An Evening with Jean Charles Boisset Featuring Wines from Raymond and Flora Springs Wineries - Happy Hour in the Wine Bar at 6pm and Dinner in the Wine Cave at 7:30pm

My books are like water; those of the great geniuses are wine. (Fortunately) everybody drinks water.

Mark Twain

Hey wine is 85% water and I like the comparison between wine and geniuses!!

Speaking of wine genius… we have one of the most interesting men in the wine business coming to pay us a visit here at Wine Watch.

Jean Charles Boisset was just named wine personality of the year by the Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2024!!  This is a title that I bequeathed to JCB many years ago!!   I remember taking Jean Charles on sales calls back when I worked with Republic National Distributing as a sales representative.   We put together many wine tasting experiences in the past 30+ years, it is always a special night when we have JCB in the house.

The Boisset family is one of the largest landholders in Burgundy and Jean Charles married Gina Gallo, making this rather important wine family of France now joined by marriage to the largest family-owned winery in the world.

Join us as we welcome Jean Charles back to South Florida for an incredible tasting that will feature a vertical of two of the families Napa Valley wineries Raymond and Flora Springs.  Flora Springs is the first winery that Jean Charles and Gina purchased together for their daughters.

You have a chance to meet JCB for a happy hour tasting at 6pm which includes a tasting of the JCB line of caviar and all the current releases from Flora Springs and Raymond wineries.  There are only 30 spots available for the Happy Hour tasting from 6pm – 7:30pm.

Then at 7:30 we will be sitting down to dinner which will feature older vintage wines from these two wineries, there are only 12 seats available for dinner and if you sign up for the dinner it includes the Happy Hour event.  Jean Charles and I have been friends for over 30 years.  I have visited every winery in the Boisset Family Collection we will have many great stories to tell this evening!!  This is a night you do not want to miss!!

The history of Flora Springs winery dates back to the 1880's.  Those years witnessed the real heyday of the California wine industry, and over 200 wineries flourished in the Napa Valley.  Flora Springs is housed in a refurbished old stone winery built by Scottish immigrants who planted vineyards and produced wines on the property a century ago.  Phylloxera, earthquakes, and Prohibition managed to destroy the great promise of the Napa Valley in less than three decades.  The old winery was one of the many casualties and became one of the "ghost wineries" that speckled the Napa Valley landscape after the conclusion of that glorious era.

The property was eventually purchased by one of the "survivors", Louis Martini; and he lived there until his death in 1974.  Three years later in 1977, Jerry and Flora Komes bought the huge stone winery in the western foothills of St. Helena.  Their plan was to use the harvest of the vineyards as a source for retirement income, but the romantic prospects of producing their own wines lured the rest of the family into the operation.  Son John, daughter Julie, and their respective families were soon involved.  John, who was a general contractor, became manager of the winery and also took charge of the rebuilding and remodeling.  His sister Julie Garvey and her husband Pat gave up careers in education to fill the respective roles of marketing director and vineyard manager.  The group named the winery after the family matriarch, Flora Komes, and the fresh water springs that flow from the hillside.  The first harvest in 1978 was strictly a family affair; about 250 cases of wine were picked, crushed, and bottled entirely by the family for their private consumption.  In 1979 winemaker Ken Deis, who had been an assistant to the great Joseph Heitz, was brought on board to launch the first vintage Chardonnay.  A scant 250 cases were produced that year, but the wine received impressive critical acclaim - including a Gold Medal at the 1981 LA County Fair.  Another first release Chardonnay also won a gold at that fair - the legendary 1979 Acacia "Winery Lake".  Acacia seemed to get all the attention back in those days; maybe some people didn't take Flora Springs seriously; others may have thought the gold medal was a fluke.  However, in the intervening years, Flora Springs has quietly emerged as one of California's leading Chardonnay producers (and, we might add, has surpassed Acacia in quality).

