"Drinking is a very demanding profession and I can't hold down two jobs at once"

Morgan Freidman

We would like to remind our "Wine Drinking People" that everyday above ground is reason to celebrate as you never know when your last day is…. don’t save that special bottle make it a special occasion tonight and drink it!!

We have invested heavily in the last few vintages from Burgundy and it’s time to start to put a little work in and host a few tastings to sample the goods.  The 2020 vintage is very short from Burgundy and 2021 is even smaller but with the 2022 vintage things are back to normal in terms of the size of the harvest and they have had a sting of outstanding vintages in Burgundy that is unpresidented.

The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $195 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.  Please let us know when you make your reservations if you have any dietary restrictions or aversions and chefs Toni and Dani will be happy to accommodate you.

Pascal Bonhomme

A throw back to classic winemaking, Pascal Bonhomme has some of the most desirably situated sites in Vire-Clessé. Founded in 2001, the estate is a small farm of 6 hectares. Pascal believes this manageable size offers the greatest opportunity to create wine exactly as he envisions. Similar to vignerons in the Côte d'Or, Pascal harvests completely by hand and meticulously vinifies using pneumatic pressing.

This crisp chardonnay has a fragrant expression of springtime honeysuckle with notes of lemon balm, white peach and quince. A flow of mineral underpinnings encapsulate ripe yellow and green apple, Asian pear, crushed almonds and honey with bright acidity on the tongue adding a vitalizing freshness to the wine.

The Boigelot family’s winemaking and Burgundy history began in 1918 when the grandfather of Jacques Boigelot (great-grandfather of Eric Boigelot) settled in the small village of Monthelie.

The Shiekman family first began working with the Boigelot family in the mid 1960’s when the estate was owned and directed by Jacques Boigelot. He had a small estate located in Monthelie where he produced small quantities of hand-crafted estate bottled Burgundy wines primarily within the Monthelie appellation, producing red and white Monthelie wines.

Jacques son Eric created his own Domaine in 1990, incorporating Jacques 6 hectares, and today, 28 years later, has vineyards total nearly 25 acres, producing red and white wines from Monthelie, white wines from Meursault, as well as two red wines from Volnay and Pommard. The vineyards average 40 years old with a number of parcels still in active production average 60 years of age.

The winery and his home are located in the heart of Meursault and today Eric Boigelot and his wife Patricia are producing exquisite hand-crafted estate bottled Burgundy wines. Everything is done by hand, including the harvesting and all the wines are aged in 100% oak barrels between 10 to 15 months.

DOMAINE RAPET

Domaine Rapet Père et Fils is an old winemaking family that can trace its roots in Pernand-Vergelesses back to 1765, thanks to the testimonial of a “tastevin” (a wine tasting cup traditionally carried by a sommelier) stamped with the year and the family name.

The estate today comprises 20 hectares of land in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses, Beaune, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Chorey-Les-Beaune, and Aloxe-Corton.

Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are planted in the various vineyards, which include parcels in three Grands Crus: Corton-Charlemagne (white wine), Corton (red wine), and Corton Pougets (red wine), all situated on the slope of the Corton hill, as well as nine Premier Cru plots.

Vincent Rapet and his wife Sylvette oversee the estate, and Vincent is known for his attention to detail and classic winemaking style. His whites are whole cluster pressed, fermented in barrels (about 20% new oak), and aged in 350-liter barrels; while the reds see an average 15-day maceration period followed by maturation in 228-liter oak barriques (around 30% new wood).

Domaine Heitz-Lochardet - Armand Heitz

The Armand Heitz estate was established in the mid-19th century when the Nié-Vantey family, who owned several parcels of vines in Burgundy at the time, acquired the land on which the famous estate is poised today. Subsequently, marriages and inheritances kept the vineyard within the same family, until 2011 when Armand Heitz took over the running of the estate. After obtaining a degree in oenology and working with great passion and rigour on one hectare of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Armand Heitz decided to expand the estate in order to develop a wider range of appellations and therefore different styles.

Thus, the Armand Heitz estate extends sumptuously from Beaune to Chassagne-Montrachet and offers very authentic Burgundy wines that reflect their terroir. Among the appellations in which the estate's vines are grown, some of the most prestigious climats in the region stand out and testify to the quality of the estate's vineyards: Pommard 1er Cru, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru, Meursault 1er Cru and Beaune 1er Cru.

Indeed, this enthusiasts is able to produce perfectly balanced wines thanks to the estate's vast diversity of terroirs. To obtain a very pure style, Armand Heitz uses permaculture and agro-ecology, which enables nature to express itself freely. Knowledge of agronomy and environmental sustainability go hand in hand to ensure a deep respect for the vines and for the wines, which are transparent and boast a bold identity.

Bernard Millot

“We have been a winegrower family for four generations and operate an area of 8 hectares.

We farm different plots in the municipalities of Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Beaune. Over the generations, our philosophy has always been to work with respect for plants and nature. To produce wines where the terroir dominates with each year a vintage effect which is essential for us.

Wine is a living product, different every year and evolving over time.   Today, I work with the help of my parents (Bernard and Sylvie) as well as with a jobber. I want to keep the family estate going.

Wine is a friendly product that unites and excites. And it is with joy that we will share all this with you.”       MILLOT Emilien

This wine boasts a refreshing palate with notes of limestone and steel, complemented by a hint of slate and light citrus, particularly lemon. The wine's minimal oak presence adds to its appeal, lending a pleasingly sharp yet smooth finish. Its earthy character, primarily derived from limestone, adds depth and complexity to the overall profile.

