Bonneau Du Martray and Screaming Eagle Wine Tasting with Special Guest Mary Margaret McCamic MW Tuesday, February 24, 2026 7:30 PM

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink, I feel shame! Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this wine, they might be out of work, and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, “It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver?” -Jack Handey

I know exactly how Jack feels about drinking all this wine…How can I be selfish and worry about my liver.  After all I’m training for the wine drinking Olympics in LA 2028!

So, when our friends at Bonneau du Martray called and said they wanted to host an event at the wine bar, I said how about including the famous Screaming Eagle?  Both properties are owned by Stanley Kroenke and it seems everything he touches turns to gold.  We include the eagle in a cult Napa Valley Cabernet tasting every year and it finished in second place this year, but we were showing the 2011 vintage, the lowest rated Screaming Eagle of all time still was amazing!

I attended a 2014 white burgundy tasting last night which included the 2014 Bonneau Du Martray Corton Charlemagne and for me it was in second place behind the 2014 Ramonet Batard Montrachet and there were a lot of high-level Burgundy on the table including the 2014 Montrachet from Etienne Sauzet, both the Sauzet and Ramonet wines are more expensive and even harder to find than the Bonneau Du Martray but comparable when it comes to quality the Corton Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray is about as good as it gets for white Burgundy.

Join us as we welcome Mary Margaret McCamic MW to the wine bar for a special evening of Grand Cru white Burgundy and Napa’s ultimate cult Cabernet Sauvignon.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner and gratuity is $1950 + tax.  For reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

A bit about Bonneau Du Martray:

Domaine Bonneau Du Martray

The Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne, appreciated wine and promoted moderate consumption. He pushed his administrators to set up "precise rules for the production and maintenance of quality viticulture for the benefit of all", according to Corinne Lefort and Karine Valentin*. He required his overseers to apply innovative methods and techniques in the vineyard and in the cellars.

Charlemagne's secretary took note of this imperial injunction, writing: "Let our intendants take care of our vines, those under their care, and take good care of them, pour the wine into good containers and make sure that they are not spoiled in any way. (...) Let them send for our use the product of the vines of our vineyards. » **

"He who knows how to drink knows how to rule" rang true for Charlemagne. In Fronsac, while he intended to repel the Vikings and Saracens, his table was enlivened by the vermeil wine produced in the region. In Tours, he drank the wines of Saumur. Charlemagne's reign was long, and throughout it he enjoyed tasting local wines while he himself was a major owner of vineyards.

Because of the warming sunlight, Charlemagne would have noticed that the snow on the hill of Corton melted faster than on the other hills of the region, so he ordered vines to be planted in this particularly bright place.

Later, in 775, Charlemagne donated his Corton vines to the Abbey of Saulieu. There, the Benedictine monks utilized the most advanced wine-making techniques of the time and were therefore the most capable of making the kingdom's wines shine. This was an insightful choice that the following centuries did not contradict.

*Grands Palais - Editions Les Idées Claires (2008)

**In the book « Charlemagne » from Georges Tessier - Editions Marabout (1982)

With the sale of Church-owned properties organized by the revolutionary government in 1791, Charlemagne's vines left the hands of the monks of Saint-Andoche in Saulieu and were bought at auctions by François Ray and quickly resold to Simon Very.

Marie-Eugénie, Simon Very's daughter, married Charles Bonneau du Martray, who was a descendant of Nicolas Rolin, the founder of the Hospices de Beaune. Her dowry included approximately 60 acres of vineyards in Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton, and Volnay.

In the 19th century, the Bonneau du Martray family owned a few acres of vines whose heart and jewel were the entire Charlemagne climate in the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses.

Their son, Marie-Eugène Bonneau du Martray is an essential link in the history of the Domaine. He allowed the Domaine to go through the ups and downs of history without suffering: during the wars of 1870, 1914-18, phylloxera, and beyond. The action of this brilliant engineer during these dark hours preserved the integrity of the estate.

René Bonneau du Martray, son of Eugène, also experienced his share of historical events. Born in 1886, he suffered the horrors of the two world wars; he suffered physically from them for the rest of his life. Despite the difficulties he endured, René took his responsibility at the head of the family vineyard very seriously.

René Bonneau du Martray did not have children, so he bequeathed the property to his niece Alice Colonna de Giovellina, who married Jean le Bault de la Morinière.