The winery now owns over 350 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyard spread out over six different ranches.  The Komes ranch is located at the northern border of the Rutherford Appellation and the southern boundary of the St. Helena Appellation and is the home of Flora Springs Winery and many of their red wines. The vineyard naturally adds complexity to the wines through its diverse soil types, varying exposures and elevations as well as varying clones and vine age. This is truly one of the jewels of the Napa Valley.  The Crossroads Ranch is part of the renowned Oakville Appellation. Afternoon breezes and early morning fogs that course along Conn Creek conspire with distinct soils to make this a very unique vineyard.  The Cypress Ranch, otherwise known as, “Wild Boar Vineyard”, is a vineyard that Jerry Komes recently declared- "a dream come true."  Fifteen years ago, this location was all about potential.  Now the Komes consider it a huge success.  Pope Valley, located in the northeast corner of the Napa Valley, is the last frontier of Napa because of its lack of water and more continental influences.  The Cypress Ranch, however, has an abundance of water (3 lakes) and the benefit of strong afternoon breezes that cool it down in the heat of the day.  Recently, they named a section of this ranch, "Wild Boar Vineyard" after the marauding boars that invade the vineyard and enjoy grazing on the tasty grapes.  The Lavender Hill Vineyard is located at the end of Bayview in the Carneros Appellation.   It is a lush hill knoll, part of an alluvial fan, that produces small, flavorful clusters from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are planted here.  Carneros because of its proximity to the San Pablo Bay and the almost constant breezes that blow off the bay is an ideal place to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  The P & J vineyard has been a prime source of the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay and Estate Chardonnay since the very first vintage in 1978.  Located adjacent to the Napa River, it benefits from the cool breezes and summer fogs that follow the river from the San Pablo Bay.  Frequently, the fruit from this vineyard is the last white grapes picked which indicates a slower maturation and therefore results in a well developed fruit character.  Last but certainly not least, we have the Windfall Vineyard which is located in the Rutherford Appellation of the Napa Valley on Bella Oaks Lane.  Its soils are rocky bale loam and seem remarkably well suited to the production of world class Merlot.  The grapes from this vineyard are intense and produce an incredibly dense and almost Cabernet-like wine.

Flora Springs, with an amazing array of prime vineyard land in Napa Valley, still only uses about 30% of the fruit from these vineyards.  They have the pick of the litter every year and then sell the remaining 70% to some of the biggest names in Napa Valley.  They produce a variety of wines in addition to Chardonnay, which is what made the winery famous initially.  They make a very crisp, Graves-styled Sauvignon Blanc, and a white wine from very old Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown at the Crossroads Vineyard, called Soliloquy.  The Cabernet comes in a few styles as well, a fairly elegant Cabernet very approachable upon release is the Napa bottling (sometimes called St. Rutherford), the Rutherford Reserve is a monster of a wine that is more reminiscent of a French Bordeaux than a big, rich California Cabernet, and the winery has recently added a single vineyard Cabernet from the Wild Boar Vineyard.

In 1970 Roy Raymond Sr. and his two sons, Roy Jr. and Walter, purchased 90 acres in the center of the Napa Valley just off Zinfandel Lane and founded Raymond Vineyards.  The first three years were devoted to the development of the estate vineyard, and the first grape harvest was in 1974.  The Raymond reputation for high quality was quickly established, and the winery production has steadily increased since the first vintage.

Although their own winery was not founded until 1971, the family roots in the wine industry go back much further.  Roy Raymond Sr. began working in Napa Valley's Beringer winery in 1933 and married Martha Jane Beringer in 1936.  Martha Jane's grandfather and great-uncles, Jacob and Frederick Beringer, emigrated from Germany in the 1800's and founded Beringer Winery in 1876.  As direct descendants of Jacob Beringer, Roy Jr. and Walter are continuing the legacy of fine winemaking from an historic Napa Valley family.

The Raymond family has worked very closely together in establishing their winery, and they are known throughout the Napa Valley as hard workers.   Although Roy Sr. has officially retired, he still maintains a busy schedule and quite often lends a hand around the winery.   Roy Jr. and Walter now supervise a full staff of vineyard and winery personnel, but their touch is very evident in both the product and atmosphere, as well as the positive reputation of Raymond Vineyards.

Several years ago Kirin Brewing Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese brewery purchased a major interest in the Raymond Winery for an undisclosed price.  Under the agreement, Walter Raymond and Roy Raymond, Jr., retained ownership interests in the winery as well as full control of winemaking and marketing.   Walter Raymond remained as winemaker and winery manager and Roy Raymond, Jr., continued his position as marketing director and vineyard manager.  The Raymond brothers, in announcing the agreement, pointed out that the important factors that determined their decision to sell an interest in the winery were the long term security of the family and ability to remain fully involved in the winery in both an ownership and management capacity.  At the time of the sale Walter Raymond said: "The infusion of capital also will be helpful in achieving the dual goals of ever improving quality as well as increased production made necessary as a result of the demand for Raymond wines in the marketplace."

