Pomerol is one of the smallest of the great appellations in Bordeaux. Merlot is the predominant grape varietal grown here and the wines from this appellation often contain 80% or more of this varietal. Because of Merlot’s soft, elegant nature and the California wine industry’s commercialization of Merlot, there are many wine consumers in the U.S. that consider Merlot to be light and inoffensive at its best. Pomerol produces wines from Merlot that transcend this stereotype and are some of the longest lived wines made from this varietal from anywhere in the world. The main reason why Merlot has flourished here is that frosts arrive earlier in this region than in the Medoc and Merlot ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and is much more likely to produce a mature crop in this region.
