2008 Checkerboard Cabernet Sauvignon

(91-93 points) The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon also performed better this year than last. It offers a deep ruby/purple color along with notes of chocolate, black currants, smoke and scorched earth. Deep, elegant and medium to full-bodied, the 2008 is not quite as flamboyant and textured as the 2007, but it is beautifully made, pure and impressive. It should drink well for 12+ years. This small, 12-acre, boutique operation on the south side of Diamond Mountain debuted in 2006 (awarded 91 points in last year’s report). "The 2008 vintage is recognized for its lower than average precipitation in winter and throughout the early months of Spring. The result was a quick bloom and very even set. The rest of the growing season yielded moderate temperatures, peppered with only a few scattered heat spikes. The pleasantly cool weather continued through the months of August and September and provided ideal conditions for complete physiological development and maturation of the tannins. The actual harvest was a bit earlier and shorter than usual, which can be attributed to the perfect circumstances in which the grapes were given to ripen. The wines of 2008 can be characterized for their expression of luscious fruit, optimal ripeness and elegant finesse. At this time, the 2008 Checkerboard is already extremely enjoyable and allowing us much excitement in being able follow its evolution as it continues to age in the bottle.”
