On Friday, January 9th we will have our first wine tasting of 2026 and we are beginning the year with a quick study of the 2023 vintage from Burgundy.   We have one of the great Domaines of Burgundy on the table tonight with wine covering the entire range of village, 1er Cru and Grand Cru from Domaine Rapet.

Located between Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, in Pernand Vergelesses, Burgundy, Domaine Rapet develop great wines located around the prestigious hill of Corton.   This historic family estate was created in 1765. Vincent, who is in charge today, produces modern style wines, well vinified and representative of their terroir. Some years of cellaring become them well and the prices of the different cuvées remain very reasonable. So in short, we are talking about a reliable address for red as well as white wines.

A bit about the 2023  vintage in Burgundy from the Wine Advocate:

“If one characteristic defines the 2023 vintage in Burgundy, it’s abundance. For Pinot Noir, this was a year of abundant yields, for many the highest since 1999; and for Chardonnay, where the crop was more measured, 2023 is a year of abundant flesh and texture. At their best, in both colors, these are wines of demonstrative charm and immediacy—and sometimes of surprising structure for so copious a crop. However, while the 2023s are more consistent than I had feared they might be, this is not a homogenous vintage. In red, dilution, elevated levels of volatile acidity and earthy, vegetal flavors are potential pitfalls. While most whites are well-balanced, at least for near-term consumption, some are deficient in structure and cut. 2023, in other words, is not a vintage to buy blind.

Consumers who taste the wines for themselves are likely to experience perplexity. How can soft, dilute reds coexist with concentrated, structured wines in the same vintage—sometimes even in the same cellar? How was it that some producers had to chaptalize, whereas others routinely attained 14% natural alcohol? Why are some wines uninspiring while others are exceptional? Indeed, tasting the 2023s, I frequently had the impression that I was encountering not one vintage, but rather two or three. The explanation lies in the dynamics of the growing season in the Côte d’Or.

Pinot Noir’s fecundity in 2023 has its origins in the summer of 2022, when inflorescence primordia (which become next year’s flowers) formed in ideal conditions, creating the potential for an abundant crop in 2023. Flowering, which began in late May 2023, was underway in earnest by early June, again in ideal conditions; so those flowers enjoyed a very high rate of fertilization. The absence of hydric constraints at fruit set, in turn, permitted rapid cell division, making for larger berries. In other words, there were more bunches than usual, with more berries, and those berries were bigger.

Pinot Noir clusters typically weigh around 100 grams in Burgundy, but in 2023, that figure was 30% higher. Chardonnay, which flowers earlier than Pinot Noir, did not experience such ideal conditions for pollination, and both yields and cluster weights were more conventional—along similar lines to 2022 and 2020. Readers interested in pursuing the subject of how yields are quantified and their ramifications for wine quality are invited to read my essay on this subject published last year.

Growers adapted to nature’s abundance in different ways. Those habituated to pruning late and debudding hard always produce more moderate but more consistent yields from year to year. In 2023, these approaches were often complemented by green harvesting.  That permitted producers to remove any touching bunches that might otherwise have succumbed to rot and, when performed late, to eliminate any bunches lagging in maturation. Some even went to the labor-intensive extreme of eliminating bunches’ shoulders to reduce cluster size. As ever, timing is critical, as the bunches that remain can swell to compensate for an excessively early green harvest.

The growing season in which the vines’ reproductive cycle—and the Côte’s vignerons’ responses—unfolded was hot but also humid, with regular showers. In July, summer thunderstorms brought hail in several locations along the Côte, though its impact was inconsequential aside from some parts of south-central Meursault. By early August, the weather cooled, veraison dragged on, and it was unclear if the large crop would ever fully ripen. Botrytis and acid rot were already identifiable in certain parcels, and cloudy, rainy skies for another few weeks could easily have delivered a disastrous vintage.

That eventuality, however, was avoided thanks to a late-August heat wave, followed by a second one in the second week of September. When combined with the inch of rainfall that fell on August 28, the heat and sunlight were decisive, unleashing a rapid acceleration in ripening. Sugar accumulation combined with dehydration saw some fruit increase by as much as 1% potential alcohol in three days. It was in these conditions that harvest took place, and whether growers picked before, during or after the September heat wave could deliver very different wines, ranging from light and vegetal to brooding and muscular.

