HAPPY Hour Burgundy Wine Tasting With Special Guest William Davis, Director of Education at Wilson Daniels Friday, September 26th
“Most bad," the host concluded. "If you ask me, something sinister lurks in men who avoid wine, games, the company of lovely women, and dinnertime conversation. Such people are either gravely ill or secretly detest everyone around them.”
― Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita
I have always said I don't trust people that don't drink wine....
And when I heard that the William Davis, the Director of Education at Wilson Daniels was in town next week and that he wanted to host a Burgundy tasting at the wine bar, even though we already have an event on the calendar we have two spaces here to conduct events at the Wine Watch. So, you are not seeing double we have two events scheduled for Friday, September 26th. We just added this Happy Hour wine tasting featuring some of the top names in Burgundy from Wilson Daniels hosted by Master of Wine William Davis and we will be hosting our vintage Aussie tasting in the wine cave which of course that will be hosted by yours truly.
Wilson Daniles boasts some of the biggest names in Burgundy and although the Domaine de la Romanee Conti wines will not be on the table tonight we are featuring a few older vintages in our vintage Burgundy tasting coming up on Saturday October 25th. Tonight, we have wines from Domaine Laroche, Domaine du Roc des Boutires, Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Faiveley and more. I have included on this offering the newest releases from all these great domaines. We have a few older vintage wines as well but these wines do not stay on the shelf long as Burgundy is still a very hot topic in the world of fine wines and the production is much smaller so in some cases we only get a few bottles of these wines each year.
The fee for this tasting is $95 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.
HAPPY Hour Burgundy Wine Tasting
With Special Guest William Davis, Director of Education at Wilson Daniels
Friday, September 26th
6pm
2023 Domaine Laroche Chablis 1er Cru Vaudevay
Price: $70.50 Your Price: $62.04
A historical player in Chablis, the Domaine Laroche has embodied Burgundian viticultural excellence since the 9th century. This emblematic estate, now owned by the Advini group, stands out for its meticulous know-how and cuvées that accurately translate the complexity of the local climates. Elegance, purity, and aromatic finesse are the watchwords of this renowned house.
This Premier Cru originates from typical Kimmeridgian soils, rich in clay-limestone marls and marine fossils, notably the famous Exogyra virgula. This terroir, characterized by a marked slope and a cool microclimate, nestled in the heart of a forest environment, promotes the production of tense wines, with a pronounced mineral profile. The aromas evoke flint, the signature of a great Chablis.
2022 Domaine du Roc des Boutires Pouilly Fuisse “En Bertillone”
Price: $81.75 Your Price: $71.94
Domaine du Roc des Boutires has 11 acres (4.2 hectares) on an east-west oriented strip at the same latitude of the village of Pouilly on Jurassic limestone interlaced with clay and shale, the same substratum as the Premier and Grands Crus of the Côte d’Or. The vines of Chardonnay, mostly planted in the beginning of the ‘70s, are flowering here with the greatest respect for the natural environment.
All wines come from the estate vineyard exclusively. Exclusively coming from the terroir ‘En Bertilionne’ the highest terroir of Pouilly-Solutré village sitting at 350m elevation with deep chalky limestones marls.
The palate is vibrant, with a hint of bitterness and biting acidity. The balance is harmonious and highly nuanced, with notes of peach and honeysuckle.
2023 Domaine Leflaive Macon Verze
Price: $82.50 Your Price: $72.60
This was the wine that started it all back in 2004 when the domaine, then under Anne-Claude Leflaive, purchased this small 14.65-hectare plot that was subsequently to spawn the single vineyard wines below. We named it then, and still consider it now, one of the least expensive fine wines in the world, as well as being one of the most expensive Mâcons. Taut, reductive, “struck match” nose, sweetly rich, piercingly bright and zesty. The palate is juicy, with succulent fruit, delectable freshness and subtle tension to the finish.
The Mâcon-Verzé is a wine of great purity, both floral and mineral, expressing a lively energy, ready to be enjoyed earlier than the wines of Puligny-Montrachet.
2021 Chateau du Moulin-a-Vent 'Moulin-a-Vent'
Price: $50.25 Your Price: $44.22
(93 Points) This is a beautifully aged Moulin-à-Vent that shines even in a cooler vintage. A smattering of ripe red fruit wafts from your glass along with black plum, dried cranberry and red raspberry. Firm tannins lead on the attack and dissolve into well-integrated, chalk-dusted red and black fruit. - Wine Enthusiast
2022 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey Rouge Vieilles Vignes
Price: $50.75 Your Price: $44.66
Winery Notes- Our "vieilles vignes" (old vines) are over thirty years old and produce an exceptionally aromatic wine that offers a true reflection of its Mercurey terroirs. The palate reveals a smooth, fruity attack and evolves towards notes of ripe red berries and a touch of vanilla. An intensely aromatic wine with a delicate structure and silky smooth tannins that will win over wine experts and amateurs alike
2022 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Les Montroziers'
Price: $102.75 Your Price: $90.42
(91 Points) Faiveley's communal-level bottling, a blend of Agrillats and Lavières, has been rechristened as the 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Montroziers, in honor of Maurice Colrat de Montrozier, French statesman and great uncle of Guy and Yvonnes Faiveley. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet raspberries, plums and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and perfumed, with a lively core of fruit underpinned by succulent acids. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
2021 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Les Montroziers'
Price: $97.50 Your Price: $85.80
Intense garnet red hue and aromas of fruit, oak, and spice on the nose. The palate reveals a smooth, rich attack, velvety tannins, and good balance. A delicate, seductive, and very elegant wine.

The newest releases from these great Domaines
Located in the southernmost tip of the Burgundy region, Moulin-à-Vent was one of the first appellations established in 1924 and later awarded AOC status in 1936. Château du Moulin-à-Vent, named for the 300-year-old stone windmill atop the hill of Les Thorins, dates back to 1732, when it was called Château des Thorins. Today, the estate encompasses 37 hectares (91.4 acres) of the appellation’s finest climats, planted to Gamay Noir averaging 40 years in age. Since 2009, under the new ownership of the Parinet family, investment in the winemaking facilities and the vineyards has resulted in plot-specific signature wines expressing the individual characteristics of each exceptional terroir.

The roots of the Leflaive family go back to 1717 when Claude Leflaive took up residence in Puligny-Montrachet, intent upon cultivating several acres of vineyards. The domaine, in its present form, was created by Joseph Leflaive between the years of 1910-1930, as a result of his successive purchases of vineyards and houses. In 2015 Brice de La Morandiere, great grandson of the founder, succeeded Anne-Claude Leflaive, pioneer in biodynamics, as the 4th generation at the head of the Domaine.
