and more than 30 years of vineyard operations in the Anderson Valley. Raised on his family’s vineyard in Hopland, California, Bob has deep roots as a grape grower and a strongly held vineyard management philosophy—respect the land, care for the soil, listen to the vineyard. His knowledge of the land and commitment to stewardship is invaluable, and his contribution lasting.

At harvest, grapes are picked by hand and transported immediately in small lots from vineyard to the winery, where they are sorted by hand and juice is gently extracted. Wood and stainless steel open-top fermentation tanks are used to achieve precise extraction of fruit structure and color. Slow malolactic fermentation further defines structure and enhances the clarity of site-specific aromatics for our Pinot Noir wines.

We use only carefully selected French oak barrels sourced from Burgundian cooperages, 25%-35% being new in any given vintage. Our winemaking team carefully tracks wine development and maturity, blending separate barrel lots for precise expression of fruit character. Our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are aged for 16 and 12 months, respectively, to fully develop aromas and refine structure. This attentive barrel aging process – known as élevage – results in wines that are rich and naturally complex.

A bit about Merry Edwards

Merry Edwards - Merry Edwards

In 1997, Merry Edwards Winery began producing critically acclaimed terroir-driven Pinot Noirs and Sauvignon Blanc using site-specific viticulture in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations. Over two decades, Merry assembled a stellar collection of vineyards and with her meticulous attention to detail crafted Pinot Noirs of immense depth, elegant structure, and exceptional longevity. Her Sauvignon Blanc is among the most sought after in the world.

Now a Certified California Sustainable Winery, the brand entered a new chapter after Merry’s retirement. Merry’s handpicked successor, Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden, and Winery President Nicole Carter have taken up exactly where Merry left off and will continue to make wines treasured by legions of Merry Edwards’ fans well into the future.

Merry Edwards approaches life with graceful intensity. Now in the fifth decade of her winemaking career, Merry has earned the universal respect of winemaking peers, grape growers and academicians. A self-described perfectionist, she has constantly refined her vineyard practices, wines and techniques. Merry does not rest on her laurels ― she grows. “People frequently ask what the best wine is I have ever made. I tell them it’s not made yet!”

Food was Merry’s gateway to wine. She recalls, “When I was a teenager, my mother had cookbooks produced by the California Wine Advisory Board. Wine was an ingredient in every recipe, so I started cooking with wine.”

Fascinated with food chemistry and fermentation, Merry brewed beer as a simple extension of making bread and working with yeast. Then she purchased a book on home winemaking and began to ferment fruit wines. In 1970, when Merry earned her B.S. degree in Physiology from the University of California at Berkeley, her friends knew her as the accomplished amateur who made The Merry Vintners wines.

In 1971, while attending graduate school in nutrition at UC Berkeley, Merry met Andy Quady, who was studying winemaking at the University of California at Davis. “Looking through Andy’s books, I became fascinated,” Merry recalls. “I was surprised to learn one could study winemaking as a discipline.” Within a month, Merry shifted her graduate studies to wine at UC Davis. In the winter of 1973, she earned a master’s degree in Food Science with an emphasis in Enology. Of the three women in the master’s program, only Merry became a winemaker.

While seeking her first winemaking position, Merry encountered gender discrimination time and again. Supported by her mentor, Dr. Maynard Amerine, she stayed the course, pursuing a career as a winemaker, rejecting positions as a laboratory technician, the traditional role of women in the wine industry at that time.

Merry’s perseverance precipitated changes in recruitment at UC Davis and beyond, paving the way for future generations of women to take charge in the cellar. For her master’s thesis, she devised a method for the analysis of lead in wine. She then undertook a large-scale survey ― her findings caused the industry to discontinue the production and use of lead capsules.

Consulting Winemaker Richard Graf and the owners of Mount Eden Vineyards selected Merry to be their winemaker in February 1974. She made three vintages while at Mount Eden and earned a reputation as a rising star in the California wine industry. In 1975, Merry selected cuttings from Mount Eden’s Pinot Noir vineyard and sent them to UC Davis for heat treatment (to remove virus) and propagation. This field selection became UCD clone 37, also known as the “Merry Edwards selection” and a star performer in the Russian River Valley today.

2021 Chateau De Pez St. Estephe

Price: $48.75                     Your Price: $39.00

(92 Points) Lively on initial impact with the bright red fruits to the fore, juicy and alive, giving a shot of acidity and brightness on the palate - really so joyful and inspiring before the tannins come in and gently frame the fruit towards the long, slightly spiced ending with clove and cinnamon flavours. Such St-Estèphe terroir markers here and you're getting that more than anything else giving it a great signature. I like the simplicity of this, it's not trying too hard with salinity and a touch of austerity showing the youth and minerality in the tongue-scrapingly clean finish. Refreshing and compelling.  Decanter