Chardonnay, with a smaller crop, advanced even faster, and many growers saw pHs rise as rapidly as sugars, precipitating earlier-than-anticipated picking. Some opted to acidify their musts to correct perceived imbalances. Many growers began picking whites at the end of August. The red harvest was more protracted, and parcels didn’t always comport themselves in the usual manner; but by mid-September, the end was in sight for most domaines. Aligoté, unusually ripe and golden, followed hard on the heels of Pinot Noir.

The warm conditions during harvest, especially the week of September 4, induced many estates to stop picking by 1 p.m. Many are now equipped with cold chambers or refrigerated reefers that help to chill the fruit before it is processed. Sorting, whether in the vines or in the winery, was critical, as corridors of acid rot, sunburn, desiccation and insect damage all needed to be studiously eliminated.

Some growers performed tank bleeds (saignée), though since the berries’ size was owing to cell division rather than swelling from late-season rain, its impact on the finished wines is difficult to ascertain. Lack of space in vats, as well as often-limited stem lignification, prompted many to reduce or eliminate their usual percentages of whole bunches. Fermentations began rapidly, but fully completing them could be challenging, something that can open the door to microbial spoilage, requiring vigilance. And above-average pHs meant that similar vigilance has been required during maturation.

What results does all this deliver in the glass? As we have seen, the 2023 red Burgundies exhibit a wide range of styles, but the best producers have crafted velvety, fleshy wines that are suave and sensual. The late-season heat wave lends them a little more sweetness and sometimes even structure than other recent abundant years such as 2017, but nor do the 2023s attain the consistent extremes of almost rhodanien ripeness that has characterized years such as 2018. While the quality-minded selection of domaines included in this report naturally gives a skewed perception of the vintage, it has certainly produced many lovely Burgundies that will delight consumers with their broad drinking windows.

The 2023 white Burgundies are more consistent. In style, the wines are generally rather rich and flamboyant, with unctuous textures and sweet fruit. These qualities, which were historically prized in years such as 1992, 1990 and 1989, are today out of fashion; but when they are united with good freshness and enlivening structuring dry extract, the results can be compelling. For those producers who adhere to a traditional élevage, a second winter on the lees—whose effects are too late to be accounted for in the impressions recorded in the accompanying tasting notes—is already bringing enhanced tension. Comparisons are odious, but a broader, more open-knit version of 2015 might help readers imagine the style of the 2023s for themselves.

Meanwhile, the 2022 vintage is performing well in bottle. The reds are in many cases showing a bit more structure than they did from barrel, with rich but balanced profiles that avoid the extremes of years such as 2020 and 2018. The whites have also tightened up, in many cases taking on a more reductive profile, and tend to surpass even the positive impressions I formed of them from barrel. In the Côte de Beaune in particular, 2022 is shaping up to be a superb vintage for Chardonnay and Aligoté.

And what of the market? Burgundy hasn’t been immune to the recent slackening in fine-wine prices, though the region continues to be impacted less than others. With the derisory 2024 harvest on the horizon, smaller even than frost-ravaged 2016, only a few growers have reduced prices, even if few have actually increased them. For now, 2023’s copiousness combined with a cooler market should at least reduce pressure on allocations and bring us the closest we have been to a buyers’ market for a decade. But if futures sales in Bordeaux are about arbitrage, in Burgundy they’re about access, so that effect is likely to continue to be limited.

It is also likely that 2023’s unusual abundance will continue to be the exception to the trend. Last year, I underlined issues relating to the 161-49 C rootstock. Readers may be aware that, beginning in 1971, in the face of vineyards suffering from serious viral disease, the French government launched a program to select and propagate virus-free clones. Widely adopted in the following years, today, many of Burgundy’s best producers prefer proprietary massal selections to clones for their greater genetic diversity and adaptability to a changing climate.

