DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU CHAMBERTIN BURGUNDY TASTING BACK TO THE 1985 VINTAGE Saturday, March 8th 7:30pm and all the Rousseau in the store on SALE!!

“You can’t buy happiness but you can buy wine, and that’s kind of the same thing.” – Anonymous

And Burgundy is one of the wines that really makes me happy.  I was ecstatic when we came across this collection of Armand Rousseau and what could top a ten year vertical of Domaine de la Romanee Conti  La Tache back to 1978 (Last Year’s B-Day Tasting)?   Ten vintages of Armand Rousseau Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze back to 1985!

The Far East has recognized the collectible nature of Burgundy and that although the top producers of Burgundy may produce a few dozen different wines, they only make a few hundred cases of these wines each year and they are much harder in the aftermarket.  Unlike the great wines of Bordeaux who get sold over and over again before they are consumed Burgundy lovers don’t usually sell their most prized possessions they hang on to them until they die planning to drink each precious bottle.

We received a few bottles of the 1985 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru a few years back and sold 3 of the 4 at $3500/btl.  I kept one bottle hoping to find a few more to create an experience with multiple vintages of wines from this producer.  The 1985 vintage is now selling for upwards of $10,000 per bottle!  Any smart wine merchant would probably sell the wine and take the money but I’m more interested in tasting this wine, especially after having the 1990 last year- it was AMAZING !!   We recently acquired a cellar with a nice collection of wines from the Domaine so now that we have the other pieces to the puzzle we can offer Burgundy lovers this « Once in a Lifetime » Burgundy experience.

If you are a serious Burgundy lover you want to take a look at this offering it is an amazing collection of Armand Rousseau and this tasting is a “Once In a Lifetime” event!  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $2950 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.  Please let us know when you make your reservations if you have any dietary restrictions and chef Toni will be happy to accommodate you.

A bit about Domaine Armand Rousseau:

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti, Leflaive, Jacques Prieur, and a small handful of names that are the stuff of Burgundy legend. These domaines produce impeccable quality wines from vintage to vintage, and consistently place Burgundy at the top of the wine world.

Each of the domaine’s prestigious holdings are in Gevrey Chambertin, with the exception of Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St. Denis. The domaine controls a remarkable 8 hectares of Grand Crus, including 6.25 acres in Chambertin and 3.45 in Clos de Bèze. Rousseau owns 5.5 acres in the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques, which accounts for 40% of the total acreage, and 100% of the 2.5-acre monopole, Grand Cru Clos des Ruchottes.

In August 2012, following the purchase of Château de Gevrey-Chambertin’s vineyards by its new Chinese owner, Louis Ng Chi-sing, chief operating officer at SJM Holdings in Macau, its management was entrusted to Eric Rousseau of Domaine Rousseau. The five-acre property, which includes the Château, is comprised of small plots of the grand cru and premier cru ‘Chambertin’ vineyards, while the balance is Gevrey-Chambertin AOC.

Eric Rousseau is adamant that yields should be severely limited to promote faithful expression of the individual vineyard. The wines age in barrel for 18 months before bottling. Rousseau releases its wines exactly two years after the vintage.

(90-92 Points) Aromas of sweet berry fruit, wild plums, baking chocolate, spices and candied citrus rind introduce Rousseau's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a medium-bodied, lively wine with a generous core of fruit, bright acids and powdery structuring tannins. Combining a certain sunny generosity with real vibrancy and precision, this appears to have the makings of Rousseau's finest communal bottling since 2012 or 2010, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it in bottle in a few years. As I've written before, the communal Gevrey includes fruit from premiers crus Perrières and Etournelles Saint-Jacques. January 2021 Week 2, The Wine Advocate

2013 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $3900.00                               Sale Price: $3250.00    Quantity in Stock: 4

(98 Points) The 2013 Chambertin is every bit as magical as the Clos de Bèze, soaring from the glass in an absolutely classic aromatic constellation of plums, red and black cherries, grilled meat, stunning complex soil tones, cocoa, woodsmoke, vanillin oak and a beautiful topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bdoied, pure and utterly seamless, with a very refined attack, a sappy core, stunning soil signature, fine-grained tannins and brilliant length and grip on the tangy and spectacular finish. Like the 2013 Clos de Bèze, the Rousseau Chambertin will continue to put on weight with bottle age. (Drink between 2025-2075) Review Date: 11/2014, John Gilman

2011 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $3900.00                               Sale Price: $3250.00    Quantity in Stock: 4

(96 Points) This is completely different from the Bèze aromatically speaking as here the nose is brooding and recalcitrant and only aggressive swirling liberates fresh scents of spice, wet stone, game and dark berry fruits. There is outstanding richness to the powerful and impressively scaled flavors that possess an abundance of dry extract that imparts a velvety quality to the mid-palate while also buffering the tightly wound core of firm tannins on the driving mineral-inflected and hugely persistent finish. This is a stunner of a wine and one of the great wines of the 2011 vintage. Burghound