The arrival of Jean le Bault de la Morinière at the Domaine in 1969 marked the beginning of international recognition for the Bonneau du Martray wines. Sales were organised in France as well as in foreign countries; the Domaine's two great wines were present on the most prestigious tables. Devoted entirely to his family vineyard, Jean worked hard to continue the work of his predecessors, including constructing walls and ditches to fight erosion in the vineyard. He introduced temperature control in the cellar to guarantee fermentations under the best conditions, an innovative approach at the time. From the vineyard - with a qualitative renewal of the vines - to the cellar, Jean le Bault de la Morinière converted Domaine Bonneau du Martray into a reference among the producers of great Burgundy wines.

His son, Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, joined the Domaine in 1994.

Since 1997, Jean-Charles gradually oriented the Domaine towards organic farming, and its first biodynamic trials were launched in the fall of 2004. The full conversion to biodynamic was completed in 2011. It is Jean-Charles' firm belief that "we are accountable for a better understanding of the complexity of the environment in order to preserve its integrity, vitality and diversity". Jean-Charles' focus on quality in the vineyard and cellar had an immediate impact, reinforcing Bonneau du Martray's status with the most discerning wine connoisseur around the globe.

Five generations have built upon the others' successes, each participating through the ages to raise the Domaine to the highest rank, worthy of Emperor Charlemagne.

E. Stanley Kroenke, a passionate Burgundy lover who owns renowned vineyards in California, became the proprietor of Domaine Bonneau du Martray in 2017. As only the fifth owner in the Domaine's history, E. Stanley Kroenke now pursues the same quest for perfection and excellence that was started by Charlemagne, the Benedictine monks, and families Bonneau du Martray and Le Bault de la Morinière.

2014 Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Corton ...

2014 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Price: $1137.00                        Your Price: $1000.56

(93-95 Points) A highly restrained nose features notes of cool and ultra-pure citrus, green apple, white flowers, herbal tea and wet stone. There is a distinctly racy mouth feel to the super intense and well-delineated medium weight plus flavors that are strikingly focused on the chiseled, clean, dry and moderately austere finale that delivers stunningly good complexity. I very much like this understated effort as it is an exercise in harmony and refinement and while there is the usual taut muscularity of a classic Corton-Charlemagne, it certainly doesn't lack for elegance either.  Burghound, Review Date: 06/2016

2020 Bonneau Du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru MAGNUM

Price: $2075.00                        Your Price: $1826.00

(97 Points) As I wrote earlier this year, Bonneau du Martray's 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp Anjou pear, peach and nectarine mingled with white flowers, clear honey, nutmeg, mint and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's bright and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core and a long, saline finish. Seamless, intense and complete, this elegant, precise white Burgundy is built for the cellar. (WK) Wine Advocate, Review Date: 07/2023

2021 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Magnum

Price: $2100.00                        Your Price: $1848.00

The 2021 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is a magnificent representation of the renowned Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, France. With a pale golden hue, this wine exudes elegance and sophistication. On the nose, delicate aromas of white flowers, citrus, and hints of oak mingle together, creating a complex and enticing bouquet. On the palate, flavours of ripe pear, green apple, and lemon are accompanied by a subtle minerality and a touch of vanilla. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, with a balanced acidity that adds a refreshing lift to the wine. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a lasting impression.

2022 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune

Price: $1050.00                        Your Price: $924.00

(97 Points) After a tasting of the components of the parcel-by-parcel approach the winery takes, a representative blend leaves no doubt that this will be an epic vintage for Bonneau du Martray. It is a wine of richness and depth, with aromas and flavours ranging from citrus to ripe apple and nectarine, and complex nuances of flint, beeswax, smoke, and hay. The texture is dense but a lively acidity carries the wine to a thrillingly long finish. Ideally one would wait seven to 10 years to open this wine; it will certainly last another 30 beyond that at least.  Robert Parker Wine Advocate

A bit about Screaming Eagle:

What is the most sought after of all the California Cult wines?  Screaming Eagle has the killer name along with the numbers to back it up according to Robert Parker Jr. in the Wine Advocate.  The combination of extremely low production and high praise from the nations leading wine critic has lead the price of this collectible into the stratosphere.  We show this wine every year at our annual California cult tasting and this year the 2001 was the show stopper and many felt it was the wine of the night.  This is the first time that we have ever been able to amass enough of this wine to send out an offering.

Screaming Eagle is one of Napa Valley's smallest wineries, and a California cult wine favorite. The little stone winery (a 12- by 18-foot stone building off Silverado Trail) is perched on a rocky hillside in the Oakville Appellation overlooking the vineyard planted in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in 65% new French oak barrels in a small cave for almost two years. Annual production is approximately 500 cases with most wine sold directly to consumers via a mailing list, however you can buy it here.