What’s less well-known, however, is that the all-important rootstocks upon which these selections are planted are mandatorily clonal selections, and since the early 1980s, the rootstock of choice for high-quality plantings in Burgundy was 161-49 C. Fully 85% of the production of 161-49 C has been reproduced from two cloned individuals. And these clones are now going into decline, producing diminishing yields and then dying. Currently, only 0.8% of the Côte d’Or’s vineyards are replanted each year, but there’s no way that figure won’t have to increase by the end of the decade. The consequences for production of the best appellations are likely to be considerable.”  The Wine Advocate

(94 points) "Delightful. Slightly restrained on the initial attack, but with time, lovely aromas of ripe apple, pear and apricot open on the palate. The texture is creamy and dense, yet there's impressive freshness for the vintage, drawing the wine to a lingering finish. The grapes are from two parcels in the upper portion of the climat, nearly all planted in the 1960s. The wines are ageing in one 12hl oak upright and large casks (20% new). Organic. 2026-2040. (11/11/24)" Charles Curtis, MW (Decanter)

2023 DOMAINE RAPET PERNAND VERGELESSES BLANC LES COMBOTTES

Price: $72.00                             Your Price: $63.36                           Quantity in Stock: 13

A great Burgundy white wine from the Pernand-Vergelesses commune. The grape variety used is Chardonnay. The vines are newly planted, dating from the early 2000's, on new parcels facing south-west, quite difficult to cultivate because of the very steep slope.

The name "Combottes" is a diminutive of "combe", coomb, which refers to the valley-like character of this parcel.

White wine vinification : we bring in the grapes in small crates to keep them intact. The pressing is carried out with a pneumatic press which is less damaging to the grapes. The whole grapes are placed in the press and the pressing lasts for two hours. After 24 hours' settling at low temperatures, the grape juice is transferred into barrels to ferment, the proportion of new barrels being 30 %. Ageing on lees with stirring lasts until July and the wine is bottled after 12 months of ageing.

The hillside is situated in the "climat"* "Les plantes des champs et combottes" and faces south-west extending from the village; the soil here is white, marly and fairly light. The rows are short with ditches in between to limit erosion.

Le Pernand – Vergelesses "Les Combottes" is an eye-catcher because of it's beautiful colour with a golden tint. It is fresh, lively and elegant and has a delicate bouquet of fresh fruit developing spicy notes with hints of honey and gun-flint when mature. This wine is at it's best between 3 and 5 years. Served at 12°C, it accompanies an elegant starter, a mellow goat cheese in aumônière-purse, stewed langoustine, gambas, fine fish and bleu de Bresse-cheese.

2023 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Magnum

Price: $755.00                           Your Price: $664.40

(96 points) "The wonderful Corton-Charlemagne from Rapet offers pronounced apricot and quince fruit with a lemon-peel edge. The texture is rich and dense, yet balanced by a surprisingly crisp acidity for the vintage. The grapes from En Charlemagne, Chaumes et La Voierosse and Les Combes were picked on 11 September, right before the rain, and pressed as whole clusters before fermentation, mostly in 250-litre casks with a bit of foudre and one amphora. Ideally, I would age this at least 10 years and enjoy it over the next 40. Drinking Window: 2035-2075. (11/11/24)" Charles Curtis, MW (Decanter)

Domaine Rapet Père & Fils Bourgogne En ...

2023 Domaine Rapet bourgogne Rouge en Bully

Price: $54.00                             Your Price: $47.52

A great Burgundy red wine, the grape variety used is Pinot Noir. The Bourgogne rouge is grown at an altitude of 350 meters on the slope facing les Hautes-Côtes on the locality named La Grande Corvée de Bully. The soil here is marly with a shallow top-layer.

Bully was an ancient property, no longer existing, which at the time belonged to Abbaye de Maizières. The term Bulliaco from 925, derived from "bubbles", refers to the existence of a gushing spring (Fontaine Bully) close by. La corvée, a term used under the feudal system, designates the days of work owed by the tenants to the monks of the Abbey.

