I like to drink wine more than I used to...
Don Corleone, The Godfather
The wines that I like to drink seem to all start with a "B", Barolo, Barbaresco, Burgundy, Bordeaux and of course Brunello.
Brunello di Montalcino is the wine with top billing in Tuscany is for the last half of century, a DOCG from a fortress town south of Siena with reds of legendary power and longevity that have commanded lofty prices. The wines of this world-renowned region of Tuscany were conceived by the Biondi Santi family a century ago, today Brunello di Montalcino is produced under scores of labels, representing small farms, established estates and even international corporations. By the turn of the 21st century, there are over 250 producers of Brunello di Montalcino, mostly small farmers and family estates, producing nearly 330,000 cases a year.
We have a great collection of Brunello di Montalcino in the store and we always host a tasting to showcase the newest release from this fortress town and this year the highly anticipated 2020 vintage has just been released and we have such an incredible selection of the 2019 vintage wines in the store that the consorzio of Brunello producers awarded the Wine Watch the Leccio D’Oro in November of 2024 at Benvenuto Brunello!
Every year the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino awards a prize called LECCIO D’ORO.
The prize is divided into two sections:
Restaurants (Italian and overseas) and
Wine Shops (Italian and overseas).
The prizes are awarded to the places that have a Wine List with a wide well represented range of Brunello di Montalcino and the other Montalcino wines covering both the various vintages and numerous labels from many different estates.
Past winners of this award include: EATALY, New York, VINO ITALIANO, Boston, PRAELUM, Singapore, HEDONISM WINES, London and ENOTECA “K&L WINE MERCHANTS”, Los Angeles just to name a few of the world’s top wine establishments that Wine Watch has now joined receiving this prestigious award in 2024!
Each year before we show our “Wine Drinking People” the current release of Brunello di Montaclino we always host an event to showcase just how well these wines age, so you can taste the 2020 vintage on Thursday September 11th and then you have a chance to taste wines that are drinking in their peak years on the next evening while the taste of the new releases are fresh on your palate.
We are doing serious scientific work with Brunello and if you love Sangiovese these are the top examples but you have to be optimistic if you are buying the young wines from Montalcino as they need another 8-10 years in the cellar after they are released!
All the wines at this tasting will be 10+ years old and even though Brunello is held back for 5 years by law the greatest vintages need another 10+ years in the cellar to reach their peak years of drinkability so these wines should all be at their peak years of drinking!
Join us as we experience some of the best vintage Brunello di Montalcino that we have in the store back to the 1990 vintage along with a special dinner by Chef Toni. The fee for this event which includes dinner is $275 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com. Please let us know when you make your reservations if you have any dietary restrictions or aversions and chefs Toni and Dani will be happy to accommodate you.
