Speaking of GREAT wines from the U.S.A…. I need a few good men or women to help me drink some really fine wine on this occasion our annual California Cult Cabernet Sauvignon wine tasting. We will be sampling some very small production Napa Valley wines and the price of the event is less than one half the price of a single bottle of Screaming Eagle- which will be on the table tonight!!
What makes a "cult wine"? Do the producers pick the grapes at night under the full moon? Do they make it under a secret oath or while sacrificing a small farm animal? These ultra-expensive, hard to find wines from California just have more customers than they do bottles to go around. The simplest factor in the economy kicks in with these wines, good old supply and demand. These wines are priced where they are because that’s what they sell for!
All the wines on the table tonight are from the cellar of our good friend Dr. Robert Maliner. Dr. Maliner is one of the biggest wine collectors in South Florida and we are trying to help him finish up his last 6000 bottles! The best offer we have if you have more wine than you can drink like Bob…we will help you drink it!!

Screaming Eagle was founded by former real estate agent Jean Phillips in 1986, who initially set about selling fruit to local producers in Napa. After a few years, a few friends convinced Jean to set up a winery, and the first vintage of Screaming Eagle was released in 1992. The highly unfluential US wine critic Robert Parker rated this first vintage at 99 points, and cult status was sealed. Since then, the 1997 and 2007 vintages both achieved the coveted 100-point rating from the famous wine critic.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has turned out even better than I predicted seven years ago. Made by Helen Turley when she was the consultant at Blankiet from tightly spaced, steep hillside vineyards planted by her husband, John Wetlaufer, it exhibits a beautiful nose of flowers, high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, creme de cassis, chocolate, espresso and blueberries. Full-bodied, with great intensity, purity and texture, this is a wonderfully dense, full-throttle wine that is still an adolescent and likely to stay one for at least another 5-7 years. (99 Points) Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is closed and largely unyielding at this very youthful stage. With coaxing, it offers up black cherries, crushed blackberries and mulberries notes with hints of pencil lead, damp soil, truffles, licorice and dark chocolate plus a waft of cigar boxes. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is as tight as anything, displaying a rock-solid backbone of taut, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the muscular fruit, finishing with earth and mineral layers. This is a stunning wine that really will need a good 4-5 years in bottle, at least, and should give much pleasure over the next 25-30 years. This was tasted as a barrel sample. (100 points) A remarkable wine, the 2010 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select has gone from strength to strength since it was in cask. It is stunningly rich, with classic, fragrant notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, vanilla, graphite and spring flowers. It exhibits an opaque purple color, with a full-bodied, massive mouthfeel, but no heaviness, and again, a flawless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. It’s classic California Cabernet, but beautifully put together, showing impeccable craftsmanship and fabulous potential. This is obviously a very young, infantile style of Cabernet that won’t hit its prime for at least another decade and last close to half a century, based on how older vintages that were less well-endowed have matured from Shafer.