2023 Rapet Pere & Fils Pernand Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses Rouge

Price: $117.00                           Your Price: $102.96            Quantity in Stock: 11

(92 Points) The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses is denser and more layered, offering up notes of plums, raspberries and candied peel, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and lively palate. The unassuming Vincent Rapet, whose family can trace its roots in Pernand back to 1795, is now joined by his son, Robin, at the helm of this historic 20-hectare domaine. There's a long track record here, and I can extol the merits of the domaine's older wines from personal experience. As I've written before, vinification is pretty classical, with the whites whole-cluster pressed and fermented in barrels (some 20% of which are new), including a considerable proportion of larger formats, as well as a few concrete eggs for some cuvées; Rapet believes them to give a more tensile, fresher profile to the wine. The reds, which have improved in recent years, see a brief cold soak, followed by some 15 days of maceration, maturing in around 30% new wood from carefully chosen sources, including Chassin and Taransaud. With the 2023 vintage, Rapet has made a subtle shift toward picking at more complete maturity, something that has brought more texture and plenitude to the domaine's white wines.(WK) Wine Advocate, Review Date: 01/2025

2023 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Greves

Price: $117.00                           Your Price: $102.96                         Quantity in Stock: 13

A great Burgundy red wine from the Beaune commune. The grape variety used is Pinot Noir. This more than 50 year old parcel, on a very steep slope, is gradually revealing it's potential to produce great wines.

Grèves de Bourgogne, as the Graves du Médoc, designates a scree slope of small stones, gravelly and sandy soil, particularly ideal for wine-growing.

Red wines vinification : We aim to obtain fruity wines rich in blended tannins, which is the mark of a well ripened grapes. We bring in the grapes in small crates for careful sorting in the winery; a conveyor belt is used for filling the tanks in order to respect the grapes. The fermentation lasts 15 days with pigeages, punching down of the cap, allowing the rich rich colour of the skins to be transmitted to the wine before pressing. Ageing takes place in barrels of which 20% are new. Racking by the means of a bellow eliminates the need for a pump. All these precautions limit handling of the grapes and the wine as much as possible, thus preserving all the richness.

This "climat"* is the most important in Beaune due to it's size and fame. The wines display an extreme finesse owing to both their aromas and their flavours. They are round and profound in mouth, combining elegance with tannic structures. They go perfectly with meat, marinated food and cheese. Serving temperature : 15°C.

* The term "climat" constitutes the Burgundy definition of "Terroir", in other words the specific geological and climatic conditions found on a defined plot of land.

2023 Domaine Rapet Chorey les Beaune Vieilles Vignes

Price: $58.50               Your Price: $51.48                    Quantity in Stock: 13

(89 points) "The 2023 Chorey-lès-Beaune 'Vieilles Vignes' from Vincent Rapet is raised in thirty percent new oak. The wine offers up a bright and complex bouquet of cherries, pomegranate, woodsmoke, gamebird, a lovely base of soil, a touch of whole clusters and just a dollop of new oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely transparent down to its soil, with a good core of red fruit, bouncy acids, fine-grained tannins and a long, nascently complex finish. This is a properly structured young red Burgundy and will need some cellaring time to start to stir. Good juice. 2031-2060. (May/Jun 2025)" John Gilman (View From the Cellar)

2023 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Savigny-les-Beaune Aux Fournaux

Price: $64.50               Your Price: $56.76                    Quantity in Stock: 13

A great Burgundy red wine from the Savigny-les-Beaune commune. The grape variety used is Pinot Noir. This parcel is more than 50 years old. The name "Aux Fournaux" refers to the coal kilns of which remains have been found.

Red wine vinification : We aim to obtain fruity wines, rich in blended tannins, which is the mark of well ripened grapes. We bring in the grapes in small crates for careful sorting in the winery; a conveyor belt is used for filling the tanks in order to respect the grapes. The fermentation lasts 15 days with pigeages, punching down of the cap, allowing the wine to soak up the richness and the colour from the grape-skins before pressing. Ageing takes place in barrels of which 30 % are new. Racking by the means of a bellow eliminates the need for a pump. All these precautions limit handling of the grapes and the wine as much as possible, thus preserving all the richness.

The importance of this commune resides in the size of it's surface and the number of renowned climats*. Our Savigny-les-Beaune comes from the "les Fournaux" climat*, characterized by a deep and ferruginous ground. The wines are coloured, elegant, quite powerful, marked by a dominant of Morello cherries, black currant, raspberry, then subsequently developing notes of undergrowth after some years. Savigny-les-Beaune is delicate with discreet tannins.