After the Kirin purchase the pace quickened at Raymond Vineyards.  In 1992 and 1993 Raymond began a twelve million dollar upgrade of equipment and buildings that has positioned the company at the forefront of California wineries in energy efficiency, quality, and future planning.  In the fall of 1992 Raymond completed construction of a new production building which added approximately 74,800 square feet of working space to the existing winery on Zinfandel Lane.  The second phase of the construction included the barrel aging and barrel storage areas.  It utilizes approximately 8,000 barrels for oak aging with a storage capacity of 420,000 gallons.  Although often referred to as an "expansion", the new building actually consolidated the Raymond production to the Zinfandel Lane property and eliminated the need for custom crushing at other facilities.  The independent temperature controls on fermentation tanks earned Raymond the largest energy rebate paid to a California business in 1993. Raymond is now largely self-sufficient with over 450 acres of estate vineyards planted in three locations.  The original estate vineyard is on Zinfandel Lane in mid Napa Valley with 74 acres of vines planted to cabernet, chardonnay, and merlot.  Another 250-acre parcel in the Jameson Canyon area of Napa Valley is under development with some eighty acres already planted to pinot noir, chardonnay, and merlot.  The Jameson Canyon vineyard is located in southern Napa County and receives the direct influence of cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay.  Raymond also owns 300 acres of vineyards planted entirely to chardonnay in Monterey County.

The family quickly earned acclaim for their elegant wines with a beautiful balance of finesse, power and complexity. Five generations of the Raymond family imbued the winery with a sense of its deep roots in the Napa Valley and a commitment to honor those roots, the estate and the family tradition through every wine produced.

Today that family tree is entwined with Burgundy’s esteemed Boisset Collection. Jean-Charles Boisset has a history of elevating wineries to new heights, and Raymond Vineyards is no exception.  The winery brought on Napa Valley veteran Winemaker Stephanie Putnam to oversee winemaking, while Vineyard Manager Sophie Drucker has transitioned the estate vineyards to organic and Biodynamic® farming practices, a hallmark of Boisset Collection properties worldwide. The winery has also renovated its tasting room and opened a number of new visitor offerings with a focus on educating consumers and providing a place for them to nurture a passion for wine.

Jean-Charles Boisset serves as president of Boisset Family Estates, one of the world’s leading family-owned wine companies, with wineries in Burgundy, Beaujolais, the Rhone Valley, the South of France, and expertise in French sparkling wines. Boisset’s August 2009 purchase of Raymond Vineyards expanded the company’s footprint in the New World, which already included properties in Canada and California’s Russian River Valley, making it one of the top twenty-five producers in the US.

Jean-Charles has been vital to the family firm’s expansion through organic growth and by building a collection of wineries that fit the family’s vision and share its values. He instituted the concept of the “viniculteur,” which redefined the company’s traditional role to encompass a closer, more active interest in all aspects of winegrowing to ensure sustainable farming practices and premium quality. He also elevated Jean-Claude Boisset, the founding winery bearing his father’s name, to new heights of quality, concentrating its activities on the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, limiting yields and practicing.

And each number has deep significance for Jean-Charles Boisset, the collection’s creator and namesake.  Both Jean-Charles and Andrew were born in 1969, the year that mankind went to the moon.  As such, 69 represents unlimited expression, freedom, creativity, intellectual revolution, artistry, and refinement. Of course, 69 is also a rosé brut based exclusively on pinot noir; a rosé that entwines masculinity and femininity.

Located in the heart of the Chablis region, just outside the village of Chablis, J. Moreau & Fils is nestled among the rolling, vineyard-covered hills for which the region is known. With almost two centuries of winemaking experience, J. Moreau & Fils truly captures Chablis’ terroir in each of its stunning wines. Our Chablis wines can be characterized by a lively minerality and a perfect balance between terroir, fruit, structure and texture, making our wines accessible in their youth while simultaneously possessing a great aging potential.