The winery was founded in 1989 with its first release of approximately 200 cases of the 1992 vintage. Owner Jean Phillips, who purchased the 60-acre property in 1986, along with wine maker Heidi Peterson Barrett have created a cabernet sauvignon that is sought after by collectors and wine lovers alike, these hard to find wines are often available only in limited quantities.

In March of 2006 the winery was sold to Charles Banks, a money manager for NBA players and other athletes, and Stanley Kroenke, owner of the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche hockey team.  The new owners have announced that they have hired famed vineyard manager David Abreu to replant some of the vineyard. It appears that they are also hiring a new winemaker - Andy Erickson.  Andy has worked at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Staglin Family and is currently making wine for Hartwell and Arietta.  He also has his own wine label Favia.  Heidi Peterson Barrett will stay on to complete the vintages she has started through 2005.

In 2001 at the Napa Valley Wine Auction a collector paid $650,000.00 (US) for eight extremely rare 3.0L bottles of Screaming Eagle Wine spanning from 1992 to 1999.

Today, Screaming Eagle remains one of the most compelling estates in Napa Valley. The winery is now under full control of Stan Kroenke. Consultant Andy Erickson is no longer involved in the property but his protege Nic Gislason appears to have the passion and talent to take things to the next level, as impossible a task as that may seem given the profound quality of the wines here.

(95 Points) Floral and silky in the glass, with lovely forward fruit, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a decidedly delicate, elegant wine. It offers terrific freshness and verve. Floral and citrus overtones lift a core of red-toned fruit. The low-ish tannins of the vintage are evident in the wine's mid-weight structure. In the 2022, it's the wine's freshness I admire most. I imagine the 2022 is a rare Screaming Eagle that will drink well with minimal cellaring. (AG)  Review Date: 12/2024, Vinous

(98-100 Points) Tasted from barrel, the 2021 Screaming Eagle dazzles from start to finish. Dark, savory and explosive, the 2021 deftly marries power and finesse like few vintages I can remember tasting. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, grilled herbs, leather and a kick of spice all build in this wonderfully vibrant, layered Screaming Eagle. There's plenty of tannin, but it is elegantly built into the wine's fabric. (AG) - Vinous Media

(99 Points) Balanced, polished, seamless, and elegant—and just what you’d expect from this Oakville estate, humbly delivered in 2020. I had the chance to taste this release at Screaming Eagle on a cool, rainy day at the end of March 2023. It possessed the freshness of the air outside, coupled with the warmth of the vintage, offering expressive blue and violet wildflowers, boysenberry fruit, graphite, cedarwood and spearmint and beautiful loamy earth notes. Medium-bodied and flush with the purity of red crunchy cherry and plum fruit augmented by undercurrents of blue and black-toned notes as well this vintage. All this is framed by a rich tapestry of long, silky, layered tannins and the finish is punctuated by rose petal notes. This wine is unquestionably in the running for an upgrade to a 100-point score. It's a dynamic, expressive, and gorgeous showing from the challenging vintage. The team’s unyielding effort to bring harmony and balance to the vineyard comes together in the glass. It's an example of how precision farming and precision. Winemaking can capture the essence of a winery's signature style. (JC)  Decanter

(100 Points) The 2019 Screaming Eagle is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse that stand apart from the generally more potent style of so many wines in this vintage. Deep, sensual, and beautifully layered, the 2019 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. A whole range of red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, dried herb, and blood orange accents give the 2019 its vivid, wonderfully detailed personality. Because of its price, both on release and in the secondary market, Screaming Eagle is the most talked about wine in Napa Valley. It is hype or not? All I can say is that I was very fortunate to drink a number of older vintages during lockdown and all those wines lived up to their reputations.  Vinous Media

Medium-bodied with jaw-dropping elegance, the palate is finely textured and yet built like a brick house with a super taut backbone and exquisitely knit acidity. The intense black and red fruit flavors are accented by layers of mineral and floral notions, finishing with incredible length and depth. Undeniably stunning.  Wine Advocate

(99 Points) A very vertical wine with creamy, silky tannins running through the center of the wine and plenty of berries, herbs and currants intertwined with the tannins. Some tile and licorice undertones. It's medium-to full-bodied. Excellent complexity. Extremely long. Svelte and racy. Drink after 2025. Only 600 magnums made. -James Suckling