The premier cru comes from the upper part of this big parcel, the soil is poorer and less humid than the bottom part of the slope, classified village, the tannins are finer and they develop a longer presence in the mouth.

Served at 15°C, it suits red or white meat as well as game birds.

2023 Domaine Rapet Pere & Fils Les Cents Vignes, Beaune Premier Cru

Price: $102.00                           Your Price: $89.76                           Quantity in Stock: 13

A great Burgundy red wine from the Beaune commune. The grape variety used is Pinot Noir. This vine, planted 30 years ago, was purchased for the 2012 harvest.

Elaborating a great wine without vines is an impossible mission for a wine producer!! (In French the name "Sanvignes" sounds like "sans vignes" - without vines...) In fact the name comes from « EN SANVIGNES », small town close to the source of the Genêt, where Gallo-romanic ruins from the 4th century indicate the presence of ancient dwellings. The surrounding vines bore this name which was transformed into « CENTS VIGNES » - 100 vines.

This "climat"* on a gentle slope is characterized by a brown, very filtering limestone soil, mixed with clay and sand. The Pinot Noir expresses itself marvellously, blending the smoothness and roundness of the Beaunes with the force, richness and depth of the cellaring wines, the "vins de garde".

It is recommended with lamb, duck breast, red meat or a soft cheese. Serve at 15°C. It will keep for some ten years.

In Burgundy the word « climat » is used to describe a limited, precisely defined vine-« terroir » with specific geological and climatic conditions.

2023 DOMAINE RAPET CORTON GRAND CRU

Price: $195.00                           Your Price: $171.60                         Quantity in Stock: 13

(94 Points) This Corton bottling is made from a blend of fruit from the climats of les Chaumes and les Combes, with the vines fifty years of age in both parcels. The family also owns vines in les Pougets, which they bottle on its own. Interestingly, Vincent Rapet chooses to age this wine in only twenty percent new oak. The 2023 Corton delivers a deep and complex bouquet of red and black cherries, a touch of red currant, roasted venison, iron-infused soil tones, bonfire, fresh thyme and a nicely understated framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, young and beautifully defined by its underlying soil, with a fine core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins, good acids and fine focus and grip on the long, youthfully complex and very well balanced finish. This will be excellent in due course. (Drink between 2045-2100)  John Gilman, Review Date: 01/2025

2022 Vintage Wines

2022 Domaine Rapet bourgogne Rouge en Bully

Price: $48.00                             Your Price: $42.24

The Bourgogne rouge is grown at an altitude of 350 meters on the slope facing les Hautes-Côtes on the locality named La Grande Corvée de Bully. The soil here is marly with a shallow top-layer.  Bully was an ancient property, no longer existing, which at the time belonged to Abbaye de Maizières.  The nose is an enticing mix of ripe red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, complemented by subtle cinnamon and floral accents. As the wine opens up, hints of earthiness and rose petal add complexity to the bouquet. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, displaying a velvety texture and well-integrated tannins. Ample red fruit flavors, such as cherry and raspberry, are balanced by refreshing acidity, giving the wine a lively and approachable character. Delicate notes of smoke, earth, citrus, and minerality come together, leading to a long, sappy, and satisfying finish.

2022 Domaine Rapet Pernand Vergelesses Rouge Les Belles Filles

Price: $67.50                             Your Price: $59.40                           Quantity in Stock: 10

The Pernand-Vergelesses vineyard "Les Belles Filles" is a northern extension of "Iles des Vergelesses" and "En Carradeux" facing east and usually producing an elegant, very pretty light-bodied Burgundy. In 2022, the warmer weather gave this vineyard (and others in Auxey-Duresses for example) their moment in the sun with wines of balance and firm acidities but showing the ripeness of the vintage. The 2022 "Belle Filles" is quite beautiful, beginning with the usual floral raspberry aromas found in this wine; with aeration, the aromas deepen into earthy black cherry with hints of herbaceousness and graphite. The palate shows ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit with earth and mineral flavors, quite dense and deep but still light on its feet and balanced with firm acidity. This is a lovely vintage for "Belles Filles." Decant well in advance if drinking now, best to cellar five to eight years and drink till 2035.

