The Rhone valley is home to some of the worlds best Syrah and Grenache - old vines, with savoury power and rich fruit. The wines however can often be astronomically expensive. Thank heavens then for the great value appellation of Cotes-du-Rhone, which covers both the northern and southern Rhone Valley. Here you'll often find a mixture of the two aforementioned grapes, plus maybe a couple of others! The Pas de Roches is based on some seriously old vines of Grenache, intermixed with Syrah and Mourvedre. The nose is a wash of sweet red berries intermixed with cinnnamon quill and hedgerow. Then a soft, almost pinotesque palate is given heft and drive by the spice and the tannin, and the wine really accelerates at the back, with real power.