2016 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $5500.00                        Sale Price: $3550.00                       Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) Blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackberries, black cherries and wild blueberries with notions of fragrant earth, garrigue, lavender, Sichuan pepper and dried leaves. Medium-bodied with signature elegance and finesse, it’s the incredibly fine, oh-so-pixelated tannins that help to define the signature of this vineyard, beautifully supporting the elegant fruit, finishing with great poise. This is a very sensuous, pensive style and not for those seeking a full-on blockbuster but rather will greatly pleasure lovers of wines with quiet intensity and subtle depth. Note that this was a tank sample, due to be bottled within a week.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(100 Points) The 2016 Screaming Eagle is a positively stunning wine. An intense bouquet gives way to a wine of explosive energy and huge textural depth. Graphite, crushed rocks, menthol, sage and dark spice open up gradually in this reticent, brooding Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 is a towering, statuesque wine of the very highest level. That is the good news. The slightly less good news is that it will need a number of years in bottle to be at its very best. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. The 2016 literally does scream, with tons of varietal Cabernet aromatics, flavors and structural drive. In a word: magnificent! (Antonio Galloni) VinoUS Media Review

Price: $15500.00                      Sale Price: $8500.00                       Quantity in Stock: 1

(97 Points) The 2014 Screaming Eagle is an 880-case blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. The telltale sign of this iconic wine is its extraordinary purity of crème de cassis fruit, which is displayed abundantly in the 2014. It doesn’t quite have the structure and mass of the 2013, but this sexy, up-front, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine is seamlessly constructed, full-bodied, and has a long finish with silky tannins. This seems to float across that palate with that great fruit purity that is a characteristic of Screaming Eagle. Drink it over the next 25+ years. -Wine Advocate

(97 Points)  The 2013 Screaming Eagle flagship wine is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. As one might expect, the purity of the cassis, which is always a hallmark of this estate and wine, is well-displayed in this beauty. Dense purple in color, it offers up some floral notes intermixed with damp earth, blackcurrant jam, blackberry and hints of licorice and incense. This reminds me somewhat of the 2010 Screaming Eagle. Full-bodied, rich, but perfectly balanced, it’s another terrific example of this iconic estate. It should drink well for 30 or more years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(100 points)  The perfect 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Screaming Eagle is composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Made in the classic, iconic Screaming Eagle style that the original proprietress, Jean Philipps, first showcased in the early 1990s, before the winery was sold to Stan Kroenke, the inky/purple-colored, seamless 2012 possesses an extraordinary set of aromatics consisting of pure blackcurrant liqueur, licorice, acacia flowers, graphite and a subtle hint of new oak. Full-bodied, opulent and voluptuous, this profound wine is as prodigious as I thought it would be last year when tasted from barrel. It should age effortlessly for 20 or more years.  eRobertParker.com #215, Oct 2014

Dense, rich and impressive, the early drinking charm of the 2011 vintage gives it immediate appeal. It should keep for 10-15 years.  Wine Advocate #209, Oct 2013

2007 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa

Price: $5500.00                        Your Price: $4840.00                       Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) As impossible as it might seem, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon takes things to another level. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endless layers of fruit as this rich, voluptuous wine blossoms on the palate. Full-bodied and seductive, the 2007 conquers all of the senses with its head spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bit more restrained next to Napa Valley’s other heavy hitters, yet the pedigree of this opulent vintage comes through in spades. A kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors flows through to the creamy, textured finish. I have tasted the 2007 several times recently. It was always beenY.perfect. My only issue with the 2007 is that it appears to be shutting down just a touch. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

I have had a number of fabulous tastings at Screaming Eagle, but this was one of the most memorable. The biggest news at Screaming Eagle is the release of a second wine, a project that has been in the works for a number of years. Owner Stan Kroenke and his team wanted to make sure their new wine was up to the estate’s standards, and have only released the first vintages over the last few months. I tasted all four vintages of Screaming Eagle’s second label, Second Flight, next to Screaming Eagle itself, which allowed for a fascinating set of comparisons of both wines across a number of vintages. Like its big brother, Second Flight is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, but here the Merlot plays a much more significant role. Regardless, what comes through most is the signature of these sites as seen through the lenses of the respective vintages. Readers might also enjoy taking a look at a recent video I shot with Winemaker Nic Gislason during the 2012 harvest that we recently posted on our site.

Price: $875.00                           Sale Price: $695.00                         Quantity in Stock: 1

(94 Points)  Deep garnet colored, the 2011 Second Flight (a blend of 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc) offers up a gorgeous perfume of wilted roses and violets over a core of blackberry tart, raspberry preserves and kirsch with subtle baking spices and garrigue notions. Medium to full-bodied with a solid frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, it has wonderfully perfumed layers and an exotic spice-laced finish. It has a surprising amount of weight and concentration for this cool, rainy vintage. Winemaker Nick Gislason informed me that the last pick was on November 1 this year—which is extremely late! But this later harvest clearly paid off when you consider how ripe the tannins are on this beauty. (LPB)   Review Date: 04/2018 Wine Advocate