2022 DOMAINE RAPET PERNAND VERGELESSES BLANC LES COMBOTTES

Price: $65.00               Your Price: $57.20                    Quantity in Stock: 2

2021 Domaine Rapet bourgogne Rouge en Bully

Price: $48.00               Your Price: $42.24                    Quantity in Stock: 5

2019 Vintage Wines

2019 Domaine Rapet Beaune Clos du Roi Premier Cru

Price: $78.00               Your Price: $68.64                    Quantity in Stock: 2

Great red wine of Burgundy, located in the commune of Beaune. The grape variety is Pinot Noir. The vines were replanted after the great frost of winter 1985.

Vinification in red: we are looking for fruity and rich wines with melted tannins as well ripe grapes know how to give. We bring the grapes in small boxes, in order to carry out a meticulous sorting at the winery, a carpet allows us to fill the vats respecting the grapes. The fermentation takes place for 15 days with punching down so that the richness and color of the skin are transmitted to the wine before pressing. Ageing takes place in barrels, 20% of which are in new barrels. Racking with a bellows eliminates the use of the pump. All these precautions make it possible to limit as much as possible the handling of grapes and wine in order to preserve all their richness.

Located north of the town of Beaune, this climate of low slope, is characterized by a stony, sandy and very filtering soil. Always very early and ripe, these beautiful grapes give us a wine of incomparable fruitines, accompanied by very sweet tannins. It is fine, tender and dense at the same time, with very expressive red fruit aromas. This climate is a former property of the Dukes of Burgundy, annexed by King Louis XI after the death of Charles the Bold.

2019 DOMAINE RAPET PERNAND VERGELESSES LES BELLES FILLES

Price: $49.00               Your Price: $43.12                    Quantity in Stock: 14

The Pernand-Vergelesses vineyard nestles in a green and peaceful valley between Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, at the foot of the Corton hill.

The name of the "climat" * "Bois Noël et Belles Filles" refers, poetically speaking, to a certain locality where the young women joyfully went for romantic dates.

It is the only area producing an equal amount of red and white wines, representing the whole palette of crus, warmly welcoming tourists and wine lovers, who will be enchanted by this wonderful place.

Ageing takes place in barrels of which 20 % are new. Racking by the means of a bellow eliminates the need for a pump. All these precautions limit handling of the grapes and the wine as much as possible, thus preserving all the richness.

Pernand - Vergelesses : This "climat"*, well-exposed facing east, is situated across from the village of Pernand.

The slope is quite steep and erosion is limited by limestone banks. The soil takes on a red colour due to the ferruginous clay present in the ground.

This is the birthplace of the supple and fruity red wines, gems of the Côte de Beaune.

Their aromas are fresh (black and red currant), round and fruity with a touch of mineral, so typical of our coteaux. The Pernand can be served after 3 years. The ideal serving temperature is around 15°C. It goes well with beef tenderloin, veal sauté, lamb shoulder "laquée, duck fricassée façon coq or with a selection of delicious cheeses.

2019 DOMAINE RAPET CORTON GRAND CRU

Price: $135.00                           Your Price: $118.80                         Quantity in Stock: 1

(94 Points) The 2019 Corton Grand Cru has also turned out very well, exhibiting aromas of red berries, spices, forest floor and orange oil. Full-bodied, layered and perfumed, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and lively acids, it's elegantly muscular in profile, concluding with a long, sapid finish. As I've written before, this comes from Les Meix and Les Chaumes, lieux-dits below Pougets and just above the village of Aloxe-Corton.    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2005 Vintage Wine

2005 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Corton Grand Cru

Price: $238.00                           Sale Price: $189.00                         Quantity in Stock: 1

(92 Points) There is a bit of wood spice here as well with riper and more deeply pitched black fruit and floral notes leading to rich, full, robust and well-muscled flavors that coat the mouth with very firm tannins that are not aggressive but it's clear that this will not be a precocious '05.   Review Date: 04/2007 Burghound