Though traces of a village from Neolithic times were discovered in Chablis, the town's real origins are to be found in Roman times. Chablis was named after the word "caplum", which means "ford" in Latin. The vineyards developed well in the 3rd century, thanks to the Roman Emperor Probus. Flowing gently through Chablis, the Serein River plays an important role as a climatic regulator, and helped to transport Chablis wines to the port of Auxerre, then to Paris and foreign countries, particularly to Belgium and England.

But the real expansion of the Chablis vineyard is due to the Cistercian Monks, the Abbey of Pontigny being quite close. At the end of the last century, phylloxera destroyed the whole vineyard, which explains the recent introduction of the Chardonnay varietal. Since the seventies, the vineyard has grown spectacularly, mainly because of the improvement of measures to fight against the spring frost.

In 1814 the young cooper Jean-Joseph Moreau settled in Chablis where he married the daughter of a local wine grower. The house of J. Moreau & Fils was thus created. After having been a pioneer in the Chablis region, J. Moreau & Fils has become one of the biggest Chablis producers over the years, as well as one of the oldest and most active négociants-éléveurs of the Chablis region, recognised for its know-how and the style of its wines which respect the terroir and are enjoyed today in over 80 countries.

The J. Moreau & Fils logo has always contributed to the recognition of the brand, and represents the original Porte Noël, reconstructed in the 18th century on the site of the town’s ancient fortifications.

A few of the company’s important dates :

1814: The company is founded by Jean MOREAU.

1920: The company exports its wines for the first time, to Great Britain.

1970: J. Moreau & Fils takes advantage of its privileged geographical location at the gateway to Burgundy to extend its range of wines to include those of the Loire and the Languedoc-Roussillon, which are carefully selected based on the company’s know-how and commitment to quality.

1976: Hiram Walker (Allied Domecq) buys J. Moreau & Fils and begins to develop its international distribution.

1997: J. Moreau & Fils, is bought by Boisset SA and has since belonged to "La Famille des Grands Vins".

Two hundred years of experience, the style of J. Moreau & Fils’ wines is a pure reflection of the terroir of Chablis. A long standing partnership with producers, strict control over the sanitary state of the grapes, along with the use of modern equipment from the receiving bin to the bottling line and a complex vinification process allow J. Moreau & Fils to offer high quality wines

For several decades, the house of J. Moreau & Fils has maintained close relationships with more than 50 vine growers, and has been involved in monitoring the estates, particularly during harvest and vinification.

Today, our quality control team conducts regular visits of all of the vineyards, more than 300 different parcels, and classifies them according to terroir, exposition, type of soil, and age of the vines. With an objective of better controlling yields and hygiene, we follow up on the pruning, treating, trimming and all other vine maintenance. Once the vines have flowered, our visits increase until harvest time so that we can follow the development of the grapes and bring them to optimum maturity, taking into account the nature of the parcels and climatic uncertainties. The harvest dates are set and a picking plan is defined so as to organise the work that needs to be done in the cellar.

The chosen grapes are crushed before being pressed, then put into the press. All precautions are taken to prevent the must from oxidising and to preserve the aromatic potential of the grapes. The free-run juice and the press-juice are then blended, then the must is carefully left to settle as this is what will give finesse to the wines, all the while avoiding the extraction of herbaceous essences.

The must is then lodged in the vat house in 10,500 Hl stainless steel tanks, where it undergoes alcoholic fermentation. This lasts from seven to ten days on average under controlled temperatures (18°C to 20°C) to produce aromatic, fat wines.Malolactic fermentation, whether total or partial depending on the vintage, is then promoted. The wines feed on the entire or fine lees, and are subjected, if necessary, to regular stirring. The wines are then racked and separated from the lees. The wines are lightly fined, three months after racking on average, so as not to strip the wines of their aromas and brilliance. Finally, the wines are refrigerated then filtered before being bottled. All of these steps are carried out under scrupulous attention to hygiene, from the receiving bin through to the bottling room.

A 45,000 Hl cellar gives us the room we need to be able to guarantee the homogeneity of quality from the first to the last bottle of the same vintage, and to preserve the characteristics of each wine’s origin.

Even though consumers’ tastes are changing and the wines, for the most part, are being drunk young and fruity, it is recommended to wait before tasting the prestigious appellations which have a firm structure and are better suited for ageing . For this reason, at J. Moreau & Fils, the Chablis Premiers Crus and Grands Crus are aged in the bottle for an average of two years before being put on the market, in order to enable their secondary aromas to develop which allows the wines to express their full potential.