2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $6000.00                               Sale Price: $4950.00    Quantity in Stock: 1

(98 Points) This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine. (AM) Review Date: 01/2012, Burghound

2008 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $3900.00                               Sale Price: $3250.00    Quantity in Stock: 1

(96 Points) A still mildly toasty nose features remarkably dense yet elegant aromas of deeply pitched yet extremely cool and restrained red and blue fruit aromas that are nuanced by a broad range of earth, game and underbrush hints. There is an utterly beguiling purity to the relatively refined but muscular medium full-bodied plus flavors that are strikingly complex, vibrant and perfectly balanced before culminating in a gorgeously long finish. This is brimming with upside development potential and while it too will require plenty of patience, its class and grace are such that it can be enjoyed now though I would strongly counsel waiting. In a word, magnificent. Tasted thrice recently with consistent notes.  Review Date: 04/2016, Burghound

2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $3900.00                               Sale Price: $3250.00    Quantity in Stock: 7

(95 Points) This muscular red shows macerated cherry and plum flavors, with leather, tobacco and a wild, feral character. Smooth and concentrated, with a long finish of sweet fruit and mineral. A chewy version. Best from 2014 through 2030. *Collectibles* (BS)  Review Date: 04/2010, Wine Spectator

2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $6000.00                               Sale Price: $5150.00    Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) Medium-full colour. Closed-in but rich, concentrated nose. Good grip here. Medium-full body. Ripe, balanced, fresh and very profound and elegant. Exceptionally fine, complex fruit. Good as his Clos de Bèze is, this is, as always, just that bit superior. A great wine. (CC)  Review Date: 02/2018, Decanter

2003 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru

Price: $3900.00                               Sale Price: $3250.00    Quantity in Stock: 2

(96 Points) A supple red, this exudes cinnamon, plum and cocoa aromas augmented by flavors of licorice and mineral, with a long, lively finish. Balanced, yet needs time to integrate the dense tannins. *Collectibles* (BS) Review Date: 05/2007, Wine Spectator

(99 Points) By the time I arrived at the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin here, I was emotionally spent from the symphony of 2014 brilliance that had preceded them. However, both these wines are so profound that there is no doubt that they are the two red wines of the vintage this year! The 2014 Clos de Bèze soars from the glass in a brilliantly expressive nose of red and black plums, red and black cherries, gorgeous minerality, raw cocoa, gamebirds, violets and cedary new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and sappy at the core, with magical soil inflection, laser-like focus, enormous nascent complexity and a very, very long, tangy and fine-grained finish of enormous energy and seamless balance. Stunning juice. (Drink between 2027-2090) Review Date: 12/2015, John Gilman

2011 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

Price: $3295.00                               Sale Price: $2650.00    Quantity in Stock: 2

(96 Points) This year, Eric Rousseau retained ten percent of the stems for the Clos de Bèze. This is a very exotic and stunning young wine, but it was starting to already shut down for a bit of winter hibernation at the time of my visit in early November and it will want a good dozen years in the cellar to really start to blossom and drink at or near its true potential. The superb nose is a blend of red plums, blood orange, grilled meats, raw cocoa, a beautifully complex base of soil, coffee bean and spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with ripe tannins, bright acids and stunning length and grip on the very youthful finish. This is one of the more structured 2011s that I crossed paths with on this trip- albeit with all of the potential elegance and precise expression of terroir still very much in evidence as coming down the road with sufficient bottle age! A great wine- but a fair bit of patience will be necessary. Review Date: 11/2012, John Gilman

2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

Price: $4600.00                               Sale Price: $3950.00    Quantity in Stock: 1

(96 Points) This is quite ripe yet the impression is one of freshness with no surmaturité while the aromas reveal an exuberant spiciness to the dense mix of red and black fruit and wet stone aromas. The supple, round and marvelously well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors possess a silky mid-palate brimming with dry extract on the almost painfully intense and massively long mineral-driven finish that displays stunning persistence. The 2009 is an impeccably well-balanced effort in yet another in a long line of great vintages for this storied wine.  Review Date: 01/2012, Burghound

2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

Price: $3600.00                               Sale Price: $2950.00    Quantity in Stock: 4

(96 Points) The 2007 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is drinking beautifully at the moment. It has a pixilated bouquet that is utterly entrancing – red currant, bergamot, hints of pomegranate seeds and an underlying mineralite that is divine. The palate is perfectly balanced with extremely fine tannins. There is something regal and self-assured about this Clos-de-Beze, with a sense of weightlessness in the mouth that is bewitching. This both satisfies the senses and flirts with profundity. Dare I suggest this is too exquisite to cellar? Damn – I’ve just gone and done it. Drink now-2020. (96 Points) Fullish colour. Medium-full weight on the nose. High-toned, very classy, very well-balanced nose. Very lovely fruit. Fullish body. Pure and intense. Not the biggest of wines, but with a vigour and a depth of flavour which is hard to beat. Very lovely at the end. (CC)  Review Date: 02/2018, Decanter
