2002 Burgundy Tasting at Wine Watch

And Burgundy is one of the wines that really makes me happy so if you didn’t notice this event on the calendar that’s because it was just added over the last few weeks.  We have an incredible collection of 2002 vintage wines from Burgundy in the store right now so I figured it’s time to open up a few bottles to see how this excellent vintage is drinking at age 14.

There are only so many great vintages of Burgundy to go around and most recently you have 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002 and 1999 in terms of being outstanding for both the red and the white wines.  You can argue which vintage is best overall but these five are all contenders across the board for both red and White Burgundy.

The top wines from this vintage may still be years away from their peak but that is why we do these events.  The whites are all premier cru and we have a few grand cru wines in the red category with three top level domains on the table this is an event that Burgundy lovers will not want to miss.

(93 points) Knockout vibrant nose combines peach, tangerine, lime, hazelnut and spices. Supersweet and fat, with sappy fruit flavor perfectly framed by new oak and lifted by limey acidity. (93 points)  I have been arguing for some years now that Caillerets is the single best vineyard in Puligny and it's interesting that we're finally beginning to see enough different examples to create a greater awareness of just how fine the vineyard can be (it was essentially a monopole) until the early 1990s. Noticeable pain grillé undertones highlight expressive, wonderfully pure middle weight flavors that display nuances of fennel, citrus and a subtle ripe pear character and a sappy, palate staining finish of grand cru caliber persistence. A terrific wine that has it all, blending size, power, weight and elegance into a seamless whole. Henri Boillot told me that 2002 is "a great millésime with exceptionally good maturity if one was willing to wait. I told my growers that I would not accept fruit that was harvested at the ban de vendange (officially declared harvest date). As such, everything came in with sugar levels between 13.5 and 14% but, and this is the wonderful thing about 2002, we still had excellent acidity. In other words, the wines are very ripe but they have backbone and plenty of dry extract, which gives them a subtle chewy character. I demanded that my growers prune severely and it shows as yields were on average between 40 and 42 hl/ha and that includes the Bourgogne. For me, the vintage is a blend of 1992 and 1996, with the accessibility of the former but the structure and potential longevity of the latter." And Boillot is justifiably proud of his wines... Domaine Michel Noëllat & Fils is located just a few miles away from the Mairie of Vosne-Romanée in Rue de la Fontaine, their closest neighbor is Domaine Leroy.   The Domaine is only 27 hectares and they do a little negociant wine for export also.  They have wines all the way from Marsannay to Pommard, they total 23 different appellations in all and only two are white wines.
