2016 Vintage Bordeaux Wine Tasting _ A Study of 10 Year Old Bordeaux and all the 2016 Bordeaux in the store on SALE!!

"Plant no tree sooner than the vine."

Alcaeus, 580 BC

I say we keep this guy on the payroll!

The 2016 vintage from Bordeaux has been touted as one of the greatest in the last 100 years!  Well, I guess that makes one of the greatest vintages in the last 20 years seem a bit "ho hum", While many of the 2016's are years away from their peak drinking years, some are drinking very nicely at the moment and it is hard to find a bad bottle of 2016 Bordeaux.  So, I figured at 10 years of age it was time to start tasting these wines to see if the critics were right and these wines will need another two decades to start to drink at their peak.

This is scientific work we are doing here at Wine Watch and we also have a nice selection of 2016 vintage Bordeaux wine in the store now so if you can’t make the tasting you could host your own with everyday selections starting  in the $20 per bottle price range.

The fee for this tasting which includes dinner and gratuity is $350 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Château Belgrave 2016 Barrel Sample ...

2016 Chateau Belgrave Haut Medoc

Price: $57.00                             Your Price: $51.30

(90-92 Points) The 2016 Belgrave is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and was picked from 28 September until 20 October. It has a generous bouquet with small dark cherries, blueberry and crushed violet aromas, quite Margaux-like in style. There is certainly good intensity here. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening: blackberry, mint and cedar. From the start there is fine tension and there is very impressive structure towards the finish, plus a long saline aftertaste. (NM)  Wine Advocate, Review Date: 04/2017

2016 Chateau Chasse Spleen Moulis en Medoc

Price: $75.00                             Your Price: $67.50

(92-94 points) “The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score. (NM)” (4/2017)  Wine Advocate

2016 Chateau Coufran Haut Medoc

Price: $42.00                             Your Price: $37.80

Some black cherry fruit in fresh, sweet, pert style. The more air you give this, the better it works. Appetising aromas, just teased into place with a little fresh oak. Attractive, fresh, lively and graceful, and prettily styled. Delicious for the medium term, with a Hokusai cherry-blossom charm. (AJ)  Decanter, Review Date: 04/2019

2016 Chateau Lanessan Haut-Médoc

Price: $39.00               Your Price: $35.10

(91 Points) This is an ambitious take on 2016, pushing the vintage but successfully so, going for a cerebral 2010 feel rather than the generosity of 2009. Classic liquorice and slate, tight cassis fruits and an extremely well paced delivery of fresh tight tannins lead into a gorgeous, lifted juicy fruit finish. From a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. I like this a lot. (JA)  Decanter, Review Date: 04/2017

2016 Chateau Verdignan Haut Medoc

Price: $37.50               Your Price: $33.75

The Château Verdignan vineyards stretch over 60 hectares in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, a town neighbouring Saint-Estèphe in the Pauillac area. We have 40 hectares of lovely gravel-clay soils surrounding the château.

Our village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, in the Haut-Médoc appellation, benefits greatly from the influence of the Gironde Estuary.

The terroir at Verdignan is composed of the three grape varieties common to the appellation: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc.

The average age of the vines in the gravel soils is around 45 years.

A very large estate 70 hectares with mostly Cabernet Sauvignn 65%, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Mailihi family owns these two estates famous negiciant family in Bordeaux. This wine has a classic Bordeaux nose, 40 year old vines, red currant and cherry fruit on the nose with a good hand of fresh earth and cigar box spice. A very smooth and easy drinking wine this vintage is showing nicely with fine tannins and a host of that earth on the finish but still has a solid core of fruit, nice structure the sign of a great vintage in Bordeaux. Finish 40+ Very good +

Château d'Aiguilhe 2016 | Laguna Cellar ...

2016 Chateau D'Aiguilhe Cotes de Castillon

Price: $45.00               Your Price: $40.50

(92 Points) The 2016 Château d'Aiguilhe checks in as 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc brought up in 30% new barrels before being bottled with no fining. As with the white, it has brilliant limestone character as well as vibrant strawberry and black raspberry fruits, hints of violets and flowers, background oak, and medium to full-bodied richness. It’s a balanced, high-quality 2016 well worth seeking out. Drink it over the coming 15 years or so.  Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 02/2019

2016 Château Moya Cotes De Castillon

Price: $20.00               Your Price: $18.00

"Organic grapes and, although very sweet, much more relaxed than most of the wines from this stable. Drying end still but some lively expression first. Drink 2023-2032." Jancis Robinson : 16,5/20

"Very fine and bright with blackberry, blueberry and cherry character. Medium-bodied, integrated and fresh. Lovely balance." James Suckling : 90-91/100

Le Carillon de l'Angelus ...