Michel Juillot

The Domaine Michel Juillot covers 31 hectares across the Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune. Created in 1928 in Mercurey, his vineyard is composed by 21 hectares of Pinot Noir and 10 hectares of Chardonnay. This is a production of 180,000 bottles, over twenty appellations, half of Premiers and Grands Crus, which comes out every year from the winery.

The Mercurey appellation, a 650 hectares area, offers to winemakers rich and various soil. It is thanks to this particular terroir, that the wines have a beautiful natural structure. A least intrusive vinification as possible is done to keep these seductive properties found in the wines from Domaine Michel Juillot.

«We provide the same care in the work of all parcels we exploit because our added value is in the terroir. The difference between a grand cru, a premier cru, a Village or a Bourgogne generic wine, comes from the soil, the earth, the sun and the grape in its environment», said Laurent Juillot.

The estate integrates a great respect for the environment, in a quality goal. Every year harvest are made by hand, and a selection of grapes on a sorting table allow to keep only the best.

The wine is a unique drink that turns over time. Since the birth of the grapes on the vine until its explosion of flavors in the mouth of the taster. Each environment in which it evolves is unique and will give him so all his expression and all its magic a few months later. It is a story of patience and passion.

The wine is a story of sharing and include expertise. Laurent Juillot is the fourth generation of winemakers, and uses all the family’s knowledge, control and senbility, already present in Mercurey in the fourteenth century.

Real passionate, he transmits his values and his passion for the wines of his estate through experience over several trips to other wineries abroad. All his know-how is reflected in every vintage, in which he committed developing wines full of personality and emotions.

Constantly seeking to improve the quality, he adapts over the years his method of production. Since 2007, the use of a vertical press provides very silky tannins without bitterness. In recent years, his work has focused on the identification of indigenous yeasts of each plot. The vatting by gravity also keeps intact all the fruitiness potential of the grapes.

For decades the wines of Domaine Michel Juillot get maximum visibility in the French and international reference guides, in recognition of great work and a number of restaurants, among the most quoted, have trusted in singular expression of these cuvées

Almost half of the production is thus found on the tables of countries around the world, from America to Asia, to Africa and Oceania, without forgetting the old continent. The other part is sold in France through different distribution channels.

Henri & Philippe Jouan

Domaine Henri Jouan, now labelled as Philippe Jouan, is a small domaine located on a side street in Morey-St-Denis, a village in the Burgundy wine region of France.

The estate has a rich family history rooted in winemaking, with Philippe Jouan's great-grandfather being a barrel cooper and his grandfather involved in wine distribution. The vines for the Domaine were acquired from Philippe's grandmother's side of the family, the Noirot family.

Although the Domaine is relatively small, spanning only three hectares, it has gained recognition over the years. Philippe's father played a significant role in putting the Domaine on the map, albeit discreetly.

Previously, a significant portion of the grapes were sold in bulk to a distinguished négociant, but recently they have expanded their winery and can retain more wine for their own production. However, they still maintain a relationship with their long-term merchant customer, with whom they have collaborated for 65 years across generations.

The Domaine values gentle pressing to avoid extracting complex tannins in winemaking practices. Philippe follows his father's approach of destemming the grapes but has introduced a variation by adding back a small proportion (up to 10%) of the stems. They have also made some vineyard adjustments, reducing treatments and implementing strategic de-leafing on the north side to inhibit oidium, a fungal disease.

Domaine Collotte

It was at the 2006 Grand Jours de Bourgogne that I was looking for excellent Burgundies at equally excellent value. Marsannay came to mind as a good candidate, but aside from a couple of well-known producers, I was disappointed in the quality of many. That is until I came upon Philippe Collotte. A tall, quiet man, but with a lot of passion to make superb wines just waiting to be unleashed. Producing lower yields, more selection before and at harvest, de-stemmed fruit, and, for us, he bottles everything unfiltered. His Bourgogne parcel was planted in 1947 and there are 5 parcels of 50+ year old vines in his super-value Marsannay VV. Indeed all of the Marsannay single vineyard cuvées are old vines. Tillage is all done by plowing, no chemical weed-killers ever used, and the philosophy is that a lot of work in the vines promotes healthy grapes for excellent wine. Collotte's yields are well below the appellation's allowances. All fermentations are only done with indigenous yeasts.

Philippe's daughter, Isabelle, has completed viticulture school and has joined her father in the domaine. Her specialty is making the family's superb Marsannay blancs. The wines produced by the Collottes are some of the best kept secrets in our portfolio. -- Peter Weygandt

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay

"Thierry Glantenay has taken over at his family domaine and is now producing exquisite, ethereal Volnay and full, powerful Pommard from many of the best terroirs. Thierry also has a small but brilliantly sited plot of Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières with some 80 year old vines. They don't have a lot in quantity to offer as the domaine is only 7 hectares. They farm their own vines and make their own wines ensuring the best available quality. In the winery, everything is done gently but with perfection. Thierry trained as an engineer and so is always asking questions of himself and his methods, perfecting things with each effort. Across the board these wines are precise, focused and reflective of their underlying terroir, with great sappiness and depth in the mid-palates, coupled with brilliant structural integrity that makes them, to me, amongst the finest wines made in the southern half of Burgundy. Thierry is a meticulous and talented winemaker, who uses no more than twenty-five percent new oak for any of his top wines, allowing for a beautiful synthesis of pure fruit, delicate framing and a beautifully transcribed expression of terroir in each and every wine. There is a refined elegance and perfumed precision to the Glantenay wines that is very special, and is most impressive when working with the sometimes rather youthfully "sauvage" elements that can be found in young Pommard. Thierry is one of the stars of the Côte de Beaune, and because he is working in the village of Volnay, rather than Vosne-Romanée or Gevrey-Chambertin, his brilliant wines also offer extraordinary value in today's crazy world of Burgundy pricing."
