The 2023 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Canet" is a highly-regarded white Burgundy wine from France

Key characteristics and tasting notes:

  • Aromas: Hints of reduction on the nose, intense bouquet with notes of melted candle wax and lanolin. Ripe citrus and subtle toasted notes are also present.

  • Flavor profile: Well-balanced and poised palate with bright acidity. Offers a fine thread of acidity and minerality, culminating in a complex, assertive finish.

  • Body and Texture: Powerful, oily texture with acids that build up on the palate.

  • Vintage notes: The 2023 vintage was characterized by a cool spring and moderate summer, allowing for slow, even ripening, which enhances the site's natural finesse.

  • Critical reception: Received high praise from various critics, with scores ranging from 93-96 points. Described as "compelling," "superb," and having "tremendous purity".

Vineyard Information:

  • Location: Situated in the northern part of Puligny-Montrachet, bordering Meursault. Located mid-slope, above Combettes and next door to Meursault Perrières.

  • Soil: Features a well-balanced mix of clay and limestone soils. Very rocky soil.

  • Sunlight Exposure: Good exposure to morning sunlight due to its elevated position, which aids ripening and drainage.

  • Vine Age: Vines average around 50 years old. Some vines were planted as early as 1936.

Winemaking:

  • Sustainable practices: Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot, who also farms Champ Canet, practices sustainable farming.

  • Winemaking approach: Gentle vinification techniques are employed, including indigenous yeast fermentation in French oak barrels (25-30% new) and aging on fine lees with minimal bâtonnage to preserve freshness.

Drinking Window: Recommended to drink from 2029-2035.

Potential Food Pairings: Pairs beautifully with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, or truffled chicken. Also complements chicken and turkey dishes.

In summary, the 2023 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Canet" is a highly-rated, complex white Burgundy with a long aging potential. Its unique characteristics are a result of the exceptional Champ Canet vineyard site and careful winemaking.