2016 Le Carillon De L'Angelus St Emilion

Price: $198.00                           Your Price: $178.20

(94 points) “The level of precision in the cellar at Angélus is always impressive, but they have taken it to new levels in recent years. Parts of the harvest undergo cold soak, plots are vinified at different temperatures, and undergo different lengths of post-fermentation maceration depending on tannic or fruit potential. The cellar is kept cooler than normal to preserve aromatics. This wine is delicious, with a hugely aromatic freshness in the mouth, showing griotte cherries, gourmet spice and floral notes of violets and white flowers. This is 70% new oak, a little more than usual, but a mark of the vintage is this ability to take new oak very well. Blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. (JA)” (4/2017) Decanter

2016 Chateau Belair-Monange St. Emilion

Price: $250.00                           Your Price: $225.00

(97  Points) A blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Belair Monange comes strutting out of the glass like a total rock star with gregarious red cherries, blackberries and warm plums scents plus hints of lavender, rose hip tea, powdered cinnamon, cigar box and camphor. Medium-bodied, it completely fills the palate with vibrant red and black fruit layers, framed by a firm backbone of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and perfumed. (LPB) 97+  Wine Advocate, Review Date: 11/2018

2016 Chateau Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion, France

Price: $1398.00                        Your Price: $1258.20

(100 Points) The 2016 Cheval Blanc is blended of 59.5% Merlot, 37.2% Cabernet Franc and 3.3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is incredibly youthful yet not so shy as some other 2016s at this stage, giving wonderfully intense scents of red currants, black cherries, wild blueberries and violets with nuances of star anise, cinnamon stick, rose hip tea, cigar box and wood smoke plus a touch of beef drippings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has jaw-dropping elegance and depth, offering up layer upon layer of fragrant red and black fruits plus an extraordinary array of mineral sparks, supported by a rock-solid grainy texture, finishing with epic persistence and an edifying perfume. This is a very different style from the rich, opulently hedonic 2015, yet this wonderfully fragrant, beautifully poised and intellectually compelling 2016 is equally extraordinary. (LPB)  Wine Advocate, Review Date: 11/2018

2016 Chateau Fombrauge Saint Emilion

Price: $66.00               Your Price: $59.40

(92 Points) Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Fombrauge sings of lively kirsch, baked black cherries and warm plums notes plus touches of potpourri, cigar box and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with decadent red and black fruit preserves, structured by velvety tannins and finishing with fantastic length.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Chateau Grand Mayne Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Price: $119.00                           Your Price: $107.10

(94 Points) Concentrated autumnal fruit offers a hawthorny bramble of blackberry and bilberry. Big-framed, muscular tannins are joined by plenty of acidity - it's very clearly built to last and confident in its ability to reward those with patience. Matured in 50% new oak. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consult.  Decanter

2016 Chateau La Dominique St. Emilion

Price: $90.00               Your Price: $81.00

(94 Points) Restrained and elegant on the attack, this has plenty of dense, dark black fruit to back it up. The palate opens to show complexity and intensity of fruit, and totally delivers on its opulent and silky billing, with lovely touches of spice to pick up the finish. Well constructed. It is planted to 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 70% new oak with Michel Rolland as consultant. 49hl/ha yield, 3.75pH. (JA)  Decanter, Review Date: 04/2017

2016 Chateau Simard Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Price: $42.00               Sale Price: $36.96                    Quantity in Stock: 51

"This juicy, soft wine with lots of acidity and bright black-currant flavors is made for early drinking. Soft tannins are cushioned by fruitiness. " Wine Enthusiast

2016 Chateau Troplong Mondot St Emilion

Price: $255.00                           Your Price: $229.50

(97 Points) Coming from one of the coolest terroirs in Saint-Emilion, the 2016 Château Troplong Mondot is a blend of 89% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc brought up in 77% new French oak. This deep purple-hued effort offers a smorgasbord of powerful blue and black fruits, smoked earth, truffle, chocolate, and licorice. Full-bodied, deep, and opulent on the palate, it’s a truly great wine as well as one of the superstars in 2016. It should drink well for upwards of three decades.  Jeb Dunnuck

