1989 VS 1990 California Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Tasting Saturday October 18th 7:30pm Our study of 1989 and 1990 Vintages Continues....

Alcohol, the cause and the solution to all of life’s problems.

I love to see articles about Alcohol that portray us daily wine drinkers in a bad light. I’ve been drinking two bottles of wine a day for 27 years now and have not missed a day’s work?  I was fully immunized over the last few years pandemic and still to this day have not contracted the Corona virus, I can only attribute my good health to the wine.   Crazy you do not see as many articles on junk food and high fructose corn syrup beverages?   I guess all the advertising dollars make it hard for the media to say bad things about fast food and Junk food when the companies that make all this junk are paying the bills.

We have a nice collection of older vintage California wine in the store right now and when we hit a subject we hit it hard as I like to say we are doing scientific research with wine here at Wine Watch.  So, I figured a great follow-up study to our 1989 vs 1990 Bordeaux study would be a tasting featuring California wines from 1989 and 1990.

The 1980’s was the decade where California wines really came to get international attention after Baron Philippe de Rothschild entered into a joint venture with Robert Mondavi Winery you could see the writing was on the wall, the French see the potential of California and many other would follow the Baron to the promise land.

In the 1990’s the California wine industry comes into full stride and even the so called “Off Vintages” lie 1993, 1998 and 1999 that were not as well received as all the others, the top wines from these three vintages are still drinking beautifully today.  I would consider the best of the 1990’s vintages wines are drinking at their peak right now for my taste.

But that is why we host so many tastings with older wines, just to be sure.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $350 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

Price: $395.00                           Sale Price: $325.00                         Quantity in Stock: 3

Founded in 1968, Diamond Creek is California's first exclusively Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyard. Red Rock Terrace, a warm microclimate, is 7 acres of north facing vineyard. The red tinted soil is high in iron content and the wine from Red Rock Terrace is the most accessible and earliest drinkable of all their wines. Their winemaker describes Red Rock Terrace as having "velvety tannins, a rich and well balanced body, a medium dark ruby color with cherry, mint and black currant flavors."

1989 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA

Price: $395.00                           Sale Price: $325.00                         Quantity in Stock: 3

This bottling comes from the eight-acre Volcanic Hill vineyard, which has ashy volcanic soils deposited by the eruption of Mt. Konocti eight million years ago. The wines from this site are Diamond Creek's longest lived, "loaded with intense ripe berry fruit, cassis, violets and a smoky richness," according to the winery.

1989 Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA

Price: $395.00                           Sale Price: $325.00                         Quantity in Stock: 2

Earthy and complex--typical of this vineyard--with layers of clay, spice, berry and cherry; long and lingering on the finish. Needs time.  Wine Spectator, Review Date: 06/1998

1989 Far Niente Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, USA

Price: $250.00                           Sale Price: $200.00                         Quantity in Stock: 12

Winery Notes: Oakville is the heart of exceptional Napa Valley Cabernet, and it happens to be our home. It is the source and inspiration for our Cabernet wines and a large part of why these wines have achieved their lofty status. Oakville is where our Martin Stelling Vineyard was planted in the 1970s, right behind our winery. We grow, nurture, and produce our flagship Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon in Oakville which is a highly allocated and much-treasured wine. It represents a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec grapes grown in vineyards that have been cultivated for over 40 years. Its velvety texture and mouthwatering plum and blackberry flavors provide a luxurious wine-drinking experience like no other. This is truly our finest expression of Cabernet and wine craftsmanship at its highest art form.

1989 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Napa

Price: $395.00                           Your Price: $347.60                         Quantity in Stock: 2

(90 points) Robert Parker: "This has turned out to be one of the finest wines from this austere, tough-textured vintage. Although it exhibits some hard tannin in the finish, it is not excessive. This is a youthful, subdued, impressively-endowed wine with a multi-layered, cassis fruitiness, good spice, excellent purity (a characteristic of all the Shafer Hillside Select Cabernets), and fine balance and length. While it will remain a narrowly-constructed wine, it is not light or insubstantial. This is an authoritatively-flavored, rich, structured California Cabernet Sauvignon that should hit its peak by the end of the century and last for another 20 years. A sleeper!" (06/95)

Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet ...

1990 BERINGER VINEYARDS PRIVATE RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY

Price: $225.00                           Sale Price: $180.00                         Quantity in Stock: 4

(93 Points) The generously endowed, dark purple-colored 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a rich, opulent, full-bodied wine loaded with layers of flavor, copious amounts of juicy fruit, sweet tannin, and moderate amounts of lavish oak. Less muscular and concentrated than the 1991, it is a superb expression of a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Beringer continues to make a strong case for being California's most popular and hottest winery.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