Though traces of a village dating back to the Neolithic period have been found, the true origins of Chablis go back to Roman times. Its name comes from the term “Caplum” or “ford” in Latin. The vineyards flourished here in the 3rd century, after having been rehabilitated by the emperor Probus. The Serein river, which played an important role in regulating the climate, also allowed wines from Chablis to be transported to Auxerre and Paris. From the capital they were shipped abroad, to Flanders and England in particular. The vineyards owe their real blossoming however to the Cistercian movement with the Abbey of Pontigny nearby. Phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in the late 19th century, which explains the recent planting of the Chardonnay grape variety. Since 1970, the vineyards have been undergoing spectacular expansion as mixed farming is being abandoned in favor of viticulture. The vines are also resisting spring frosts more effectively.

Founded by a man named, Maire, for over 300 years, generations of Maires succeeded one another, strengthening the Maison’s expertise. For Domaine Henri Maire, the “Path to Gold” is an initiation to the richness and diversity of Jura wines. It starts with Côtes du Jura, which exalts the freshness of Chardonnay. It follows with Arbois, with its rich palette of wines, the use of Savagnin and the mysterious veil ageing. Considered to be one of the world’s greatest wines, Vin Jaune has a golden yellow color, hence its name.

(A negociant is a wine producer who purchases grapes from independent small growers and makes the wine in his own cellars.)  That has been no small accomplishment, for most people in the Burgundy wine trade are members of families that have been in place for centuries.  His headquarters in France is located in Nuits St. Georges.  Offices, warehouses, and winemaking facilities cover six acres of land; and the firm now produces over one million cases of wine annually.  In addition Boisset owns about twenty-seven acres of "premier cru" vineyards in Nuits St. Georges and Gevrey Chambertin.  Boisset has also bought out the properties of Charles Vienot (Nuits St. Georges), Lionel Bruck (Nuits St. Georges), and Thomas Bassot (Gevrey Chambertin).  His neighbors in France consider him very radical, for he started the business from nothing and has built it into a very profitable enterprise.  In an area where tradition and time-proven methods are sacrosanct, Boisset's high-tech winery with computers and automated winemaking equipment raises more than a few eyebrows.

Today, the next Generation Jean Charles Boisset has continued the family tradition in The Boisset Collection embraces audacity & innovation and unites Old World and New into the One World of Wine, offering an unparalleled exploration of terroir, heritage, vineyards and style.

Boisset is a family-owned collection of historic and unique wineries bound together by a common cause: authentic, terroir-driven wines in harmony with their history, their future and the land and people essential to their existence.  With more than twenty historical and prestigious wineries in the world’s preeminent terroirs, including the Côte d’Or, Beaujolais, Rhône Valley, California’s Russian River Valley and the Napa Valley, each house retains its unique history, identity, and style, and all are united in the pursuit of fine wines expressive of their terroir.

Boisset embraces its Franco-American roots with their vision that a spirit of collaboration and commitment to wine on both continents will transcend any divisions. They believe that the union of the two worlds of winemaking will deepen their shared appreciation of their distinctness, diversity and unity, and enrich and enliven our worlds. We are inspired to think that together, we can unite two continents and two cultures around wine… Oceans may separate us, but wine unites us!

More than seventeen centuries of combined history unite the wineries of Boisset. Cistercian monks planted the vineyards of Le Clos Vougeot in 1110, inspiring Domaine de la Vougeraie to this day. Bouchard Aîné & Fils has built its family reputation in Beaune since 1750. Buena Vista Winery is California’s first premium winery, founded in Sonoma in 1857. These are just a few examples of the remarkable history of the Boisset Collection. Deepening the legacies of each of its estates is at the core of Boisset’s mission.

Founded in 1865, Mommessin has been bringing the world excellent wines from Beaujolais and Burgundy since it began exporting in 1890. Through our own properties as well as long-term contracts with growers, some over 100 years old, we are able to consistently bring you exceptional wines of quality. The story behind the key: in 1889, Mommessin acquired La Grange Saint-Pierre, several ancient stone buildings in Mâcon that originally belonged to the Abbey of Cluny. The abbey’s emblem, the Key of Saint Peter, became an enduring symbol at the Mommessin winery, one that can be seen today on all our Mommessin wines.