2016 Domaine De Chevalier Rouge Pessac Leognan

Price: $150.00             Your Price: $135.00

(97 Points) As to the reds, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that saw an extended maceration, malo in barrel, and 18 months in just 35% new French oak. This deep purple-hued beauty boasts a powerful bouquet of tobacco smoke, damp earth, gravelly, rocky minerality, wood smoke, and loads of dark fruits. Full-bodied, deep, concentrated yet incredibly elegant and seamless on the palate, it’s a legendary Chevalier in the making. While I rated this as high as 99 points on one of the four separate occasions I was able to taste it, I’m being conservative with the score.  Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 02/2019

2016 Chateau Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan

Price: $267.00                           Your Price: $240.30

(98 Points) The 2016 Haut-Bailly is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. The nose opens with beautiful floral notes of violets and lavender accented with earthy notions and sparks of crushed rocks over a core of kirsch, cassis and wild blueberries. Full-bodied, rich and seductive, it has layer upon layer of red, black and blue fruits intermingled with earth and mineral hints leading to a very long, perfumed finish. -Wine Advocate

2022 Baron de Brane Cantenac Margaux image

2016 Baron De Brane Margaux

Price: $52.50               Your Price: $47.25

(89-91 Points) The 2016 Baron de Brane is a blend of 65% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a very pure and charming bouquet with brambly red fruit, cedar and pencil shavings, very assured for a Deuxième Vin. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin on the entry, the fruit a little darker than the nose suggests, segueing into a well-defined second half with brown spices and hints of leather. This is an intriguing Baron de Brane. (NM)  Wine Advocate, Review Date: 04/2017

2016 CHATEAU D'ISSAN MARGAUX

2016 Chateau Marquis d'Alesme Margaux

Price: $81.00                             Your Price: $72.90

(96 Points) Talk about a gem in the vintage, I was blown away by the 2016 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker on each of the three times I was able to taste it. This estate has been on an undeniable roll since the arrival of Marjolaine de Conicnck in 2009, and the 2016 is unquestionably the best yet. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by an essence of Cabernet bouquet that includes loads of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, crushed rocks, sandalwood, and violets. Almost Saint Julien in style, this beauty is laser-focused on the palate, medium to full-bodied, brilliantly textured, and has a blockbuster finish. It deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 25-30 years. Bravo!  Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 02/2019

2016 Chateau Langoa Barton Saint-Julien

Price: $97.50               Your Price: $87.75

(95 Points) Sappy and dense, with kirsch, plum reduction, mulled açai berry and warmed fig fruit showing impressive range, while licorice snap, ganache and roasted apple wood notes jostle behind them. Mouthwatering acidity should give this plenty of time to round into form. Best from 2025 through 2040.  Wine Spectator

2016 Chateau Lagrange St Julien

Price: $135.00                           Your Price: $121.50

(95 Points) Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Lagrange sashays out of the glass with notions of candied violets, cassis, underbrush and warm black plums with waves of Black Forest cake, cedar chest and yeast extract scents. Medium to full-bodied, the bags of perfumed black fruits are solidly structured with super ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and layered. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Chateau Leoville Poyferre Saint-Julien

Price: $189.00                           Your Price: $170.10

(98 Points) Tasted on four separate occasions where this wine rated 97+, 98, 98, and 99, the 2016 Château Léoville-Poyferré is a brilliant bottle of wine and is certainly in the same league as the 2000, 2003, 2009, and 2010. Made from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak, this brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine offers a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco leaf, and ample crushed rocks. It’s certainly one of the most flamboyant and opulent wines in the vintage, yet it remains perfectly balanced, with masses of polished tannins, no hard edges, and a fabulous finish. It will be drinkable in 3-4 years yet keep for 3-4 decades.  Jeb Dunnuck

2016 Saint-Pierre Esprit de Saint-Pierre St-Julien

2016 Chateau Talbot St. Julien image

2016 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

Price: $157.50                           Your Price: $141.75

(95 Points) Rock 'em, sock 'em St.-Julien, with mouthcoating ganache and tar notes backed by commensurate cassis, blueberry paste and blackberry reduction flavors. The long finish rumbles through, with buried brambly grip providing the support for the dense fruit and toast to meld. Best from 2025 through 2040.  Wine Spectator

2016 Chateau Talbot Connetable Talbot St Julien

Price: $63.00               Your Price: $56.70

This is one of the best second wines of the Médoc. Connétable saw the light of day in the sixties. It has benefited over the years from all the care given to the vineyard and increasingly severe selections. Like its predecessor Chateau Talbot, this is a classic, elegant wine with a clear, well-designed structure and a long, fresh finish.

2016 Chateau D' Armailhac Pauillac - click image for full description

2016 Chateau D' Armailhac Pauillac

Price: $112.50                           Your Price: $101.25

(94 Points) A thrilling bottle of wine that readers should snatch up is the 2016 Château d’Armailhac. This deeply colored, medium to full-bodied, powerful Armailhac gives up a lovely perfume of blackberry and plums fruits, violets, graphite, cedar pencil, and earthy, herbal nuances. Classic, ripe, layered, and just a beautiful Pauillac any way you look at it, it has plenty of upfront sex appeal but is going to keep for 20-25 years as well. Bravo! The 2016 is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.  Jeb Dunnuck

2016 Chateau Latour Pauillac

Price: $1005.00                        Your Price: $854.25                         Quantity in Stock: 10

(100 Points) A monumental wine from Latour. This isn't yet ready to drink but offers an impactful and promising palate full of muscle, tension and length. A complex nose filled with pencil lead, crayon, cola, mint, dried herbs, violets, and tobacco, layered with cocoa powder and espresso nuances. On the palate, it is both generous and controlled, suave and slick, with an effortless texture that fills the mouth with bright red fruits and cool, stony elements. The wine expands beautifully, with a powdery, fleshy grip leading to a long, mineral-driven finish marked by wet stones, graphite, and cola. Still compact and somewhat caged, the tannins remain firm and structured, almost austere in their tension. It carries a sense of power and poise, but still with supreme charm. (GH)  Decanter, Review Date: 02/2025

2016 Chateau Lynch-Bages Pauillac

Price: $300.00                           Your Price: $270.00

Medium to full-bodied, rich and fantastically concentrated, the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins with tons of pepper, cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly, a legendary Lynch Bages! (LPB) Wine Advocate, Review Date: 11/2018

Price: $45.00               Your Price: $40.50

(90 Points) This is an excellent Goulée with the cooling edge of a beautiful fresh Médoc coupled with generosity. Easily one of the best Goulées that I have tasted. Flint and smoke aromatics on the nose are followed by welcoming red fruits through the body of the wine. 77% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, picked over a long harvest period from 28th September to 15th October. This is the first year the new plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon have been included in the blend. 3.65pH. Drinking Window 2023 - 2035.  Decanter

(92 Points) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2016 Les Pagodes de Cos is blended of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46.5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc. It has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with notions of warm cassis, black cherries and smoked meats giving way to scents of charcoal, underbrush and cloves plus a waft of new leather. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous black fruits and some compelling red fruit sparks, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and finishing long and spicy.

2016 Chateau Montrose St Estephe

Price: $423.00             Your Price: $380.70                 Quantity in Stock: 2

(100 Points) Unquestionably one of the top 2-3 wines of the vintage, the 2016 Château Montrose is a monument in the making. Checking in as a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc raised in 60% new French oak (the balance was in once-used barrels) and representing a tiny 36% of the production, this deep purple-colored 2016 possesses powerful, incredibly classic Saint-Estephe notes of creme de cassis, graphite, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and burning embers. With a powerful, full-bodied style on the palate, a huge mid-palate, lots of underlying structure and tannic grip, and perfect balance, this magical wine will need upwards of a decade or cellaring and keep for 40-50 years. Jeb Dunnuck

2016 Chateau Ormes De Pez St. Estephe

Price: $72.00                             Your Price: $64.80                           Quantity in Stock: 3

(94 Points) Another bargain alert! At this price level, perhaps the most subtle and elegant of all wines tasted. Not as expressive as Ormes de Pez, but top marks for delicate refinement and indeed a noticeably floral aromatic profile that accentuates the palate. As wine consultant Kevin Gagnon noted at a tasting: ‘Finesse and great length.’ Do not hesitate. (PK) Decanter, Review Date: 03/2019

2016 Pagodes de Cos d'Estournel St. Estephe

The joy and spontaneity of moments shared with loved ones. An impromptu lunch with friends is the perfect occasion to open a bottle of Pagodes de Cos. Pagodes de Cos is at once indulgent, comforting and vivacious, like a carefree conversation with family or friends in a familiar place.
